49ers QB Joshua Dobbs to start for Brock Purdy (elbow) vs. Cardinals

San Francisco will start Joshua Dobbs in place of injured quarterback Brock Purdy when the 49ers end their season on Sunday at the Arizona Cardinals.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced Wednesday that Dobbs will replace Purdy, who sustained a right elbow contusion with nerve inflammation in Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions.

Shanahan said both Dobbs and fellow quarterback Brandon Allen are ready to play.

“They’ve been two good guys to have there,” Shanahan said. “Kind of looked at both of them as our two throughout the year, but they’ve both given really good looks on scout team. They split all the reps there. They’re always ready. They both prepare like they’re going to be the starter every week. They’ve been great.”

San Francisco (6-10) is thin on the offensive line, so Dobbs’ mobility gave him the edge to start, Shanahan confirmed.

Dobbs, 29, made his first appearance for the 49ers on Monday night in relief of Purdy. Dobbs was 3-for-4 for 35 yards and also rushed once for 7-yard touchdown in the 40-34 loss to the visiting Lions.

Pittsburgh selected Dobbs in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee. He has passed for 2,955 career yards, 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 22 games (14 starts) for the Steelers (2018, 2020), Tennessee Titans (2022), Arizona Cardinals (2023), Minnesota Vikings (2023) and 49ers.

He also has rushed for 503 yards and seven touchdowns on 92 career carries. He is 3-11 as a starter.

If Purdy sits out against Arizona (7-9), he will finish his third NFL season with a 65.9 completion percentage (300 of 455) for 3,864 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The 49ers listed 11 players as non-participants on Wednesday, including Purdy, defensive end Nick Bosa (knee), tight end George Kittle (ankle/hamstring) and receiver Deebo Samuel (ribs/wrist).

Vikings sticking with Joshua Dobbs at QB this week

The Minnesota Vikings are sticking with Joshua Dobbs at starting quarterback for at least one more week.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell announced Wednesday that Dobbs will be under center on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

O’Connell had left the door open in the aftermath of Dobbs’ four interceptions thrown in the Vikings’ Week 12 loss to the Chicago Bears. Rookie Jaren Hall and Nick Mullens were options to supplant Dobbs.

“Feel great about our bye week process of two layers to it, evaluating where Josh has been as far as immediately providing a spark and helping us win two football games and then transitioning to some tough outcomes where there’s all kinds of things we can do better,” O’Connell told reporters Wednesday. “We could coach better, Josh’s continued comfort in our offense and how we play, but also our offense and our staff’s ability to evolve and help Josh thrive is our plan. We’re very confident in him.”

Dobbs has gone 1-2 as the starter for the Vikings since coming over from Arizona in a trade when Kirk Cousins was lost for the season with an Achilles injury. Dobbs went 1-7 in Arizona while Kyler Murray continued to rehab his surgically repaired knee.

Dobbs, 28, is completing 64 percent of his passes with the two teams, throwing for 2,401 yards and 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

At 6-6, the Vikings would make the playoffs if the season ended today by virtue of tiebreakers over the other .500 teams in the NFC.

But Sunday’s game at Las Vegas (5-7) is crucial, especially with the return of standout wide receiver Justin Jefferson. The Vikings have lost two straight.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray won’t play in Week 9

Kyler Murray’s season debut with the Arizona Cardinals is on hold for at least one more week.

Coach Jonathan Gannon already has announced that Joshua Dobbs will start at quarterback next Sunday against the Cleveland Browns for the lowly Cardinals (1-7).

Dobbs has started all eight games.

Murray hasn’t played since tearing the ACL in his right knee on Dec. 12, 2022, and, after surgery this year, has been on the PUP list. He was designated to return on Oct. 18, opening the 21-day window until Nov. 8 to add him to the 53-man roster.

Murray was not activated for Sunday’s 31-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

And with Gannon already ruling out Murray for Sunday’s game at Cleveland, the earliest Murray could play is on Nov. 12 at home against the Atlanta Falcons.

Murray, 26, signed a five-year, $230.5 million deal before the 2022 season. He is 25-31-1 as a starter, having thrown for 13,848 yards and 84 touchdowns against 41 interceptions. He also has 2,204 career rushing yards and 23 touchdowns.

Agent: QB Josh Dobbs signs with Browns

Quarterback Josh Dobbs signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns, his agent Mike McCartney said on social media Monday.

Dobbs, who has bounced around the NFL since 2018, will be a prime candidate to be the backup quarterback in Cleveland behind Deshaun Watson.

Dobbs, now 28, signed with the Cleveland Browns in April 2022 on a one-year, $1 million deal, but he was waived in November without having played a game for the team once Watson returned from a 11-game suspension.

