Report: Bills QB Josh Allen (shoulder) facing more tests

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will reportedly have more tests on his right shoulder Monday.

Early indications, however, are that Allen does not have a major injury, according to NFL Network.

He briefly visited the medical tent late in the first half of Sunday night’s 14-9 win against the New York Giants.

Allen completed 19 of 30 passes for 169 yards with two touchdowns and one interception against the Giants.

Allen, 27, is completing a league-high 71.7 percent of his passes for 1,576 yards, 13 TDs and six picks through six starts for the Bills (4-2). He has also rushed for 131 yards and three scores.

Josh Allen says no hard feelings after intense Bills practice

After a fiery Buffalo Bills practice Tuesday that included multiple fights and one player swinging their helmet, quarterback Josh Allen characterized the intensity as an example of the team’s will to win.

Allen put himself in the fray at least once, to chastise linebacker Tyrel Dodson for swinging his helmet after an altercation with tackle Spencer Brown. Other skirmishes included wide receiver Stefon Diggs with cornerback Siran Neal and Diggs again with cornerback Taron Johnson.

“We’re just working to compete and get better and we want to be great,” Allen said afterward. “Sometimes you go through practices like that where both sides want it really badly. Both sides are storming to the ball, just trying to make plays and you need those practices. That makes your team better.”

After Diggs threw a block on Johnson at one point, Johnson made his displeasure known with his arms spread wide. But the two were seen settling their differences after practice. The day concluded with Diggs catching a touchdown pass from Allen.

Head coach Sean McDermott stopped practice on at least one occasion to deliver a stern address to the team.

“I think all of our practices have had their moments,” Allen said. “This one may be the most constant. Again, it’s expected (and) and it’s … deserved.”

Allen insists there is no lingering animosity.

“I think it’s well understood on this team that everything that happens between the white lines stays within the white lines,” Allen said. “We love each other. This is a team that gets along extremely well. Our locker room is fantastic and we spend a lot of time outside of the facility together.

“At the same time, we’re grown men and we want to win. We don’t want to give the defense anything and the defense doesn’t want to give us anything. I’d be worried if it was the opposite, to be honest.”

The Bills were 13-3 last season and finished as AFC East champions for the third consecutive year, but they failed to reach the AFC Championship Game after a 27-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bills open their 2023 regular-season schedule Sept. 11 with a Monday night game on the road against the New York Jets.

Bills QB Josh Allen makes cover of Madden NFL 24

Bills quarterback Josh Allen achieved a childhood dream Wednesday when he was named the cover athlete for the Madden NFL 24 video game.

Allen, 27, is the first Buffalo player to appear on the cover and joins a club that includes fellow signal-callers Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.

“It’s such a small group of people who have ever touched the face of Madden, so now to be on that list, it’s very surreal. It’s very humbling,” Allen told ESPN. “To think about where I was not too long ago and coming out of high school with zero offers, going to junior college and have one offer, University of Wyoming of all places, and then fast-forward to now.

“I don’t know if I would have believed you at that point, if you were to tell me in high school. It’s so surreal. Madden has such a special place in my heart.”

Allen has guided the Bills to three straight AFC East division championships.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection finished second in the NFL MVP voting in 2020 and third in 2022.

The release date for Madden NFL 24 is Aug. 18.

Bills QB Josh Allen says elbow surgery not necessary

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen said he doesn’t expect to have offseason surgery on his right elbow.

He told reporters Monday that team doctors are hopeful that rest and recovery will be enough.

Allen’s season ended Sunday with a 27-10 home loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in an AFC divisional playoff game.

He originally injured his throwing elbow in a Week 9 loss to the New York Jets and was a regular on the injury list for the remainder of the season, although he never missed a start.

Allen completed 25 of 42 passes for 265 yards with no touchdowns and one interception against the Bengals.

He was 13-3 in the regular season, passing for 4,283 yards with 35 touchdowns and 14 interceptions as the Bills earned the AFC’s No. 2 seed.

Allen, 26, has thrown for 18,397 yards with 138 TDs and 60 picks in 77 games (76 starts) since Buffalo drafted him with the seventh overall pick in 2018.

Bills taking it by the hour with QB Josh Allen

Whether Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen plays this weekend against the Minnesota Vikings likely will be decided at the last minute.

Coach Sean McDermott said Friday that Allen is “hour-to-hour” with a right elbow injury. He has yet to participate in practice this week, including Friday, after sustaining the injury during the final drive of the Bills’ 20-17 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.

“We are in an hour-to-hour situation here to see how he progresses through the day,” McDermott said on WGR 550.

Former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum would draw the start should Allen be unable to play for the Bills (6-2).

While Allen’s availability is in question, McDermott ruled out safety Jordan Poyer and defensive end Greg Rousseau for the contest versus the Vikings (7-1). Poyer will miss his second consecutive game with an elbow injury, while Rousseau is considered week-to-week with a high ankle sprain.

The Bills’ injury report will be updated Friday afternoon.
