Three wins proved good enough for the New York Giants to bring back general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll for 2025.

Despite a 3-14 season and rumors of a change atop of the organization, Giants co-owners Steve Tisch and John Mara retained the team’s leadership on Monday.

“Now that our season is over, we felt it necessary to make this statement: Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization,” Mara said in a statement. “As disappointing as the results of the season have been, Steve and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team. We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire.”

New York moved on from quarterback Daniel Jones during the season and flipped between backups Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock throughout a losing streak that reached 10 games before a 45-33 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Dec. 29. That win bumped the Giants from the No. 1 overall draft pick before they ended the season on Sunday with a 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Daboll began his coaching career with a 7-2 record and the Giants reached the playoffs at 9-7-1 in 2022. But they fell to 6-11 in 2023 and opted not to re-sign running back Saquon Barkley in March 2024, when he landed with Philadelphia.

Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards and had 15 total touchdowns with the Eagles this season.

OBJ teases to Saquon Barkley: Tell Giants GM to call my agent

Free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has reached out to a familiar face in order to potentially facilitate a return to the New York Giants.

Beckham and Giants running back Saquon Barkley had an exchange on social media that indicated the former would like the latter to speak to general manager Joe Schoen on his behalf.

“Tell Joe call my agent,” Beckham wrote on Twitter, punctuating it with a laughing emoji. “I got some more (stuff) left to do.”

New Giants GM would entertain trade calls for Saquon Barkley

Joe Schoen, the new general manager of the New York Giants, said he’s willing to listen to trade offers that could help him improve the team’s roster and salary cap situation — including offers for running back Saquon Barkley.

At the scouting combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Schoen was asked about Barkley in particular and whether he’d pick up the phone for a potential trade.

“We’re still working through that, but I’m open to anything. Like whether it’s trading player for player. I’ll listen to anybody,” Schoen told reporters. “I’m not going to say we’re open for business on our entire roster. But if anybody is going to call and they’re interested in any of our players, I’ll certainly listen.

“I’m not going to say yes to every deal,” he added, “but I’m definitely going to listen and be open to situations that are best for the New York Giants.”

Barkley, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft, had a terrific debut season that earned him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. But he has struggled to stay healthy in the years since. He’s started 44 games in four NFL seasons, including just two in 2020 before an ACL tear ended his season.

In 2021, Barkley ran for just 593 yards (3.7 per carry) and two touchdowns across 13 games. He also caught 41 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

The Giants need to drop roughly $12 million in salary to get under the cap for the new league year. Barkley will make a guaranteed $7.2 million on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract in 2022.

Schoen also trotted out a well-worn caveat when asked about his starting quarterback situation, saying, “Daniel Jones is our starting quarterback right now.”

New Giants GM: Daniel Jones is the team’s quarterback

New Giants general manager Joe Schoen met the New York media for the first time on Wednesday and delivered a clear message: Daniel Jones will be the team’s quarterback in 2022.

“I’ve looked at Daniel,” Schoen said at his introductory news conference. “Once the new staff gets in here, we’re going to get together — offensive coordinator, head coach, the entire staff — dive into the film as a group and look at what Daniel does best and we’re going to try to allow him to put his best foot forward.”

Jones struggled in 2021 under head coach Joe Judge, who was fired at the end of the season after two years at the helm. Schoen sounded ready to wipe the slate clean when it comes to Jones.

“I’ve looked at him. I wasn’t here in the past, so I don’t exactly know what he was told to do, but I do know this: I know he’s a great kid,” Schoen said. ” … There’s not anybody in this building that’s said a bad word about his work ethic, passion, desire to win, and I think you’ve got to have those traits as a quarterback. The kid has physical ability. He’s got arm strength, he’s athletic, he can run. I’m really excited to work with Daniel.”

Jones was on hand at the news conference, as was Giants co-owner John Mara, who threw his support behind Jones and discounted any notion that the team would try to trade for disgruntled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Watson was inactive all 17 weeks of the season for the Texans as he faces civil lawsuits from 22 women who accused him of sexual misconduct.

“We’re not trading for Deshaun Watson,” Mara said. “There are so many reasons why we wouldn’t do that. Cap-wise, we couldn’t afford it, but more importantly with the allegations that are out there right now, that’s just not the right fit for us.”

Instead, it will be back to the drawing board for Jones with a new staff – something Mara undoubtedly will be happy to see.

“We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up since he’s been here,” Mara said. “… We certainly have not given up on Daniel Jones.”

Jones, 24, was limited to 11 games because of a neck injury sustained in a Week 12 win over the Philadelphia Eagles that ended his season. Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, completed 232 passes for 2,428 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions on the season.

Since taking over from two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning in 2019, Jones is 12-25 as the starting quarterback, throwing for 8,398 total yards with 45 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

If Schoen is to turn around the fortunes of the franchise — the Giants have played in one playoff game since winning the Super Bowl following the 2011 season — that will start with the head coach he brings on board. Since Schoen’s hiring on Friday, the Giants have had two interviews with Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and also interviewed defensive coordinators Leslie Frazier (Bills), Lou Anarumo (Cincinnati Bengals) and Dan Quinn (Dallas Cowboys).

Schoen most recently was the assistant general manager of the Bills, so he has familiarity with both Daboll and Frazier.

Bills’ Joe Schoen interviews for Giants’ GM opening

Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen became the first to interview for the New York Giants’ general manager vacancy on Wednesday.

Schoen spoke by videoconference with team president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch and senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara.

The Giants said that initial interviews with candidates to replace Dave Gettleman, who announced his retirement Monday, will be conducted remotely.

Schoen has 20 years of scouting and executive experience in the NFL, including the last five with the Bills. Before joining Buffalo in 2017 he spent most of the previous decade with the Miami Dolphins, including four years as the director of player personnel.

Schoen, 42, also worked with the Carolina Panthers (2001-07) under current Bills general manager Brandon Beane.

The Giants fired head coach Joe Judge on Tuesday after two seasons, including a 4-13 finish in 2021.
