Texans claim S Kareem Jackson off waivers from Broncos

Veteran safety Kareem Jackson was claimed off waivers Tuesday by the Houston Texans, the team where he spent the first nine seasons of his career.

Houston also placed safety Jimmie Ward on injured reserve. Ward hurt his quadriceps in Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns.

The Texans drafted Jackson in the first round of the 2010 draft as a cornerback. He became a safety when he joined the Denver Broncos in 2019.

But Jackson’s troubled tenure in Denver came to an end Monday when the team released him. Jackson has served two suspensions totaling six games this season due to hits deemed unnecessary roughness by the NFL. His second suspension concluded last week.

Jackson drew a two-game suspension for a hit to the head of Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave on Oct. 22. He later was suspended for four games, one day after a high blow to Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs on Nov. 19.

Overall, Jackson has been fined a total of $89,670 this season for four illegal hits. He also has lost more than $838,000 in missed game checks.

Jackson, 35, has 952 tackles and 22 career interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. He also has seven fumble recoveries, one returned for a score.

In eight games this season, Jackson recorded 51 tackles and two interceptions.

Jackson overlapped for two seasons in Houston with linebacker DeMeco Ryans — now the franchise’s head coach, and on the verge of taking the Texans (8-7) to the playoffs in his first season on the job.

Ward has 50 tackles and one interception in 10 games this season, his first with the Texans after nine seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL suspends Broncos S Kareem Jackson 4 games

Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson returned from a two-game suspension, only to be suspended again on Monday for repeated violations of player safety rules after an incident in Sunday’s 21-20 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

The NFL announced that Jackson is suspended four games without pay for his hit on Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs. NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan issued the suspension and detailed the violation in a letter to Jackson, who had just served the two-game suspension that had been reduced from four upon appeal.

“With 13:38 remaining in the first quarter, you were involved in a play that the League considers a serious violation of the playing rules,” Runyan wrote in the letter. “The video of the play shows that you lowered your head and made forcible contact to Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs. You had an unobstructed path to your opponent and the illegal contact could have been avoided.

“Illegal acts that are flagrant and jeopardize the safety of players will not be tolerated. The League will continue to stress enforcement of the rules that prohibit using your helmet to make forcible contact with your opponent. On the play in question, you lowered your head and delivered a forceful blow to the shoulder and head/neck area of an opponent when you had time and space to avoid such contact. You could have made contact with your opponent within the rules, yet you chose not to.”

Jackson was not penalized on the play. He will appeal his latest suspension, ESPN reported Monday night. He is otherwise eligible to return to the active roster after the Week 15 game against the Detroit Lions on Dec. 17.

Jackson was ejected for the second time this season after hitting Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave on the sideline in Denver’s 19-17 victory on Oct. 22. He missed an Oct. 29 home victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and a Nov. 13 win at the Buffalo Bills. In between, Denver had a bye in Week 9.

Jackson had already been fined four times this season, forfeiting a total of $89,670. Missing two games cost him another $279,000 in salary.

He was also ejected back in Week 2 after he laid a massive hit on Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas, who came away with a concussion on the play.

Jackson, 35, had nine total tackles against the Vikings and has 51 tackles, two interceptions and three passes defended in eight games (all starts) this season.

Jackson is in his 14th season in the NFL and his fifth with Denver after nine with the Houston Texans. He has 952 tackles and 22 career interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. He also has seven fumble recoveries, one returned for a score.

Broncos activate S Kareem Jackson from reserve/suspended list

The Denver Broncos activated safety Kareem Jackson on Tuesday, his first day of eligibility to come off the reserve/suspended list after a two-game suspension.

The NFL disciplined Jackson for frequent unnecessary roughness penalties, reducing the punishment from the initial four games to two. He missed the Oct. 29 home victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and Monday night’s win at the Buffalo Bills. Denver had a bye in Week 9.

In a corresponding move, Denver waived rookie nose tackle Keondre Coburn, 23, who appeared in one game. The Broncos (4-5) also released cornerback Reese Taylor, 24, from the practice squad.

