Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (elbow) out vs. Giants

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the host New York Giants, head coach Dan Quinn announced Wednesday.

Marcus Mariota will draw back in under center for the Commanders (3-10) in place of Daniels, who landed hard on his left elbow during last Sunday’s 31-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Daniels previously dislocated his left elbow during a 38-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 2.

Per Quinn, Daniels did not suffer structural damage to the elbow, and the Commanders — who are eliminated from postseason contention — are not talking about shutting him down for the season.

“As far as what decisions are ahead, we haven’t gone down that road,” Quinn said. “He’s working really hard to get back with the guys.”

Mariota replaced Daniels last Sunday and completed 2 of 4 passes for 30 yards and an interception as Washington lost its eighth straight contest.

Mariota, 32, has completed 62.9% of his passes for 1,389 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions in nine games (six starts) this season.

Daniels, 24, has connected on 60.6% of his passes for 1,262 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions in seven starts this season.

He threw for 3,568 yards with 25 touchdowns while rushing for 891 yards and six scores last season to earn NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Bad to worse: Commanders lose QB Jayden Daniels, TE Zach Ertz

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and tight end Zach Ertz each left Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings because of injuries.

Daniels’ injury marked another low point in a season filled with them for Washington. In the third quarter, he threw an interception to Vikings pass rusher Andrew Van Ginkel and chased after him, but Vikings defensive back Isaiah Rodgers blocked Daniels with a hard shove.

The shove sent Daniels to the turf, where he landed on his left elbow that he had dislocated earlier in the season. Daniels missed the last three games because of the injury and returned Sunday after being cleared for contact only two days earlier.

Daniels was not the only Commanders player who went down with an injury.

Ertz leaped to try to make a catch in the second half and was drilled in his right leg by Vikings defender Jay Ward. The 35-year-old Ertz was helped to a cart on the sideline, where he was emotional as teammates came to offer encouragement.

Commanders turn back to QB Jayden Daniels vs. Vikings

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will make his first start in a month when he faces the host Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in Minneapolis, head coach Dan Quinn announced Friday.

Daniels last started for Washington on Nov. 2 when he sustained a dislocated left elbow during the late stages of Washington’s 38-14 setback to the Seattle Seahawks. The Commanders were trailing 38-7 with just over seven minutes in the game when Daniels was injured while attempting to brace for his fall following a tackle.

He was a full participant in practices Thursday and Friday for the Commanders (3-9), who are mired in a seven-game losing streak heading into the clash versus the Vikings (4-8).

“It’s important for him, for his teammates,” Quinn said of Daniels being back on the field on gameday despite Washington being well out of wild-card reach.

“All these (games) matter. As he’s developing there are certain things he has to work on, too, to be as competitive and take care of things.”

Daniels, 24, has completed 62.5% of his passes for 1,184 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions in six games this season.

He threw for 3,568 yards with 25 touchdowns while rushing for 891 yards and six scores last season to earn NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Reports: No IR, surgery for Commanders QB Jayden Daniels

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has no ligament damage in his right elbow and won’t need surgery or a stint on injured reserve, according to multiple reports on Friday.

An MRI revealed that Daniels does not have damage in the dislocated elbow on his throwing arm, per the reports, and it’s possible he would be ready to return following the Commanders’ bye in Week 12.

Daniels was injured trying to elude Seattle Seahawks defenders last Sunday night in a game that was well out of reach for the Commanders, who trailed 38-7 in the fourth quarter when the second-year quarterback went down. It was Washington’s fourth consecutive loss and third in a row by more than 20 points.

An IR stint would have required Daniels miss four games. He is out Sunday when Washington (3-6) hosts the Detroit Lions (5-3), the fourth start he’s missed this season.

Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed earlier in the week that Daniels was sore and would be sidelined multiple weeks.

Quinn said after the game he was “gutted” by the injury but never considered taking Daniels out of the game despite the lopsided score. A day later, Quinn fell on the sword for lacking the foresight to remove the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Marcus Mariota will start for the fourth time this season on Sunday with Daniels out.

He is 56-of-88 passing for 639 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions this season.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels exits with left elbow injury in loss to Seahawks

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels sustained a left arm injury and exited in the fourth quarter of the 38-14 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night.

On second-and-goal at the 2 with 7:39 left in regulation, Daniels was sacked by Drake Thomas for a 2-yard loss and sustained what Washington coach Dan Quinn confirmed after the game is a left elbow injury. The training staff immobilized the arm and Daniels was able to walk off the field.

Daniels completed 16 of 22 passes for 153 yards and one interception in his return after missing one game with a hamstring injury. He also rushed 10 times for 51 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run near the end of the second quarter.

