Ashton Jeanty continues Heisman push as No. 17 Boise State tops UNLV

Heisman Trophy front-runner Ashton Jeanty rushed for 128 yards and one touchdown to help No. 17 Boise State notch a 29-24 victory over UNLV on Friday night in a Mountain West showdown in Las Vegas.

Maddux Madsen connected on 18 of 33 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown and added a rushing score for the Broncos (6-1, 3-0). Matt Lauter caught a touchdown pass for Boise State, which defeated UNLV for the eighth straight time.

Hajj-Malik Williams completed 12 of 21 passes for 179 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Rebels (6-2, 2-1). He also rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts.

Jaden Bradley and Kaleo Ballungay caught touchdown passes for UNLV, which last topped a ranked opponent in 2008 (Arizona State).

Jeanty carried the ball a career-high 33 times but had trouble finding holes in a UNLV defense that was intent on stopping him. Though he topped 100 yards for the seventh straight time this season, his long run was just 16 yards while raising his national-leading rushing yardage total to 1,376.

Jeanty plunged in on fourth-and-goal from the UNLV 1-yard line to give the Broncos the winning points with 12:38 remaining in the game. The ensuing two-point conversion pass was incomplete.

UNLV scored two third-quarter touchdowns to take a 24-23 edge.

Williams scored on a 5-yard run to start the second half and pull the Rebels within three. Jonah Dalmas answered with a 29-yard field goal to give the Broncos a 23-17 lead.

UNLV moved ahead on Williams’ 34-yard scoring pass to Bradley with 1:03 remaining in the quarter.

Dalmas (37 yards) and UNLV’s Caden Chittenden (28) traded field goals early in the game before Williams tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to the wide-open Ballungay to give the Rebels a 10-3 lead with 4:30 left in the opening quarter.

Dalmas kicked a 44-yard field goal with 9:22 left in the second quarter before the Broncos scored two late touchdowns during a 17-point quarter for a 20-10 halftime lead.

Madsen scored on a 7-yard scramble with 1:50 left to give Boise State a three-point lead. Then Andrew Simpson intercepted Williams’ pass and returned it 25 yards to the UNLV 7, setting up Madsen’s 2-yard pass to Lauter with six seconds remaining.

Heisman Trophy Odds: Miami’s Cam Ward slices into Ashton Jeanty’s cushion

Ashton Jeanty was effectively helpless in watching a big chunk of his edge in the Heisman Trophy race evaporate over the weekend.

With Boise State (5-1) and its star running back idle in Week 8, Miami quarterback Cam Ward took advantage by throwing for 319 yards and fourth touchdowns in a 52-45 victory at Louisville. The sixth-ranked Hurricanes improved to 7-0, and Ward saw his Heisman Trophy odds slashed from +650 to +250 by DraftKings.

Jeanty is still the +220 favorite, but lengthened from +160 despite not playing. Last week, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel had the second-shortest odds at +400. He is now +380 after the Ducks won 35-0 at Purdue on Friday night.

Gabriel and the Ducks may have ultimately done Jeanty a favor, however. Oregon rose to No. 1 in the country, and Boise State’s lone loss so far was a narrow 37-34 defeat at Oregon on Sept. 7 in a game in which Jeanty rushed for 192 yards and a trio of touchdowns.

Ward’s 400-point upward swing was among the biggest this week. Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders enjoyed a +1000-point rise to +5000.

Going the opposite direction was Sanders’ teammate Travis Hunter, who had the fifth-shortest odds last week. However, the two-way star tumbled to +2000 after catching only two passes for 17 yards in the Buffaloes’ 34-7 rout of Arizona. Hunter has only five receptions for 43 yards in Colorado’s past two games.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who was briefly benched in the Longhorns’ loss to Georgia, essentially fell out of the race after plummeting from +2500 to +7500. Despite the win and the Bulldogs rising to No. 2 in the country, quarterback Carson Beck slipped from +1600 to +2500 following his three-interception performance.

The other notable drop this week was suffered by Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. The Heisman Trophy favorite for a week earlier this season, Milroe is now +7500 after the Crimson Tide’s second loss of the season, 24-17 at Tennessee.

Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty trying to run away with Heisman – and records

If Ashton Jeanty keeps up his current pace much longer, Boise State’s star running back can start turning his focus to bigger historical achievements because the Heisman Trophy may already be in the bag.

After amassing more than 200 rushing yards for the third time in six games this season, Jeanty’s Heisman Trophy odds at DraftKings shortened from +225 to +160. It helped that Colorado lost, contributing to two-way star Travis Hunter seeing his odds dip from +300 to +1200.

