Vikings sign Brett Rypien, waive fellow QB Jaren Hall

The Minnesota Vikings signed Brett Rypien and waived fellow quarterback Jaren Hall on Thursday.

Rypien will be the third-string quarterback for the Vikings, behind Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens.

Rypien, 28, had signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears on March 13 before being released Wednesday.

Rypien has made four NFL starts since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019 with the Denver Broncos. He has passed for 950 yards, four touchdowns and nine interceptions in 10 games.

Last season, Rypien started for the Rams in a 20-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 9. He was 13 of 28 for 130 yards and one interception and was released two days later.

He had brief stints with the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets later in the season.

Rypien played college football at Boise State and holds the Mountain West career passing yardage record of 13,578. He is the nephew of Mark Rypien, who played 11 NFL seasons (1988-97, 2001) for five teams and was MVP of Super Bowl XXVI for Washington.

Hall, 26, completed 13 of 20 passes for 168 yards and an interception in three games (two starts) last season. He was selected by Minnesota in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of BYU.

The Vikings lost rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, their 2024 first-round draft pick (10th overall), to a season-ending knee injury in the preseason.

Vikings to start rookie QB Jaren Hall against Packers

The Minnesota Vikings will start rookie quarterback Jaren Hall in Sunday night’s must-win game against the visiting Green Bay Packers.

Coach Kevin O’Connell announced Thursday that Hall will make his second start of the season and Nick Mullens will head back to the bench after two straight losses.

The Vikings (7-8) are one game behind the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks in the fight for the final NFC wild-card spots. The Packers, Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are also 7-8.

Hall, a fifth-round choice in the 2023 NFL Draft, sustained a concussion in the first quarter in his first career start on Nov. 5 at Atlanta.

Hall, 25, has completed 8 of 10 passes for 101 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in two games.

Mullens, 28, has completed 69.5 percent of his passes for 797 yards with four TDs and six picks in three games.

The Vikings lost starting quarterback Kirk Cousins to a torn Achilles tendon during their Oct. 29 win at Green Bay.

Vikings plan to start QB Joshua Dobbs vs. Saints

The Vikings are planning to start Joshua Dobbs at quarterback this week against the visiting New Orleans Saints, Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters Monday.

Dobbs said rookie quarterback Jaren Hall is in the concussion protocol, along with wide receiver K.J. Osborn. Both players left Sunday’s win against the Atlanta Falcons with head injuries.

Dobbs — acquired five days before the game in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals — replaced Hall on short notice and guided the Vikings to a come-from-behind, 31-28 victory. Dobbs had a 22-yard scramble late in the game to set up the game-winning touchdown pass to Brandon Powell.

O’Connell said Dobbs will take all the first-team reps in practice this week for the Vikings (5-4), who have won four straight heading into Sunday’s game with the visiting Saints (5-4).

The Vikings are already down Kirk Cousins (torn Achilles) and Nick Mullens (back) at the position, in addition to Hall. Mullens could be activated from injured reserve this week, but O’Connell was not sure of his progress.

Dobbs’ season began in Arizona after the Cardinals, who had to start the season without Kyler Murray, acquired him from the Cleveland Browns at the end of training camp. In eight starts for the Cardinals, Dobbs had 1,569 passing yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions on a 62.8 percent completion rate, plus three rushing TDs.

For the Vikings on Sunday, Dobbs went 20-for-30 for 158 yards and two touchdown passes.

O’Connell also confirmed that running back Cam Akers suffered a ruptured Achilles in the game at Atlanta.

Acquired from the Los Angeles Rams early in the season, Akers appeared in six games for Minnesota and rushed 38 times for 138 yards and one touchdown. He added 11 receptions for 70 yards.

Vikings QB Jaren Hall, WR K.J. Osborn out with concussions

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Jaren Hall and wide receiver K.J. Osborn sustained concussions in the first half and were ruled out for the remainder of Sunday’s game against the host Atlanta Falcons.

Making his first NFL start, Hall was injured as he tried to scramble toward the end zone in the first quarter. He was hit hard at the 1-yard line by Falcons cornerback Jeff Okudah and linebacker Kaden Elliss but was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Hall, a rookie out of BYU, was named the starter this week in place of Kirk Cousins, who tore his right Achilles tendon last Sunday.

Joshua Dobbs came in to replace Hall at quarterback. The Vikings acquired Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Hall completed 5 of 6 pass attempts for 78 yards before he was injured. He also had two rushes for 11 yards.

Osborn was hit hard just after he caught a 13-yard pass, and he stayed motionless on the field for several moments as players from both teams gathered nearby.

Osborn, who had two catches for 17 yards in the game, was able to walk to a cart that took him to the locker room. He gave a thumbs-up signal to the crowd as he sat upright in the back of the cart.
