Eagles exercise fifth-year options on Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith

The Philadelphia Eagles locked up a pair of defensive starters through the 2027 season, picking up the fifth-year options of defensive tackle Jalen Carter and outside linebacker Nolan Smith on Monday.

The team faced a Friday deadline on the options for the two Georgia products.

Carter, 25, was the ninth overall pick in the 2024 draft. A Pro Bowl honoree each of the past two years, Carter is in line to make $27 million in 2027.

Smith, 25, was also selected in the first round two years ago, No. 30 overall. He is in line to receive around $13.7 million in 2027.

Both players were key performers in the Eagles’ run to the 2024-25 Super Bowl championship, as Smith had four sacks in the playoff run and Carter recorded two.

Carter has 108 tackles, 13.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 13 passes defensed in 43 NFL games (27 starts). Last season, he logged 33 tackles, three sacks and a career-best seven passes defensed in 11 games, all starts, despite being slowed by shoulder injuries.

A triceps ailment limited Smith to 12 games, all starts, last year, and he had 31 tackles, three sacks and one fumble recovery. In 45 NFL games (22 starts), he has 91 tackles, 10.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two passes defensed.

Eagles’ Jalen Carter, Lane Johnson, Commanders’ Laremy Tunsil out for Saturday

The Philadelphia Eagles ruled out defensive tackle Jalen Carter (shoulders) and offensive tackle Lane Johnson (foot) on Thursday for Saturday’s road game against the Washington Commanders after they did not practice all week.

The Commanders ruled out five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil because of a strained oblique.

Carter, 24, has 32 tackles, two sacks and 11 quarterback hits in 10 games (all starts) in his third season with Philadelphia, which selected him ninth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Johnson, 35, has not played since the 16-9 home win over the Detroit Lions on Nov. 16. He has started all 10 of the games he has played. The six-time Pro Bowl selection was first-team All-Pro in 2017 and 2022. The Eagles picked him fourth overall in the 2013 draft.

Philadelphia star running back Saquon Barkley (stinger) was a full participant for a second consecutive day on Thursday. He was categorized as a non-participant on Tuesday, which was an estimation because the Eagles only held a walkthrough.

Philadelphia listed in Thursday’s injury report that tight end Cameron Latu (stinger) and offensive tackle Cameron Williams (shoulder) were full participants but questionable for the game. The Eagles opened the practice window for Williams, who is on injured reserve, on Dec. 11.

Washington already has ruled out quarterback Jayden Daniels (left elbow) for the rest of the season. Daniels won’t go on IR and practiced in limited fashion all week.

Tunsil, who was limited on Wednesday, did not practice on Thursday and was ruled out, as were defensive tackle Eddie Goldman (concussion) and tight end Colson Yankoff (ankle).

“(Tunsil) tried to go at practice yesterday, and he’s just not there yet,” Commanders coach Dan Quinn said on Thursday. “We’ll hopefully get him back for the final game, but not for this one.”

Tunsil, 31, has started all 14 games in his first season with the Commanders after being acquired in an offseason trade with the Houston Texans. He has played on 90% of the offensive snaps. He twice left last Sunday’s home win over the New York Giants because of injuries.

Cornerback Jonathan Jones (rib), a full participant on Wednesday, did not practice on Thursday and is questionable for Saturday, as is defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton (illness).

Report: Eagles’ Jalen Carter out vs. Chargers, week-to-week after procedure

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter will sit out the game on Monday against the host Los Angeles Chargers after undergoing a procedure earlier this week to repair his shoulders, ESPN reported on Thursday.

Per the report, Carter is considered week-to-week and wanted to get the procedure completed to enable him to be as close to 100 percent as possible for the playoff run for the Eagles (8-4).

Carter, 24, recorded four tackles and one sack while playing 70.1% of the defensive snaps in Philadelphia’s 24-15 loss to the Chicago Bears last Friday.

He has 32 tackles and two sacks in 10 games (all starts) this season for the Eagles. He was ejected before the first play from scrimmage in Philadelphia’s season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

A Pro Bowl selection in 2024, Carter has totaled 107 tackles and 12.5 sacks in 42 career games (26 starts) with the Eagles. He was selected by the team with the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Georgia.