But it was much more about Jeanty, who leads the nation with 1,248 yards and 17 touchdowns on just 126 carries — a 9.9-yard average. Still in sight is Barry Sanders’ 1988 records of 2,628 yards and 37 rushing touchdowns for Oklahoma State.

Jeanty has 1,380 yards and 20 touchdowns to go to catch Sanders, with Boise State still having six regular-season and very likely at least one bowl or playoff game to go.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who opened the season as the Heisman favorite, is back to owning the second-shortest odds at +400 after the Ducks knocked off No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday. His +1100 positive odds delta was the second-biggest move this week behind LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier moving from +4500 to +3000 after orchestrating an overtime win against Ole Miss.

Going in the opposite direction was Southern Cal quarterback Miller Moss, who plummeted from +4000 to +15000 following the Trojans’ third loss of the season.

Ashton Jeanty, Travis Hunter new Heisman Trophy favorites

For the first time this year, a pair of non-quarterbacks — Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter — sit atop the DraftKings Heisman Trophy odds, replacing Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, who held the top spot until this week.

Jeanty, who leads the nation with 1,031 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, leapfrogged Milroe, Hunter and Miami quarterback Cam Ward to take the spot at +225. Jeanty moved up from +1000 last week after not appearing on the odds list in July or in Week 1.

Hunter, who leads the Big 12 with 46 receptions and also has six TDs and 561 receiving yards, moved up from +700 last week to +300 this week. Hunter, who as a cornerback also has two interceptions, 16 tackles (including one for loss), three pass breakups and a forced fumble this season, did not appear on the odds list in Week 1 or July, either.

Fresh off leading a historic 25-point comeback in Miami’s 39-38 victory over Cal on Saturday, Ward moved up to third at +400 after coming in at +500 last week. Ward, who leads the nation in passing yards (2,219) and touchdown passes (20), has moved up from +2200 in July and +950 in Week 1.

Milroe, who came in at a season-high +250 last week, dropped to fourth at +1100 after Alabama’s 40-35 upset loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday. He was also at +1100 in Week after 1 after coming in at +1500 in July.

Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who threw two touchdowns in last week’s win over Michigan State, remains firmly in the running at +1500 after coming in at +1400 last week.

Meanwhile, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik (+1600) improved his odds with another strong performance last week against Florida State, moving past Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart (+1800) and Texas QB Quinn Ewers (+2000).

Saturday, August 31, 2024; Statesboro, Georgia; Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty gains yardage against Georgia Southern during the season opener on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia.

Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty sets school mark with 267 rushing yards

Boise State preseason All-American running back Ashton Jeanty set school records of 267 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns in the Broncos’ 56-45 victory over host Georgia Southern on Saturday.

Jeanty, who carried the ball 20 times, had a career-long 77-yard scoring run in the first quarter and a 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth. It marks the third time the junior has posted a 200-yard rushing game in his career.

“I’ve got to shout out my O-line,” Jeanty said afterward. “They opened up big, wide holes all game. I’ve got the easy part: Make some guys miss and go run to the end zone.”

Jeanty earned some first-team All-American honors last season when he rushed for 1,347 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught 43 passes for 569 yards and five scores. He was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year.

Jeanty gets a big-time test next Saturday when Boise State visits No. 3 Oregon.

Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty coming back for ’24

Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson knows the centerpiece of the Broncos’ offense isn’t going anywhere.

Running back Ashton Jeanty confirmed he’s returning for the 2024 season after leading the nation in yards from scrimmage this season.

A sophomore, Jeanty contemplated entering the transfer portal before Danielson’s promotion from interim head coach to full-time head coach became official on Sunday. Jeanty earned Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2023. He had 39 receptions for 552 receiving yards and five touchdowns and was sixth in the FBS in rushing at 114.7 yards per game, gaining 1,262 yards with 14 rushing TDs in 11 games.

“He’s an incredible person with a good head on his shoulders that loves his teammates and this place. I’m excited for what’s next at Boise State and there’s no one I’d rather do it with than Ashton Jeanty. It’s time to get started,” Danielson said.

Jeanty proclaimed himself a “Bronco for Life” and cited the desire to grow his own legacy with a commitment to Boise State in announcing his return via X on Tuesday.

“Knowing the legacy I can leave behind and the impact that I can have to change people’s lives is important, and I appreciate the opportunity to do that for a program that changed my life by believing in me when no one else did. I love this city and the people here. This decision feels good. It feels right. It is final,” he wrote.

Jeanty said he plans to play in the LA Bowl later this month, but Boise State is not likely to have quarterback Taylen Green when it takes on UCLA.

Jeanty had 21 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown in the MWC championship win over UNLV on Saturday.