In December 2022, with Ryan Tannehill injured, the Tennessee Titans signed Dobbs off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad and had him start the final two games of the season — the first two starts of Dobbs’ NFL career. Dobbs went 40-for-68 passing for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in those games.

After being drafted in the fourth round in 2017 by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dobbs saw action in five games in 2018 and one in 2020. Pittsburgh traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of the 2019 season and claimed him off waivers from Jacksonville before 2020.

Kellen Mond is the only other quarterback on the Browns’ roster behind Watson.

Reports: Titans QB Joshua Dobbs to start vs. Cowboys

Tennessee Titans quarterback Joshua Dobbs will make his first career NFL start in Thursday’s game against the visiting Dallas Cowboys, multiple media outlets reported.

Dobbs reportedly is getting the nod over rookie Malik Willis for Tennessee, which is without starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill due to an ankle injury.

As for the Cowboys (11-4), NFL Network reported running back Tony Pollard is expected to be inactive for Thursday’s contest. Pollard has been unable to participate in practice all week due to a thigh injury.

The Titans (7-8) can improve their record but risk injury while gaining no ground in playoff positioning until the Jan. 8 winner-take-all AFC South showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Even if the Jaguars beat the Houston Texans on Sunday to improve to 8-8, and should Tennessee lose Thursday, the division title would still be on the line when the teams meet head-to-head.

Dobbs, 27, was signed by the Titans off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad on Dec. 21. He began the season with the Cleveland Browns, who parted ways with him after Deshaun Watson joined the roster following his 11-game suspension.

He appeared in six games with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2018 and 2020 seasons, completing 10 of 17 passes for 45 yards with one interception.

Dobbs returns to the state where he played in college at Tennessee from 2013-16 and threw for more than 7,000 yards.

Willis, 23, completed just 14 of 23 passes for 99 yards and two interceptions in Tennessee’s 19-14 loss to the Houston Texans last Saturday. He is completing just 50.8 percent of his passes for 276 yards with three picks in eight games this season.

Pollard, 25, sits 12 rushing yards shy of 1,000 for the season. Teammate Ezekiel Elliott has 829 yards and 11 touchdowns, including scores in eight consecutive games.

Pollard has a team-leading 12 total touchdowns (nine rushing, three receiving). The 2022 Pro Bowl selection was limited to nine carries for 19 yards last week, when the Cowboys rallied to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, and McCarthy said Malik Davis would see more reps in this week’s prep sessions.

Davis has 23 carries for 103 yards and one touchdown in 10 games this season.

Dallas is the top wild-card team in the NFC and maintains the slimmest hope of catching Philadelphia in the East division.

The Cowboys can win the NFC East if the Eagles lose their final two games and Dallas beats the Titans and Washington Commanders. Philadelphia (13-2) locks up the division and home-field advantage throughout conference playoffs with a victory Sunday against the New Orleans Saints (6-9).

Ex-Browns QB Joshua Dobbs works out for Broncos

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Joshua Dobbs worked out for the Denver Broncos on Friday.

The Browns released Dobbs on Monday after activating Deshaun Watson from the suspended list.

Dobbs, 27, was a fourth-round pick by Pittsburgh in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He appeared in a total of six games for the Steelers in the 2018 and 2020 seasons, completing 10 of 17 passes for 45 yards with one interception. Dobbs also rushed six times for 31 yards.

Cleveland reportedly is hoping to re-sign Dobbs to the practice squad.

Browns release QB Josh Rosen

The Cleveland Browns released backup quarterback Josh Rosen on Tuesday as they trimmed their roster to 53 players.

The No. 10 overall draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2018, Rosen signed with Cleveland last month. His release means the Browns will start the season with Joshua Dobbs as the backup to Jacoby Brissett.

Rosen was 17-of-33 passing for 186 yards and no scores in the preseason. Dobbs finished 35 of 53 for 338 yards and two touchdowns.

The Browns are turning to the veteran Brissett to start at least the first 11 games while Deshaun Watson serves his NFL suspension for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy.

Also Tuesday, the Browns officially placed Watson on the reserve/suspended list. He is eligible to play again in Week 13 against his former team, the Houston Texans, on Dec. 4. He will be allowed to return to the team facility on Oct. 10.

Rosen was traded to the Miami Dolphins following Arizona’s selection of Kyler Murray in the 2019 draft, and he since has been with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons.

The 25-year-old has thrown for 2,864 yards with 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 24 career games (16 starts). He is 3-13 as a starter.

The Browns open the season on Sept. 11 at the Carolina Panthers and will face their former starting quarterback, Baker Mayfield.