Eagles DT Jalen Carter (heel) out vs. Giants for TNF

The Philadelphia Eagles ruled out defensive tackle Jalen Carter for Thursday night’s Week 6 game against the New York Giants, sidelining the third-year linchpin with a heel injury after he was a late addition to the final injury report.

Carter is on the Eagles’ inactive list after he was seen on the field pregame at MetLife Stadium, but did not go through a warmup of any kind. With Carter unavailable, Philadelphia will lean on a rotation of Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo, Za’Darius Smith, Byron Young, rookie Ty Robinson and practice-squad elevation Gabe Hall.

Left guard Landon Dickerson (ankle) and tight end Grant Calcaterra (oblique) were also inactive after being ruled out on Wednesday.

Carter, 24, had been active for each game this season before Thursday, although he was ejected for spitting from the season opener vs. Dallas before playing a snap. He was limited in Wednesday’s estimated walkthrough, his first appearance on the injury report this week.

He has 10 tackles, a tackle for loss and six quarterback hits on the year. In three seasons with the Eagles, Carter has notched 85 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.

Eagles DT Jalen Carter draws second fine of season

Philadelphia star defensive tackle Jalen Carter was fined by the NFL for the second time this season, this time for his behavior in the Eagles’ comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams last week.

The league announced Saturday that Carter was fined $11,593 for unsportsmanlike conduct/taunting for his actions in the fourth quarter of the Eagles’ 33-26 win.

With 8:40 left in Sunday’s game, Carter blocked a field goal attempt by Rams kicker Joshua Karty, giving the Eagles possession. After the block, Carter gestured towards the Rams players, an act that drew a taunting penalty.

Carter was previously fined for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in the Eagles’ 24-20 win in Week 1.

He was ejected from the season opener when he spat on Prescott before the first play from scrimmage, then fined his Week 1 game check for the act. Carter makes $57,222 per week, per ESPN, making the fine the largest of the season.

Carter, 24, apologized after the game and promised it wouldn’t happen again.

“You know, it was a mistake that happened on my side, and it just won’t happen again,” Carter told reporters after the game. “I feel bad for just my teammates and the fans out there. You know, I’m doing it for them.

“I’m doing it for my family also but the fans, they show the most love. You heard them out there and not being able to start the game to finish the game just [expletive] up, but it won’t happen again.”

Carter was a Pro Bowler last season after racking up 4.5 sacks among his 12 tackles for loss, plus six pass deflections and two forced fumbles. He was the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, sliding after legal troubles popped up around the time of the scouting combine.

Eagles DT Jalen Carter fined, not suspended for Week 2 after Spit-Gate

Philadelphia Eagles star defensive tackle Jalen Carter will be eligible for their Week 2 Super Bowl rematch at the Kansas City Chiefs after spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott last week.

Carter was ejected from the Cowboys game Thursday when he spat on Prescott before the first play from scrimmage of the season opener. The NFL announced Tuesday that it will fine Carter his Week 1 game check and consider that his one-game suspension without pay. ESPN reported that Carter makes $57,222 per week.

“Because Carter was disqualified before participating in a single play, the suspension is considered to have been served in Week 1 and he will forfeit his game check,” the league said in a release.

Carter will not appeal the discipline and move on to face the Chiefs on Sunday.

Prescott gave his side of the story after the Eagles beat the Cowboys 24-20, saying that he spat on the ground while talking to a teammate and Carter believed the quarterback spat at him. The two exchanged words while there was a stoppage in play following the opening kickoff, before Carter spat on Prescott with an official nearby.

Carter, 24, apologized after the game and promised it wouldn’t happen again.

Nick Sirianni: Eagles expect NFL ruling on Jalen Carter this week

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter could face a suspension for spitting at Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in the first game of the NFL season last Thursday.

Head coach Nick Sirianni said the team should know more about any punishment or discipline for Carter this week.

