Reports: Titans acquiring Pro Bowl DE Jermaine Johnson from Jets

The Tennessee Titans are acquiring former first-round pass rusher Jermaine Johnson from the New York Jets in exchange for defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat, multiple media outlets reported on Thursday.

The reported trade cannot become official until the first day of the new league year on March 11.

A Pro Bowl selection in 2023, Johnson has totaled 131 tackles and 13.0 sacks in 47 career games (32 starts) since being selected by the Jets with the 26th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Sweat, 24, had 34 tackles in 12 games (all starts) last season with the Titans.

He has totaled 85 tackles and three sacks in 29 career games (28 starts) since being selected by Tennessee in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Jets place DE Jermaine Johnson (Achilles) on IR, ending his season

The New York Jets placed defensive end Jermaine Johnson on injured reserve on Thursday because of a ruptured right Achilles tendon, ending his season, and signed defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Jets also called up linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball for their home game Thursday night against the New England Patriots. Standout linebacker C.J. Mosley is listed as questionable with a toe injury.

Johnson, 25, was injured on a non-contact play while rushing Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis in the third quarter of Sunday’s 24-17 road win. He immediately grabbed his right leg and was eventually carted off the field.

“Thank everyone for all the prayers and support!” Johnson, a Pro Bowl selection as an injury replacement in 2023, said in a social media post on Monday. “This is not a dark time for me, although there will be dark days ahead, this is Gods way for me to not only grow as a man, person and player but to also inspire others to as well.”

The Jets traded into the bottom of the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft to select Johnson No. 26 overall. In 33 career games (19 starts), he has amassed 88 tackles, 10 sacks, seven pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble.

Holmes, 28, has four tackles in two games for the Jets this season. He played in five games for New York in 2023, totaling five tackles and a sack. He’s also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings (2018-20), New Orleans Saints (2021) and Chicago Bears (2022). Holmes has 69 tackles, including eight tackles for loss and two sacks, and six quarterback hits in 41 career games (10 starts).

McCrary-Ball, 25, appeared in two games for the Jets last season, when he spent most of the campaign on the practice squad.

Jets DE Jermaine Johnson confirms torn Achilles, done for year

New York Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson confirmed reports that he tore his right Achilles tendon in a social media post Monday.

The Jets’ third-year pass rusher, a Pro Bowl selection as an injury replacement in 2023, is expected to miss the rest of the season with the injury suffered in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans.

The post was accompanied by a video that showed Johnson using a leg scooter in the Jets’ facility. He said MRI results came back Monday, making his diagnosis official.

“Thank everyone for all the prayers and support! This is not a dark time for me, although there will be dark days ahead, this is Gods way for me to not only grow as a man, person and player but to also inspire others to as well,” Johnson wrote, vowing that he will “be back and better.”

Johnson’s injury will likely make the absence of Haason Reddick even more apparent. The Jets traded for Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason, but Reddick has held out for essentially his entire stint with the Jets as he seeks a long-term contract. He has already forfeited two game checks on top of racking up more than $5 million in fines.

Jets coach Robert Saleh told reporters that starting linebacker C.J. Mosley injured his big toe during the Titans game. He didn’t reveal whether it was a turf toe injury, but didn’t rule Mosley out for the Week 3 home opener against the New England Patriots on Thursday despite the short week.

Jets rookie DE Jermaine Johnson (ankle) out vs. Packers

New York Jets rookie defensive end Jermaine Johnson has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the host Green Bay Packers.

“Jermaine, dealing with his ankle, is going to be out. He’s going to be evaluated daily, so we’ll see where he’s at next week,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said on Friday morning. “Everybody else will be a full participant (in practice).”

Johnson, 23, has recorded 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks in five games since being selected by New York with the 26th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Linebacker Quincy Williams is expected to return from a two-game absence due to an ankle injury, Saleh said.

Williams, 26, has totaled 18 tackles and one sack in three games this season.

He has 187 tackles, four forced fumbles and three sacks in 37 career games (24 starts) with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Jets.
