Jawhar Jordan runs wild as No. 18 Louisville blanks No. 20 Duke

Jawhar Jordan scored on two first-quarter touchdown runs and compiled a career-high 163 yards on the ground as No. 18 Louisville handled No. 20 Duke for a 23-0 home victory in Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday.

Louisville (7-1, 4-1 ACC) bounced back from a loss at Pittsburgh two weeks earlier, followed by an open week.

Duke (5-3, 2-2) has lost two games in a row, both on the road against nationally ranked opponents. The Blue Devils led No. 4 Florida State in the fourth quarter a week earlier, but this one wasn’t that tight.

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard, who left the Florida State game with another ankle injury, was in the starter’s role but he didn’t generate much offense. He has been ailing for about a month, including missing the entire victory against North Carolina State.

The Blue Devils made it into Louisville territory three times, but never threatened to score. They punted seven times.

It marked Louisville’s second shutout of the season. The other came against Murray State.

Jordan had scoring runs of 14 and 23 yards. Louisville quarterback Jack Plummer was 11-for-16 passing for 117 yards.

Leonard completed 9 of 23 passes for 121 yards with an interception. Jordan Moore had 92 yards on six catches.

Louisville ended the third quarter with a 335-107 advantage in total offense. The final tally was a 351-202 edge.

The Cardinals took a 17-0 lead at halftime after Brock Travelstead’s 47-yard field goal with 49 seconds left in the first half.

Travelstead added a 20-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. That marked the second 72-yard scoring drive of the game for the Cardinals, who scored their first points at the end of a 10-play march in the first quarter.

Travelstead’s 24-yarder extended the lead to 23-0 later in the third quarter. That was set up following Gilbert Frierson’s interception of Leonard that gave the Cardinals the ball at the Duke 15-yard line.

Saints DE Cam Jordan signs two-year, $27.5M extension

Saints defensive end Cam Jordan signed a two-year contract worth a reported $27.5 million to keep him in New Orleans through the 2025 season.

Jordan, a first-round pick in 2011, has spent his entire career in New Orleans and wanted to sign a deal that would lead him into retirement with the franchise.

An eight-time Pro Bowl selection said Friday he wanted to continue playing to make sure his kids had vivid memories of his football career. Jordan also flew his father in for the morning press conference to celebrate the new deal.

“I know one mode and that’s to go as hard as I can,” Jordan said Friday. “It’s just this innate ability to wake up and want to go get it.”

Jordan, 34, is the franchise leader in sacks with 115.5 and has an active streak of 11 consecutive seasons with at least 7.5 sacks. He had 8.5 sacks in 2022.

“I couldn’t see myself being anywhere but the New Orleans Saints,” Jordan said.

Jordan’s father is former Vikings tight end Steve Jordan, who played 13 seasons in the NFL. This will be Cam Jordan’s 13th season.

Saints’ Cameron Jordan, Bengals’ Jessie Bates III fined

The NFL apparently didn’t take too kindly to a pair of players allegedly attempting to fake injuries during their Week 13 games.

Multiple media outlets reported Saturday that the league fined the New Orleans Saints $350,000, head coach Dennis Allen $100,000 and defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen and defensive end Cameron Jordan $50,000 for their respective roles during a delay in Monday’s 17-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The NFL also docked Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates III $50,000 for allegedly faking an injury during his team’s 27-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Per ESPN, all parties will appeal their fines.

Jordan, 33, opted to take a knee and pointed to his lower leg to force a stoppage in play midway into the fourth quarter. The stoppage came as the Buccaneers appeared poised to run an offensive play on fourth down. Tampa Bay, instead, elected to punt once play resumed.

Jordan vented on social media Saturday after receiving his fine.

“Are fines made by nfl open to public? I just feel like this should be public knowledge. ‘Cause some of the fines are silly but this 1… ridiculous. Anyways & for what a “deliberate action to delay game” before a (team) punts?”

Bates, 25, was spotted falling to the ground without contact as two Bengals defenders rushed onto the field while the Chiefs came to the line of scrimmage. Bates missed one snap before returning to action.

The fines come one week after the NFL sent all 32 clubs a memo that emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of the game. The memo also listed the minimum fines of $350,000 for clubs, $100,000 for a head coach, and $50,000 for players/assistant coaches for violating the rule.

Former NFL lineman, College Hall of Famer Shelby Jordan dies at 70

Former NFL offensive lineman and College Football Hall of Famer Shelby Jordan passed away on Sept. 9. He was 70.

Prior to his NFL career, Jordan was a college star for Division III Washington University in St. Louis. He excelled as a linebacker for Washington University from 1969-72 and was team captain and team MVP.

Jordan was a seventh-round pick in the 1973 draft by the Houston Oilers but never played for the team due to a dispute over contract negotiations.

Saints corral Panthers, keep playoff hopes alive

The New Orleans finally scored a touchdown on Alvin Kamara’s fourth-quarter reception and they held on to defeat the visiting Carolina Panthers 18-10 on Sunday.

Brett Maher kicked four field goals to push the Saints into the lead by early in the third quarter.

It was mostly defense that boosted the Saints (8-8), who needed to win in order to keep their postseason hopes alive. New Orleans had seven sacks with 3.5 coming from Cameron Jordan.

The Panthers (5-11), who didn’t score in the second half, have lost six games in a row.

Carolina had a 10-play drive in the works into the final minute until J.C. Gardner-Johnson intercepted Sam Darnold near midfield to end the threat to seal the outcome.

Taysom Hill threw the 12-yard touchdown pass to Kamara and finished with 222 passing yards on 17 of 28 accuracy. He also led the Saints with 45 rushing yards. Marquez Callaway made six catches for 97 yards.

It was the home finale for the Saints, who won for the third time in their last four games. They finish the regular season next week at Atlanta.

Darnold threw for 132 yards on 17-of-26 passing for Carolina. Chuba Hubbard gained 55 rushing yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.

Darnold made his first start since going out with a shoulder injury at midseason. Cam Newton was the starter the past five games, all losses for the Panthers.

The Saints, who didn’t commit a turnover, limited the Panthers to 178 yards of total offense. Maher had field goals from 41, 27, 41 and 33 yards. Lirim Hajrullahu made a 32-yard field goal for the
Panthers to open the scoring, but he missed from 47 yards out with a chance to give Carolina the lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers were ahead 10-3 after Hubbard’s 21-yard scoring run early in the second quarter.

Carolina beat the Saints 26-7 in the second week of the season.
