Chargers DE Joey Bosa back from IR ahead of playoffs

The Los Angeles Chargers designated star defensive end Joey Bosa to return from injured reserve as the playoff-bound team prepares for Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

The designation opens a 21-day practice window for Bosa, with a return for Sunday’s game still to be determined.

Bosa, 27, hasn’t played since Week 3 when he came away with a groin injury in a 38-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The four-time Pro Bowl selection was coming off a 2021 season when he had 10.5 sacks, his fourth career season reaching double digits.

The Chargers have been injury-prone all season, with Bosa the last of the team’s stars to make a return. Quarterback Justin Herbert played through fractured rib cartilage, while top wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams missed time.

Despite the personnel issues, the Chargers clinched their second playoff berth in nine seasons when they earned a 20-3 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night. The Chargers can’t catch the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC West title, meaning their final two regular-season games will be used for playoff preparations.

The Chargers’ defense has been improving late in the season, allowing an average of 11.3 points over their last three games, all victories.

After the victory over the Colts, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler was anticipating Bosa’s return, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“At the end of the day, it’s going to take defense to win championships,” said Ekeler, who has 16 combined rushing and receiving touchdowns. “Our defense playing like that — and if we get Joey back — my goodness. I’m looking forward to watching these boys fly around.”

Report: Chargers DE Joey Bosa to practice this week

Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Joey Bosa will return to practice this week, NFL Network reported Sunday.

The 27-year-old defensive end was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 28 and had surgery to repair a groin tear.

The initial prognosis projected that Bosa would be sidelined for eight to 10 weeks.

He exited a Week 3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first half after grabbing at his upper right leg. He left the field under his own power but threw his helmet to the ground before heading to the locker room.

Bosa, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, has 1.5 sacks on the season and four quarterback hits. In seven seasons, all with the Chargers, he has 298 tackles with 59 1/2 sacks in 82 games (77 starts).

Chargers DE Joey Bosa to have groin surgery

Los Angeles Chargers Pro Bowl pass rusher Joey Bosa will undergo surgery on his groin and be placed on injured reserve.

Chargers coach Brandon Staley said Wednesday that Bosa is expected to return later this season. Bosa suffered what Staley called a “significant” groin injury in last Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville.

The Chargers lost left tackle Rashawn Slater to a season-ending biceps injury earlier this week.

Bosa exited Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars in the first half. He was trying to circle around left end in the first quarter when he hit the ground and grabbed at his upper right leg.

Chargers DE Joey Bosa out with groin injury

Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a groin injury.

Bosa was trying to circle around left end in the first quarter when he hit the ground and grabbed at his upper right leg. He left the field under his own power but threw his helmet to the ground before departing to the locker room.

It was yet another injury to a key player for the Chargers, who were without wide receiver Keenan Allen because of a hamstring injury. Quarterback Justin Herbert has a rib injury but was activated just before Sunday’s game.

Bosa had one tackle before he left the game with 2:50 remaining in the opening quarter. He has seven tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in three games this season.

In seven NFL seasons, all with the Chargers, the four-time Pro Bowl selection has 298 tackles with 59 1/2 sacks in 82 games (78 starts).

Chargers add Austin Ekeler, Jalen Guyton to COVID-19 list

The Los Angeles Chargers officially placed running back Austin Ekeler on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, while wide receiver Jalen Guyton also was designated to the list.

The Chargers now have 11 players on the reserve/COVID list, with multiple reports saying that Sunday’s road game against the Houston Texans is on schedule to be played.

Ekeler was reported to be headed to the list earlier this week, along with defensive end Joey Bosa. On Monday, the Chargers ruled Bosa out for Sunday, but Ekeler was not officially put on the list until Wednesday.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said Wednesday that he is hopeful Ekeler and Guyton both will end up playing Sunday.

