Report: Raiders to release DT Jerry Tillery

The Las Vegas Raiders will release defensive tackle Jerry Tillery with the start of the new league year on Wednesday, ESPN reported Saturday.

Tillery was the No. 28 overall pick of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019 and waived by the team and then-general manager Tom Telesco on Nov. 10, 2022. The Raiders claimed him off waivers days later and signed him to a two-year, $6.8 million contract in March 2023.

Telesco is now in charge with the Raiders, hired as general manager in January.

Tillery, 27, was due a $1.5 million roster bonus next week, and his 2024 salary would have guaranteed. The Raiders will take a dead cap hit of $375,000.

In 25 games (10 starts) with the Raiders, Tillery recorded 31 tackles, two quarterback hits and two sacks with one fumble recovery.

He has played in 79 career games (39 starts) with 147 tackles, 14 quarterback hits, 12.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Chargers waive former first-round pick Jerry Tillery

The Los Angeles Chargers waived defensive lineman Jerry Tillery, a former first-round pick.

“Jerry has been a valued member of our organization since arriving in 2019, and I want to thank him for all his contributions to the Chargers,” general manager Tom Telesco said in a statement on Thursday. “This was not an easy decision but, after careful consideration, it was a necessary one that is in the best interest of both team and player. We wish Jerry all the best moving forward in his career.”

A Notre Dame product, Tillery was the No. 28 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In May, the Chargers declined his fifth-year option, which would have paid him a guaranteed $10.753 million in 2023.

Tillery, 26, set career highs with 51 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 16 games (15 starts) last season. This season, he has appeared in seven games and has recorded eight tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.

In three-plus seasons with the Chargers, Tillery appeared in 54 games (29 starts), posting 106 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 33 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Chargers put DL Joey Bosa, Jerry Tillery on COVID list

The Los Angeles Chargers put defensive linemen Joey Bosa and Jerry Tillery on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday.

The three-time Pro Bowler Bosa has 5.5 sacks on the season while Tillery has 2.5. Bosa has played 83 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and Tillery 81 percent.

It’s unclear if the pair are vaccinated. If they are, they still have a shot to play this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If they’re not, they will have to miss at least 10 days. They join linebacker Drue Tranquill on the COVID list.

Bosa has 28 tackles, 11 hits on the quarterback and three forced fumbles on the season. Tillery has 30 tackles and eight quarterback hits.

The Sunday night contest in L.A. is an important one for both teams. The Chargers (5-4) are tied in the loss column of the AFC West with the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders. The Steelers (5-3-1) are looking up at the Baltimore Ravens in the packed-together AFC North.

The Steelers put Minkah Fitzpatrick on the COVID list Monday and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger missed Week 10 on the list and has yet to be cleared to come off.
