Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (back, knee) returns to practice

Reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson returned to practice with the Ravens on Friday following a two-day absence due to back and knee issues.

While his participation level in practice was not yet known, his return to the field is encouraging for his chances to play in Baltimore’s Week 9 home game against the Denver Broncos (5-3).

Should Jackson sit out on Sunday, however, the Ravens (5-3) would turn to 38-year-old Josh Johnson. Devin Leary is on the practice squad.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh is expected to speak to reporters after Friday’s practice.

Jackson, a two-time Most Valuable Player, was selected the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October. He was 86-of-128 passing (67.2 percent) for 1,241 yards, 12 touchdowns and one interception for a 126.5 passer rating. He also rushed for 193 yards in the month.

Jackson, 27, has completed 158 of 236 passes (66.9 percent) for 2,099 yards and 17 TDs with two interceptions in starting all eight games. He leads the league in average yards per attempt (9.95) and passer rating (115.4).

He also has rushed 81 times for 501 yards and two TDs.

The Ravens selected Jackson with the 32nd overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Louisville. He was voted NFL MVP in 2019 and last season, and he is a two-time first-team All-Pro and a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Jackson has passed for 17,986 yards and 142 TDs with 47 picks in 94 career regular-season games (85 starts). He also has 956 carries for 5,759 yards and 31 TDs.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (illness) misses first practice this season

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson did not participate in Thursday’s practice due to an illness, the first time this season he was unavailable.

Tyler Huntley and Josh Johnson stood in at quarterback in the absence of Jackson, who missed games in December each of the past two seasons due to injury.

The Ravens are otherwise fully healthy coming out of the bye week and face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

NFL Network reported Jackson should be ready for gameday.

Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman missed Wednesday’s practice due to illness but was back on the field Thursday afternoon.

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken said head coach John Harbaugh would have to share any information on the reason for Jackson’s absence.

Jackson, 26, has completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 2,618 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions in 12 games this season. The 2019 NFL MVP has rushed for 574 yards and five TDs for the Ravens (9-3), who have won six of seven games entering Sunday’s clash against the visiting Los Angeles Rams (6-6).

Huntley, Baltimore’s primary backup, posted a 2-2 record while replacing Jackson in 2022.

Ravens sign QB Josh Johnson

Josh Johnson returned for a third stint with the Baltimore Ravens and joined a five-man depth chart at quarterback.

Terms were not reported Monday.

Johnson, 37, has played for 14 NFL teams, which includes playing for the Ravens in 2016 and 2021.

Johnson played in the NFC Championship Game as an emergency substitute for injured San Francisco 49ers starter Brock Purdy but left that loss to the Philadelphia Eagles with a concussion.

Lamar Jackson signed a new contract and is entrenched as the starter for the Ravens, provided he’s healthy. Jackson has missed 10 games the past two seasons due to injury.

Baltimore signed undrafted free agent Nolan Harrison out of Delaware to join the roster following the 2023 draft.

They will compete with Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown for the primary backup role behind Jackson.

Johnson has played in 39 career games, with 2,280 yards passing, 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, Johnson previously played for the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos and 49ers.

Reports: Broncos releasing well-traveled QB Josh Johnson

Quarterback Josh Johnson will be released by the Denver Broncos — his 14th NFL team — multiple reports said Tuesday.

Brett Rypien is expected to serve as the backup to Russell Wilson.

Johnson had a steady preseason showing, however, completing 35 of 53 passes for 349 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He started the first two preseason games, handing off to Rypien in the third game.

The Broncos beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-13 on Saturday. Rypien was 14-of-21 passing for 137 yards and an interception.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Johnson, now 36, in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 36 games and is 1-8 as a starter. He has 2,270 career yards in the NFL, with 13 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions.

Johnson also has played in the USFL, XFL, AAF and UFL.

Ravens in a QB quandary as Tyler Huntley enters protocol

The Baltimore Ravens added quarterback Tyler Huntley to the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday, and he won’t play Sunday in a key AFC North clash with the Cincinnati Bengals, NFL Network reported.