Along with Ekeler, Guyton and Bosa, other Chargers players on the reserve/COVID list include center Corey Linsley, quarterback Chase Daniel, cornerback Tevaughn Campbell, linebacker Chris Rumph, defensive back Kemon Hall, wide receiver Andre Roberts, defensive end Joe Gaziano and safety Trey Marshall.

The Texans added three players to the reserve/COVID list Wednesday and now have 18 players listed. Players added Wednesday included wide receiver Brandin Cooks, kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn and linebacker Eric Wilson.

Reports: Chargers’ Austin Ekeler, Joey Bosa to go on COVID list

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler, defensive end Joey Bosa and center Corey Linsley are being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

The Chargers, however, have yet to announce any such moves as of early Monday afternoon. The team is expected to add more names to the list, per the reports.

Ekeler, 26, leads the team in carries (173), rushing yards (789) and rushing touchdowns (10) in 14 games this season. He also ranks third in catches (62) and receiving yards (558), while his seven receiving scores are tied with Mike Williams for the club lead.

Bosa, 30, went on the COVID-19 list last month as a close contact, however, he did not miss a game. The three-time Pro Bowl selection has 9.5 sacks and six forced fumbles to go along with 43 tackles this season.

Linsley, 30, has started all 14 games this season for the Chargers and 113 in which he has played in his NFL career.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa exits vs. Bengals with apparent head injury

Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa left early in Sunday’s game against the Bengals in Cincinnati and was being evaluated for a head injury.

Bosa left the field for the locker room midway through the first quarter, as the Chargers were building a healthy 16-0 lead over the opening 15 minutes. It was unclear when the injury occurred or what the severity might be.

Bosa, 26, had multiple concussions last year. The three-time Pro Bowler ultimately missed four games in 2020.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Bosa had 7.5 sacks, 36 tackles and four forced fumbles for the Chargers in 11 contests.

Chargers put DL Joey Bosa, Jerry Tillery on COVID list

The Los Angeles Chargers put defensive linemen Joey Bosa and Jerry Tillery on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday.

The three-time Pro Bowler Bosa has 5.5 sacks on the season while Tillery has 2.5. Bosa has played 83 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and Tillery 81 percent.

It’s unclear if the pair are vaccinated. If they are, they still have a shot to play this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If they’re not, they will have to miss at least 10 days. They join linebacker Drue Tranquill on the COVID list.

Bosa has 28 tackles, 11 hits on the quarterback and three forced fumbles on the season. Tillery has 30 tackles and eight quarterback hits.

The Sunday night contest in L.A. is an important one for both teams. The Chargers (5-4) are tied in the loss column of the AFC West with the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders. The Steelers (5-3-1) are looking up at the Baltimore Ravens in the packed-together AFC North.

The Steelers put Minkah Fitzpatrick on the COVID list Monday and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger missed Week 10 on the list and has yet to be cleared to come off.

Report: Chargers’ Joey Bosa fined nearly $29K for outburst

Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa received a $28,917 fine from the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct toward officials during Monday’s 28-14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Per the NFL Network on Saturday, the fine stems solely from Bosa’s on-field confrontation with officials late in the fourth quarter.

The three-time Pro Bowl selection took issue with what he deemed to be a missed holding call. His subsequent outburst resulted in a 15-yard penalty and first down.

Bosa, 26, didn’t hold back with his comments after the game.

“I didn’t even know they called the (expletive) penalty on me because I was fuming,” Bosa told reporters Monday. “But, I mean, refs are blind, simple. I’m sorry, but you’re blind, like open your eyes and do your job. It’s so bad it’s unbelievable.”

Bosa didn’t stop there.

“Fifteen yards, it’s a big deal,” he said. “Obviously that’s on me. I should never lose my temper like that, but these guys have got to do a better job because it’s been years of terrible missed calls left and right. It’s really pathetic, honestly, but pathetic on me too for doing what I did. Call or not, I have to take a step back and just go to the next play, but, man, they seem not to have their eyes open half the time.”