Following an official timeout due to the injury, the Commanders scored on the next play when Chris Rodriguez ran in from 4 yards for a touchdown, but the Seahawks still led 38-14.

Seattle, winners of three straight, improved to 6-2 while Washington fell to 3-6 with its fourth consecutive loss.

Daniels, 24, missed Washington’s 28-7 loss last Monday night to the Kansas City Chiefs because of a right hamstring strain.

The second-year quarterback suffered that injury in the third quarter of a 44-22 road loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 19. He also sat out two games earlier this season with a knee sprain sustained in a 27-18 Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Daniels entered Sunday having thrown for 1,031 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception in five games (all starts) this season with 211 rushing yards and one rushing score.

Seahawks blow out Commanders, who lose Jayden Daniels (arm) again

Sam Darnold passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns, and the Seattle Seahawks routed the Washington Commanders 38-14 for their third straight win Sunday night in Landover, Md.

Darnold tied the franchise record by completing his first 17 passes and finished 21 of 24. He threw one interception.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, returning after missing one game with a hamstring injury, left in the fourth quarter after sustaining a left elbow injury when he was sacked by Drake Thomas. He had completed 16 of 22 passes for 153 yards and one interception. Daniels ran for a touchdown and 51 yards.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba had eight catches for 129 yards for Seattle (6-2), and Tory Horton had four catches for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

Seattle outgained Washington 418-290.

The Seahawks remained undefeated on the road (4-0), while the reeling Commanders (3-6) lost their fourth straight game.

The Seahawks led 31-7 at halftime. Tight end AJ Barner capped a 60-yard drive when he took a direct snap and scored from the 1 late in the third quarter.

One play after Daniels was injured, Chris Rodriguez Jr. scored on a 4-yard run with 7:14 left to play.

Seattle went 90 yards in 12 plays on its first drive. Darnold threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Horton and the Seahawks led 7-0.

The Seahawks then broke it open with two touchdowns in 11 seconds.

Seven plays after Daniels was intercepted by Ty Okada at the Seattle 40, Horton beat Mike Sainristil off the line and Darnold found him in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown.

When Jaylin Lane fumbled the kick-off, Seattle recovered on the Washington 26, and on the next play, Darnold hit Elijah Arroyo, whose first NFL touchdown made it 21-0 with 8:41 left in the first half.

After a false start penalty wiped out a fourth-and-1 conversion, Washington punted. Seattle started at the 13, and four plays later the score was 28-0.

Darnold hit Smith-Njigba for 22 yards and then found Cody White, who went 60 yards for his first NFL touchdown.

The Commanders got on the board with 53 seconds left in the half after a 10-play, 68-yard drive. Daniels ran 12 yards to the 1-yard line and scored on the next play.

Jason Myers hit a 41-yard field goal as the half ended to make it 31-7.

Darnold finished the half 16-for-16 passing for 282 yards and four touchdowns.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (hamstring) to start vs. Seahawks

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will start their game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, coach Dan Quinn said Friday.

Daniels, 24, missed Washington’s 28-7 loss on Monday night to the Kansas City Chiefs because of a right hamstring strain. He was a full practice participant on Wednesday and Thursday.

The second-year quarterback suffered the injury in the third quarter of a 44-22 road loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 19. He also sat out two games earlier this season with a knee sprain sustained in a 27-18 Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

“Jayden will be back and we’re pumped about that,” Quinn said.

The 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Daniels has thrown for 1,031 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception this season with 211 rushing yards and one rushing score.

Marcus Mariota relieved Daniels in the Cowboys game and has started in his place for three games, playing the entire contests against the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Chiefs. He is 1-2 as a starter this season.

Commanders’ Jayden Daniels optimistic about returning to face Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks will look to keep pace in the NFC West race when they visit the Washington Commanders for a Sunday night matchup.

Seattle (5-2) has won two straight and comes out of its bye tied with the Los Angeles Rams atop the division, a half-game ahead of the San Francisco 49ers.

“We’re doing a lot of great things in terms of finishing plays, and there’s more to be had in really all three phases,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said Wednesday. “The best way I can explain it is, I’m excited about where we are and where we can go.”

The Commanders (3-5) have lost three straight as they were unable to follow up on a 7-7 first half against the Kansas City Chiefs in a 28-7 road loss Monday night. They trail the Philadelphia Eagles by three games in the NFC East and are facing what could be called a must-win game with the Detroit Lions visiting next week.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels (right hamstring) could return to face the Seahawks after missing one game.

“If everything goes right, hopefully I’m out there Sunday night,” Daniels said.

The news was not good regarding Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin. He returned from a four-game absence to oppose the Chiefs and made three catches, including a toe-tap touchdown, but left after reinjuring his right quad and won’t play Sunday.