Huntley missed Friday’s practice with what was termed a non-COVID illness, and the Ravens listed him as questionable — be he still was expected to start in place of the injured Lamar Jackson. A day later, all that changed when Huntley became the 11th Ravens player on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Now, either Jackson must return from his right ankle injury, or the Ravens will be forced to turn to veteran journeyman Josh Johnson as the starter. The Ravens signed Johnson from the New York Jets practice squad 10 days ago.

The Ravens’ haven’t ruled Jackson out, and he was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. He injured his ankle against the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 12 and hasn’t practiced since.

Johnson, 35, played in three games for the Jets, completing 29 of 45 pass attempts for 334 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The bulk of those stats came on Nov. 4, when Jackson replaced injured Jets starter Mike White in a 45-30 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

A fifth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, Johnson has started eight games (36 total appearances) and has a 1-7 record while seeing game action for the Bucs, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Washington and Jets. He played in the Alliance of American Football in 2019 before it folded and in the XFL in 2020 before it shut down due to the pandemic.

In his NFL career, Johnson has thrown for 1,966 yards with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Huntley started last week’s 31-30 loss to the Green Bay Packers when Jackson was sidelined, and he passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 73 yards and two scores.

Huntley is 86 of 125 (68.8 percent) for 743 yards, three touchdowns and one interception this season.

The winner of Sunday’s game will take over first place in the AFC North. Both the Bengals and Ravens are 8-6, with Baltimore having lost the past three games by a combined four points.

Ravens sign QB Josh Johnson off Jets’ practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens have signed journeyman quarterback Josh Johnson off the New York Jets’ practice squad as insurance to ailing starter Lamar Jackson.

The move was announced by Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who’s dealing with backup issues of his own.

Johnson, 35, is on Baltimore’s 53-man roster.

Jackson is dealing with a sprained ankle, though Ravens coach John Harbaugh said earlier this week they were expecting him to play Sunday against Green Bay. Tyler Huntley would get the start if Jackson is unable to go.

Johnson has appeared in three games for the Jets this season. He’s thrown for 334 yards with three touchdowns and an interception while completing 64.4 percent of his passes.

Jackson left last week’s game early in the second quarter after being taken down on a blitz from Cleveland linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP, did not return to the game after moving to the sideline under his own power and being carted to the locker room.

He left the stadium in a protective boot. An MRI confirmed Jackson did not suffer a high-ankle sprain.

The Ravens (8-5) still have a one-game lead over the Browns and Cincinnati Bengals (both 7-6) in the AFC North and are currently the No. 4 seed in the AFC. However, they next face a Packers team that comes into Baltimore with a 10-3 record.

Jets backup QB Mike White is on the reserve/COVID-19 list but is also dealing with a non-COVID illness. Joe Flacco will back up rookie starter Zach Johnson in Week 15 at Miami.

Reports: Jets QB Zach Wilson draws start in Week 12

The New York Jets have tabbed rookie Zach Wilson the starting quarterback this Sunday amid COVID-19 upending the quarterback room, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

Wilson has missed the past four games with a knee sprain but will be back under center against the Houston Texans.

Backup quarterback Mike White tested positive for COVID-19 and No. 3 signal caller Joe Flacco was deemed a close contact, resulting in both being place on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, per the reports.

Josh Johnson is being promoted from the practice squad to back up Wilson this Sunday.

Wilson cleared medical protocols on his knee on Monday, per the reports.

White played three games in place of Wilson while Flacco started last Sunday against Miami. Johnson came on for White in Week 9 against Indianapolis when White suffered an arm injury in the first quarter. Johnson threw for 317 yards and three TDs in the losing effort.

The Jets went 1-3 in Wilson’s absence. The Jets were 1-5 under Wilson before he was injured.

Wilson sprained his PCL in the Jets’ Week 7 loss against New England. Wilson is completing just 57.5 percent of his passes for 1,168 yards and four touchdowns against nine interceptions.

White led the Jets to just their second victory of the season, 34-31 over Cincinnati in Week 8. White threw for 405 yards, three touchdowns and two INTs.

The Jets and Texans are both 2-8.
