Panthers hire Jim Caldwell as senior assistant

The Carolina Panthers hired former two-time NFL head coach Jim Caldwell as a senior assistant Tuesday.

Caldwell, 68, will report directly to head coach Frank Reich and help out on all three phases — offense, defense and special teams, the team announced.

He becomes the second coach to join the Panthers after interviewing for the head coaching vacancy that eventually went to Reich. Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero is the other.

The hire reunites Caldwell and Reich, who both coached on Tony Dungy’s staff in Indianapolis starting in 2006. Reich was an intern then while Caldwell was assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach. Reich became Caldwell’s QBs coach in Indy when the latter was hired to replace a retiring Dungy in 2009.

Caldwell went 62-50 as head coach for the Colts (2009-11) and Detroit Lions (2014-17), taking each team to the postseason twice. He was also a head coach at Wake Forest from 1993-2000.

In addition to Evero, the Panthers have added Josh McCown as QBs coach and Dom Capers as a senior defensive assistant. Capers was the head coach of the expansion Panthers from 1995-98.

The Panthers are also interviewing for the offensive coordinator role after parting ways with Ben McAdoo. They’re reportedly interviewing the Rams’ Thomas Brown a second time. Brown, however, is also an OC candidate for Tampa Bay.

Reports: Panthers to interview Jim Caldwell, Frank Reich

The Carolina Panthers are expected to interview former NFL head coaches Jim Caldwell and Frank Reich for their head coaching vacancy, multiple outlets reported.

Steve Wilks, who finished the season as interim head coach, is also a candidate for the job.

Caldwell, 67, is 62-50 as a head coach with the Indianapolis Colts (2009-11) and Detroit Lions (2014-17). He went 2-4 in playoff games and coached the Colts to Super Bowl XLIV, where they lost to New Orleans. He has not worked in the NFL since serving as the Miami Dolphins’ assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach in 2019.

Reich, 61, was fired Nov. 7 by the Colts after a 3-5-1 start to the season. He went 40-33-1 overall in four-plus seasons in Indy.

Wilks was promoted after Matt Rhule was fired by Panthers owner David Tepper, who said he was seeking a cultural reset for the franchise.

Tepper had a conversation — not an interview — with Jim Harbaugh about the post last week. However, it was reported Sunday that Harbaugh’s camp initiated the call with Tepper. It’s unclear if Harbaugh will get a formal interview.

Bears to line up second interviews with Dan Quinn, Jim Caldwell

The Chicago Bears have narrowed their list of candidates for their head coaching vacancy.

The Bears will request second interviews with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and ex-Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell, according to multiple reports Monday.

In addition, current Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will have his second interview for the job on Wednesday, and New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will get his first interview Tuesday.

Quinn is considered to be among the top candidates of the hiring cycle. The former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Quinn led that franchise to an appearance in Super Bowl LI, and helped resurrect the Dallas defense in his first season with the Cowboys. Quinn went 43-42 in five-plus seasons with the Falcons.

Caldwell coached the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-11 and the Lions from 2014-17, compiling a 62-50 career record and four playoff appearances in those seven seasons. He has not worked in the NFL since serving as the Miami Dolphins’ assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach in 2019.

The Bears are also interviewing candidates for the general manager position concurrently with coach interviews. Chicago fired coach Matt Nagy and GM Ryan Pace on Jan. 10 following a 6-11 season.

Jim Caldwell denies report he turned down NFL interviews

Former NFL head coach Jim Caldwell refuted a report that he turned down two chances to interview with NFL teams seeking a new coach.

ESPN reported earlier this week that Caldwell declined interview requests from the Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders, but he issued a statement Saturday that said the news was false.

“I would like to correct an erroneous report that I turned down opportunities to interview for the head coaching job with Minnesota and Las Vegas. Those reports are not true,” Caldwell tweeted Saturday.

“I have profound respect for both organizations and for the Wilf and Davis families and I did not decline any opportunity to interview with them.”

The ESPN report said Caldwell rebuffed the interviews because he believed he had the inside track for the head coaching jobs with either the Chicago Bears or Jacksonville Jaguars.

Caldwell, 67, previously was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts (2009-11) and Detroit Lions (2014-17). He led the Colts to a 26-22 record and the Lions to a 36-28 mark during his tenure.

The Colts were 2-2 in the playoffs during his tenure, and the Lions went 0-2.