“We’ll re-evaluate it next week to see where it goes,” Washington coach Dan Quinn said. “Bummed for him. Bummed for us. (It’s) just tough.”

Neither left tackle Laremy Tunsil (hamstring) nor kicker Matt Gay (back) practiced Wednesday. Quinn said he would have a better idea about their status on Friday.

After intercepting Patrick Mahomes twice in the first half Monday night, Washington’s defense gave up touchdowns on three consecutive second-half drives.

“Arrow going up and we’ve still got a lot of our story to write on defense,” Quinn said. “I thought the tackling and the tracking were better. … Created some takeaways. I thought that was a big piece for us in terms of stepping in the right direction.”

Washington had only three takeaways entering Monday night.

The Commanders’ defense — including former Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner — is allowing 372.8 yards per game (27th in the NFL) and will be facing an 11th-ranked Seattle offense that is gaining 350.6 yards per game.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is coming off arguably his worst game of the season, as he completed 17 of 31 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a win over the Houston Texans. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is averaging eight catches for 139 yards and a touchdown over his past three games.

Seahawks kicker Jason Myers has converted 13 of 17 field-goal attempts, including 4 of 6 from 50-plus yards. Gay has hit 10 of 14, including 4 of 7 from 50-plus.

If Daniels can’t go, Marcus Mariota would make his fourth start of the season. He passed for 213 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions Monday night.

“Both operate their offense really well,” Macdonald said, “so the type of plays we’re going to be practicing against and preparing for wouldn’t really change based on who’s playing.”

Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon (knee) was a full practice participant on Wednesday, and outside linebacker Derick Hall (oblique) was limited. Wide receiver/kick returner Dareke Young (quad) did not practice. The Seahawks signed former Bears, Falcons and Saints receiver/kick returner Velus Jones Jr. to the practice squad.

Seattle rookie fullback Robbie Ouzts (ankle) returned to practice, but safety Julian Love (hamstring) did not practice and could miss the Sunday game.

The Seahawks won the teams’ most recent meeting 29-26 on a Myers field goal as time expired in Seattle on Nov. 12, 2023.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (hamstring) expected to return to practice Wednesday

Washington star quarterback Jayden Daniels, who missed the loss on Monday night to the Kansas City Chiefs because of a hamstring injury, is expected to practice in some capacity on Wednesday, Commanders coach Dan Quinn said on Tuesday.

“He had a good rehab session on Sunday,” Quinn said. “The team’s back out at practice (on Wednesday) and we plan on him being a part of that.”

Quinn said he had not met with the medical team prior to Tuesday’s press conference. He said he would have more details on Wednesday on Daniels, wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who aggravated his quad injury, and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, who exited the 28-7 road loss with a hamstring injury.

Daniels, 24, sustained the right hamstring strain in the third quarter of a 44-22 road loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 19. He also sat out two games earlier this season with a knee sprain sustained in Week 2 versus the Green Bay Packers.

The 2024 NFL Rookie of the Year, Daniels has thrown for 1,031 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception this season with 211 rushing yards and one rushing score.

Marcus Mariota relieved Daniels in the Cowboys game and has started in his place for three games, playing the entire way against the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Chiefs.

Mariota, who turns 32 on Thursday, has completed 56 of 88 passes (63.6%) for 639 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has run 18 times for 122 yards and one TD.

The Commanders (3-5), who have lost three consecutive games, host the Seattle Seahawks (5-2) on Sunday night.

Washington released veteran kicker Matthew Wright from the practice squad on Tuesday. Wright was signed to fill in for starter Matt Gay (back issue) against the Chiefs and made his only extra-point attempt while not attempting a field goal.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels avoided long-term injury, questionable for Chiefs game

Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn’s Monday update on starting quarterback Jayden Daniels’ status was a good news and bad news situation.

The good news, Quinn said, is that an MRI exam showed the hamstring injury Daniels sustained in the third quarter of Sunday’s 44-22 loss to the Dallas Cowboys is not a long-term injury.

The bad news, potentially, is that Quinn was unsure about his availability for next Monday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I’ll have a better sense as I get closer to it, with the extra day and what that looks like,” Quinn told reporters Monday. ” … I’ll have a better feel for you guys when we get to Thursday.”

Daniels missed two games earlier this season with a knee sprain sustained in Week 2 vs. Green Bay. The 2024 NFL Rookie of the Year, Daniels has thrown for 1,031 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception this season with 211 rushing yards and one rushing score.

If he’s unable to go, Marcus Mariota would be called upon to make his third start of the season for the Commanders (3-4) against the Chiefs (4-3). The 11th-year backup has thrown for 426 yards, three touchdowns and two picks this season, including one returned for a touchdown after replacing Daniels in Sunday’s loss.
