Report: Titans agree to deal with K Joey Slye

The Tennessee Titans are signing veteran kicker Joey Slye, NFL Network reported Monday.

Contract terms were not disclosed.

Slye kicked for the New England Patriots last season and made 26 of his 33 field-goal attempts, including a career-long 63-yarder. His 78.8 percentage was the lowest of his career since his rookie season in 2019 with the Carolina Panthers.

He also has played for the Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders.

In 95 career games, Slye has connected on 81.7 percent of his field goals (147 of 180) and 89.6 percent of his PATs, including a career-high 96.2 percent last season.

Slye, 28, would replace Nick Folk, who led the NFL in kicking percentage on field goals the past two seasons but can’t provide the distance that Slye can. The 40-year-old Folk is a free agent.

Jones, 29, had 34 catches for 321 yards and two touchdowns in nine games (seven starts) last season.

He totaled 287 receptions for 3,028 yards and 18 touchdowns in 104 career games (67 starts) with the Buffalo Bills, Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and Jaguars.

Report: Washington signs K Brian Johnson

The Washington Football Team signed kicker Brian Johnson from the Chicago Bears’ practice squad Tuesday in the wake of Joey Slye’s hamstring injury, NFL Network reported.

Johnson will be the team’s fourth kicker this season.

Slye was injured trying to chase down Seattle defensive end Rasheem Green after a blocked extra point in the second quarter of Washington’s 17-15 win on Monday night. Green scored for two points while Slye came up lame. He was able to kick off but did not return in the second half, forcing Washington to eschew field goal attempts.

Washington coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday that Slye likely will miss three games, suggesting he’s headed for injured reserve.

Dustin Hopkins opened the season as the starting kicker for Washington, lasting six games. Chris Blewitt kicked in two games before the team signed Slye on Nov. 9.

Johnson, 22, kicked in four games for New Orleans this season, making all eight field goal attempts but missing three of eight PATs.

Slye has made 65 of 81 field-goal attempts and 73 of 83 extra-point attempts in 35 career games with the Carolina Panthers, Texans and 49ers.

Blewitt, 26, signed with Washington on Oct. 20. He saw three of his five field-goal attempts blocked in two games with the team. He made two of those kicks and both extra-point tries.

49ers waive kicker Joey Slye

The San Francisco 49ers waived kicker Joey Slye on Tuesday.

The 49ers are expected to open the practice window for Robbie Gould this week. Gould was put on short-term injured reserve with a groin injury last month.

Slye signed with San Francisco on Oct. 6 and kicked in three games. He made 7 of 8 field goal tries and converted 2 of 4 extra points.

Gould, 38, suffered a groin injury in pregame warmups ahead of the 49ers’ Week 4 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. In his absence, punter Mitch Wishnowsky stepped in and missed a 41-yard field goal and an extra point.

Gould has missed three games. He had a fourth week to recover with the Week 6 bye. He’s in his fifth season with the Niners.

The Houston Texans cut Slye, 25, on Sept. 30. Slye made four of five field goals and converted seven of eight extra points in three games. He was released by the Carolina Panthers earlier this year after two seasons.

In other moves, the Nines released linebacker Tyrell Adams from the 53-man roster. They also released linebacker Nathan Gerry, running back Jacques Patrick and defensive lineman Eddie Yarbrough from their practice squad.

The 49ers (3-4) host the Arizona Cardinals (7-1) this week.

Texans cut K Joey Slye ahead of Ka’imi Fairbairn return

The Houston Texans cut kicker Joey Slye on Thursday, just one week after signing him from their practice squad.

The move comes ahead of the expected return of Ka’imi Fairbairn from injured reserve. Fairbairn had pulled a groin muscle while warming up for the final preseason game vs. Tampa Bay in August. The 27-year-old returned to practice this week after sitting out the minimum three games.

“I don’t think you’re going to put a player out there that can’t perform to the best of his abilities on any phases or role being asked,” said special teams coordinator Frank Ross regarding Fairbairn, according to the Houston Chronicle. “If he’s going to go out there and be our kicker on Sunday, he’s going to be ready to kick whatever his range is. If he can kick from 75 out, we’ll kick from 75 out.”

According to the report, Ross said Fairbairn “cut it loose” in Wednesday’s practice, swinging his leg at full strength, and was not sore afterward.

The 25-year-old Slye was elevated from Houston’s practice squad prior their first two games to handle kicking duties and was officially signed to the 53-man roster ahead of last Thursday’s 24-9 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Slye made four of five field goals and converted seven of extra points in three games. He was released by the Panthers late last month after two seasons.

The Texans (1-2) visit Buffalo (2-1) on Sunday.

Texans sign K Joey Slye, elevate QB Jeff Driskel

The Houston Texans signed kicker Joey Slye from their practice squad and officially elevated quarterback Jeff Driskel ahead of their Thursday night game vs. the Carolina Panthers.

The team also elevated wide receiver Chris Moore.

Rookie third-round pick Davis Mills will make his first career start in place of the injured Tyrod Taylor, who was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury suffered in a Week 2 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Driskel, 28, is 1-8 in nine career starts with the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos over three NFL seasons. He will be the backup to Mills when the Texans (1-1) host the Panthers (2-0).

Slye has made three of four field goals and converted all seven extra points in two games. He was released by the Panthers late last month. The Texans used up his two elevations from the practice squad, necessitating the signing.

Moore has 47 career catches for 511 yards and four touchdowns in five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.
