Reports: Commanders sign former Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman

Quarterbacks Sam Hartman, Kedon Slovis and John Rhys Plumlee were among the free agents who agreed to contracts this weekend following the NFL Draft, according to multiple media and team reports.

Hartman, who starred at Notre Dame after a five-year tenure at Wake Forest, will receive a $20,000 signing bonus and a $225,000 base salary guarantee from the Washington Commanders, NFL Network reported.

Slovis, who played at Southern California, Pittsburgh and then BYU, is signing with the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL Network reported.

Plumlee played at Ole Miss and then UCF, could be projected as a wide receiver in the NFL, and agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced.

Other quarterbacks who agreed to terms, according to NFL Network reporting, are Louisville’s Jack Plummer (Carolina Panthers) and Western Kentucky’s Austin Reed (Chicago Bears).

The Las Vegas Raiders announced they are signing former South Alabama QB Carter Bradley, son of longtime NFL coach Gus Bradley.

The Commanders also are signing Southern California running back Austin Jones, according to his agency, which will reunite him with former Trojans assistant coach Kliff Kingsbury, now Washington’s offensive coordinator.

Players following in their father’s footsteps include former FAU and Missouri State wide receiver Terique Owens, son of former NFL flanker Terrell Owens, signing with the San Francisco 49ers, according to Terrell Owens and multiple media reports.

Former Southern Miss running back Frank Gore Jr., son of the former NFL great at the same position, is signing with the Buffalo Bills, the NFL Network reported.

The Denver Broncos have committed a $25,000 signing bonus and $250,000 salary guarantee to former Memphis and Old Dominion running back Blake Watson, the NFL Network reported.

After Michigan had 13 players selected from the national championship team in the draft, four more former Wolverines are signing as free agents, ESPN reported. Defensive lineman Braiden McGregor (New York Jets), defensive back Josh Wallace (Los Angeles Rams), offensive lineman Drake Nugent (49ers) and offensive lineman Karsen Barnhart, who will be with his former coach Jim Harbaugh, the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

QB Kedon Slovis announces transfer to BYU

Quarterback Kedon Slovis is transferring to BYU for the 2023 season, he announced Saturday.

Slovis, who started his career at Southern California, played the 2022 season at Pitt for coach Pat Narduzzi.

“I will always be grateful for Coach Narduzzi and the time I got to spend with all of my teammates at the University of Pittsburgh,” Slovis tweeted. “I’m excited for this new chapter and can’t wait to get to work. #GoCougs”

Slovis entered the transfer portal on Dec. 5, the same day former Notre Dame and Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec announced his transfer to Pitt, his hometown school.

In 2022, Slovis completed 58.4 percent of his passes for 2,397 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 games this season for the Panthers (8-4). Pitt will meet UCLA in the Sun Bowl on Friday.

Slovis has passed for 9,973 yards with 68 touchdowns and 33 interceptions in 32 games with the Trojans (2019-21) and Panthers. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was the 2019 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and a 2020 first-team All-Pac-12 selection at USC.

Kedon Slovis to start at QB for Pitt

Kedon Slovis will start at quarterback for Pitt when the No. 17 Panthers open the season against rival West Virginia on Sept. 1.

The Southern California transfer beat out Nick Patti, who backed up starter Kenny Pickett last fall. Pickett was a first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in April.

Coach Pat Narduzzi said Wednesday that he and his staff considered the “whole body of work” from summer camp.

“We’ve looked at every tiny, little detail of every statistic, from third down, red zone, team,” Narduzzi told reporters. “It was not an easy decision.

“They both have a high IQ at that position. Both of them can lead our football team into an ACC schedule. We have confidence in both of them. Unfortunately, at the quarterback position, there’s one guy. It becomes a one-man show.”

Slovis entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this winter after three seasons under center for USC.

In 27 career games, Slovis has thrown for 7,576 passing yards, 58 touchdowns and 24 interceptions on 68.4 percent passing. His stats have ticked down each year after an impressive freshman campaign in 2019, when he threw for 30 TDs against just nine picks in 12 starts.

The Trojans overhauled their program with the hire of coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, who was able to flip Class of 2023 five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson from the Sooners to USC. Oklahoma starter Caleb Williams also followed Riley, narrowing the opportunities for Slovis.

Slovis ended the 2021 season with a lower leg injury, finishing the year with 2,153 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

USC QB Kedon Slovis transfers to Pitt

Southern Cal quarterback Kedon Slovis announced on Instagram Tuesday that he will transfer to Pitt.

Slovis entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this winter after three seasons under center for the Trojans.

The Trojans are overhauling their program with the hire of coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, who was able to flip Class of 2023 five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson from the Sooners to Southern Cal. The program also still has Jaxson Dart, who took over at quarterback when Slovis was injured during 2021.

Pitt is experiencing change, too, with Heisman Trophy finalist Kenny Pickett entering the 2022 NFL Draft. Pickett threw for 4,319 yards, 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season, leading Pitt to its first ACC championship.

Southern California junior quarterback Kedon Slovis has entered the transfer portal, multiple outlets reported Monday.

The move comes in the aftermath of Lincoln Riley being named the Trojans’ new coach last month.

Slovis joins a host of QBs who are in the portal for 2022 — Spencer Rattler, Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel, Adrian Martinez, Myles Brennan, Harrison Bailey, Max Johnson and Jack Plummer among them.

Class of 2023 5-star QB Malachi Nelson switched his verbal commitment from Oklahoma and will follow Riley to USC.

Reports: USC QB Jaxson Dart had surgery on meniscus

Southern Cal is down another quarterback.

Trojans true freshman quarterback Jaxson Dart underwent surgery to repair a meniscus injury and will miss “an extended period of time,” according to multiple reports Thursday.

Dart relieved starting quarterback Kedon Slovis last Saturday when Slovis injured his neck on USC’s first possession against Washington State. Dart set a program record for most passing yards in a debut — 391 — to go with four touchdowns and two interceptions as the Trojans won 45-14. He also led the team in rushing with 32 yards.

But Dart suffered a meniscus injury during the game, reportedly during the second quarter, and played through it.

Slovis returned to practice this week and is likely to resume No. 1 QB duties once healthy. Without Dart, the Trojans also have Miller Moss, a former Top 100 prospect.

USC (2-1, 1-1 Pac-12), which fired coach Clay Helton after a Week 2 loss to Stanford, hosts Oregon State on Saturday.