“You are constantly trying to help guys not only become better football players but better men. I think that’s more important. You are always doing what’s best for the team and for those guys in every moment,” Sirianni said in a Tuesday interview with 94 WIP radio in Philadelphia.

“Accountability is so big with our organization. If you brush by mistakes, if you don’t dive into mistakes, those mistakes will linger. I’m not only talking about that incident. I’m talking about everything. There’s a death by inches when you don’t address mistakes, don’t correct mistakes, hold people accountable. That’s myself too, that’s coaches.”

Carter, 24, was ejected from the game, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a radio interview on Tuesday morning with 105.3 FM in Dallas that is enough of a deterrent to prevent players from such in-game conduct.

Asked about reports the Eagles made the best offer to the Cowboys for pass rusher Micah Parsons, Jones admitted there was a conversation but Dallas didn’t make a counter offer.

He said once the team determined it would listen to offers, the phone never stopped ringing, and they settled on a swap for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round picks from the Packers for the 26-year-old Parsons.

Eagles’ Jalen Carter on spitting incident: ‘It was a mistake’

Philadelphia Eagles star defensive tackle Jalen Carter owned up to his “mistake” after he was ejected from Thursday’s 24-20 season-opening victory over the visiting Cowboys after spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott.

Carter was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct after he spat at Prescott after the two exchanged words while there was a stoppage in play following the opening kickoff.

“You know it was a mistake that happened on my side, and it just won’t happen again,” Carter said. “I feel bad for just my teammates and the fans out there. You know, I’m doing it for them. I’m doing it for my family also but the fans, they show the most love. You heard them out there and not being able to start the game to finish the game just (expletive) me up, but it won’t happen again.”

Just before halftime, NBC reported that Carter could face additional discipline, possibly including a suspension.

While not specifically mentioning spitting, the NFL told teams this offseason that respect for opponents will be a bigger emphasis this season. NBC reported that Carter’s actions could fall under this emphasis.

“If I get that text or that call and have that conversation, we will handle it,” Carter said.

Prescott also found himself on the defensive after video replays showed the quarterback spitting in the direction of Carter prior to the incident.

“I was just looking at him and I was right here in between two linemen,” Prescott said. “I guess I needed to spit, and I wasn’t going to spit on my linemen, so I just spit ahead.

“He asked or goes, ‘Are you trying to spit on me?’ At that point, I felt like he was insulting me. I wouldn’t spit on somebody and I’m damn sure not trying to spit on you. We’re trying to play a game and I’m wondering why you’re trying to mess with the rookie (Tyler Booker). I step through and say the words, ‘Why the hell,’ excuse me probably even more colorful but ‘why would I spit on you for?’ He just spit on me in that moment, and it was more of a surprise than anything. The refs obviously saw it and threw a flag. I was like, ‘Hell yeah, we get 15 yards to start the game off.’ I didn’t realize he was getting ejected. Unfortunate that he did and hell of a player.”

Carter, 24, was a Pro Bowler last season after racking up 4.5 sacks among his 12 tackles for loss, plus six pass deflections and two forced fumbles.

He slid to ninth overall in the NFL Draft in 2023 after legal troubles cropped up around the time of the NFL scouting combine. While in college at Georgia, Carter was involved in a street racing crash that took the lives of a player and a staff member. He turned himself in and later pleaded no contest to charges of reckless driving and street racing.

Eagles DT Jalen Carter ejected for spitting on Dak Prescott at start of game

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected before playing a down in the NFL season opener Thursday night when he was caught spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Not long after the host Eagles raised their second Super Bowl championship banner, Philadelphia kicked off to the Cowboys and had a special teamer, Ben VanSumeren, go down with an injury on the play.

The Dallas offense and Philadelphia defense walked onto the field while VanSumeren was being attended to. Suddenly, an official tossed a penalty flag and, after a discussion, Carter was handed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a disqualification.

TV replay footage soon showed Carter having words with Prescott while they stood waiting, followed by Carter spitting at Prescott.

With Carter out of the picture, the Cowboys had little trouble marching down the field and scoring a touchdown on the first drive of the game.