Jackson was ejected for the second time this season on Oct. 22 after hitting Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave on the sideline in Denver’s 19-17 victory.

Jackson has already been fined four times this season, forfeiting a total of $89,670. Missing two games cost him another $279,000 in salary.

His first ejection came in Week 2 after he laid a massive hit on Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas, who came away with a concussion on the play.

Broncos S Kareem Jackson’s suspension reduced to 2 games

Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson’s four-game suspension was cut in half on Tuesday following his appeal to the NFL.

The league had suspended Jackson on Monday following frequent unnecessary roughness penalties. Hearing officer Derrick Brooks, appointed by both the NFL and the NFLPA, reduced the punishment to two games.

Jackson is eligible to rejoin Denver’s roster on Nov. 14, in time for the Broncos (2-5) hosting the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 19. He will miss Sunday’s home game against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Nov. 13 contest at the Buffalo Bills. Denver has a bye in Week 9.

Jackson was ejected for the second time this season this past Sunday after hitting Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave on the sideline in Denver’s 19-17 victory.

“On the play in question, you delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of a defenseless receiver, when you had the time and space to avoid such contact,” NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan wrote in a letter to Jackson. “You could have made contact with your opponent within the rules, yet you chose not to.”

Jackson has already been fined four times this season, forfeiting a total of $89,670.

His first ejection came in Week 2 after he laid a massive hit on Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas. Thomas suffered a concussion on the play.

Jackson, 35, is in his 14th season in the NFL and his fifth with Denver after nine with the Houston Texans. He has 22 career interceptions, returning three for touchdowns.

Broncos S Kareem Jackson suspended four games for illegal hits

The NFL suspended Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson on Monday for repeated unnecessary roughness penalties.

Jackson is appealing the discipline, according to multiple reports.

Jackson was ejected for the second time this season on Sunday after hitting Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave on the sideline.

“On the play in question, you delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of a defenseless receiver, when you had the time and space to avoid such contact,” vice president of football operations Jon Runyan wrote in a letter to Jackson. “You could have made contact with your opponent within the rules, yet you chose not to.”

Jackson has already been fined four times this season, forfeiting a total of $89,670.

His first ejection came in Week 2 after he laid a massive hit on Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas’ head. Thomas suffered a concussion on the play.

If Jackson’s appeal is denied, the four games he will miss will come against the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns. He would be allowed to return to the active roster on Nov. 27.

Broncos coach Sean Payton understood the reason for the discipline while insisting Jackson wants to play within the rules.

“I’ve sat on this committee — the (NFL) Competition Committee — for a number of years,” Payton said. “We’re constantly trying to work with and educate the players. There are times when pad levels drop. I know Kareem, I know his heart and I know the way he’s played. I think it’s an easy narrative to say, ‘Well he’s just an old-timer playing in a new-timer’s game.’ When you see the play, his head is removed from the forceable contact. Defenseless is a little bit more of an issue relative to the position the receiver’s in.

“I just know where he’s at as a player. We’ll keep working on that. I know he’ll keep working on it. He’s someone that’s smart and really wants to do the right thing. It’s one of the toughest parts of our game for the officials, for the players, for all of us involved of getting that to where it’s clear and easy. Sometimes, it’s just not.”

Jackson, 35, is playing his 14th season in the NFL and his fifth with Denver after nine years with the Houston Texans. He has 22 career interceptions, returning three for touchdowns.

Jackson has 42 tackles, two interceptions and three pass breakups this season.

NFL fines Broncos S Kareem Jackson — again

The NFL fined Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson $43,709 for unnecessary roughness during the team’s Week 6 defeat against Kansas City.

This marks the fourth fine in Jackson’s six games this season and the biggest amount to date.

Jackson was not penalized for the hit during the Thursday Night Football game, but the league ruled it deserving of a fine.

In Week 2, Jackson’s illegal hit resulted in his ejection from the game. He also was fined in weeks one and three.

Jackson, 35, was a first-round pick (No. 20 overall) of the Houston Texans in 2010 out of Alabama.
