Reports: Dolphins, TE Jonnu Smith agree to 2-year, $10M deal

The Miami Dolphins and free agent tight end Jonnu Smith reached agreement on a two-year, $10 million contract, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

The deal reported by ESPN and NFL Network can become official when the new league year opens on Wednesday.

Smith, 28, played for the Atlanta Falcons last season and caught 50 passes for 582 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games (six starts).

He has recorded 219 receptions for 2,423 yards and 20 TDs in 107 games (78 starts) with the Tennessee Titans (2017-20), New England Patriots (2021-22) and Falcons. Tennessee drafted him in the third round in 2017.

The Dolphins failed to develop a productive replacement after losing Mike Gesicki to the Patriots in free agency last March. Durham Smythe led Miami’s tight ends with 35 catches for 366 yards and no touchdowns in 2023.

Falcons release TE Jonnu Smith

The Atlanta Falcons released tight end Jonnu Smith on Tuesday, less than one year after trading for him.

Smith, 28, set career-high totals in catches (50) and receiving yards (582) to go along with three touchdowns in 17 games (six starts) last season. He was acquired by Atlanta on March 13, 2023, from the New England Patriots in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Falcons will save $6.5 million in cap space with the release of Smith, who had one year remaining on his contract.

“Thankful to have had the opportunity to be apart of an amazing organization,” Smith wrote on Twitter. “This season will be one of the most memorable years during my career for many great reasons on and off the field. Special locker room and special people all throughout the building.”

Reports: Patriots trading TE Jonnu Smith to Falcons

The New England Patriots are trading tight end Jonnu Smith to the Atlanta Falcons, a move that will free about $4.4 million in cap space, multiple outlets reported Monday.

The Patriots will get a seventh-round pick in return, per the reports, though it’s unclear if that’s in this year’s draft.

The trade will be processed at the start of the new league year, which begins Wednesday.

Smith, 27, caught 27 passes for 245 yards in 14 games (eight starts) for the Pats in 2022. He has 169 catches for 1,841 yards and 17 touchdowns in 90 career games (72 starts) for the Tennessee Titans (2017-20) and Patriots.

Smith will pair up with Pro Bowl TE Kyle Pitts in Atlanta. The Falcons are expected to restructure Smith’s contract.

Pats rework Jonnu Smith’s deal, clear $5.31M in cap space

The New England Patriots reworked tight end Jonnu Smith’s contract to clear cap space, ESPN reported Friday.

By converting $7.965 million of his base salary into a bonus, the team created $5.31 million in 2022 in cap space.

The Patriots signed Smith in March 2021 to a four-year, $50 million deal with $31.25 million fully guaranteed.

Before the move, New England was about $1.5 million over the 2022 salary cap, according to Overthecap.com.

Smith, 27, caught 28 passes for 294 yards and one touchdown in 16 games (11 starts) with the Pats in 2021.

He has 142 receptions for 1,596 yards and 17 scores in 76 games (64 starts) with the Tennessee Titans (2017-20) and New England.

The Patriots open the season at Miami on Sept. 11.

Reports: Patriots TE Henry (shoulder) to have MRI

New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry will undergo an MRI on his ailing shoulder, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

Henry, 26, injured his shoulder during Sunday’s practice. ESPN reported the injury “doesn’t appear serious,” although it is painful and could force Henry to miss playing time in the preseason.

Henry signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Patriots in the offseason. New England also added fellow tight end Jonnu Smith on a four-year, $50 million deal.

Henry played last season on the franchise tag with the Los Angeles Chargers, his fifth season with the franchise.

Henry caught 60 passes for 613 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games last season.

By comparison, the Patriots had 18 receptions for 254 yards and one TD from the tight end position last season.

Agent: TE Jonnu Smith reaches 4-year, $50M deal with Patriots

Former Tennessee Titans tight end Jonnu Smith agreed to a four-year, $50 million contract that includes $31.25 million fully guaranteed, his agent Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN on Monday.

Smith, 25, flourished last season with the Titans, recording career highs in receptions (41), receiving yards (448) and touchdown catches (eight). His touchdown reception total ranked fourth in the NFL among tight ends.

Smith has 114 receptions for 1,302 yards with 16 touchdowns in 60 career games with the Titans, who selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Patriots squeezed very little out of their tight ends in the passing game last season. Ryan Izzo recorded 13 receptions for 199 yards, Devin Asiasi had two catches for 39 yards and a touchdown and Dalton Keene added three grabs for 16 yards.
