Miami QB Cam Ward sets Div. I record for career passing TDs

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward became the all-time leader in Division I career touchdown passes during the first half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday.

Ward had three passing scores in the half and the first of them was a 4-yard touchdown to Jacolby George for the 156th of his career, allowing him to pass Houston’s Case Keenum (2007-11).

Ward also threw touchdown passes to Joshisa Trader and Elijah Arroyo in the first half as Miami led 31-28 over Iowa State in Orlando, Fla.

Ward began his college career at FCS Incarnate Word and threw 71 touchdown passes over two seasons. He then transferred to Washington State and tossed 48 scoring passes over the next two seasons.

He moved on for this lone season at Miami and he entered the game with a school-record 36 TD passes.

Ward could see his new record threatened next month. Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel has 153 career passing touchdown entering the College Football Playoff game against Ohio State on Jan. 1 in the Rose Bowl. Gabriel could have multiple games left in his season.

Texans QB C.J. Stroud (concussion) could miss game vs. Titans

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that rookie sensation quarterback C.J. Stroud was diagnosed with a concussion, stemming from a hit during Sunday’s 30-6 loss to the New York Jets.

Stroud was the recipient of a blow from New York defensive tackle Quinnen Williams after throwing a pass in the fourth quarter. His head snapped as he hit the ground.

“C.J. is still in the concussion protocol,” Ryans said. “We’ll see how he goes throughout the week and hopefully he continues to feel better.”

Ryans wasn’t optimistic that Stroud could play in this Sunday’s road game against the Tennessee Titans. He indicated the team will be cautious with Stroud, the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft.

“Yeah, we’ll see as he goes throughout the week, we’ll see how he progresses throughout the concussion protocol and that just has to run its course,” Ryans said. “I don’t think many guys have came back the following week after a concussion. You have to make sure at the end of the day that no matter the position, no matter who the guy is, you have to make sure that your guys are healthy and we’re protecting guys and their right when it comes to the concussion or the head injuries. We have to make sure we’re protecting all of our guys.

“It’s more about their long-term health, as opposed to, just everybody gets excited about the next game and the next opportunity, but we care about these guys as men off the field and making sure that their health is the utmost importance to us.”

Williams commented on social media to say there was no ill intent.

“I pray CJ is ok, everyone know I’m not a dirty player or trying to hurt a great, Elite QB like him or any player in the league,” Williams said. “I play hard and I play fair. Again I pray CJ is ok and wish him nothing but the best.”

Stroud, 22, leads the NFL with 3,631 yards despite throwing for a season-low 91 against the Jets. He has 20 scoring passes and been intercepted five times.

Davis Mills and Case Keenum are the starter options if Stroud isn’t available against the Titans. Mills, 25, was 1 of 5 for 4 yards after replacing Stroud against the Jets and has a 5-19-1 career record as a starter. Keenum, 35, is 29-35 as an NFL starter.

“We’ll see where we end up throughout the week,” Ryans said. “Both guys have played a lot of football, and at this point and where we are, we just want guys who are going to put us in a position to win football games. Who can we count on to help us win football games? And that’s how we’ll decide.”

Reports: Texans bring back QB Case Keenum on 2-year deal

The Houston Texans are reuniting with quarterback Case Keenum, signing the journeyman to a two-year contract worth $6.25 million, multiple reports said Monday.

The agreement reportedly includes $4 million guaranteed and can increase to $8.25 million with incentives.

The deal will not be official until Wednesday, the first day of the new league year.

Keenum, 35, is a Texas native who played collegiately at Houston before joining the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He spent the first two seasons of his 10-year NFL career with them, starting 10 games and throwing for 2,195 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight picks.

Keenum went on to find jobs as both a starter and a backup for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams (2015-16), Minnesota Vikings (2017), Denver Broncos (2018), Washington (2019) and Cleveland Browns (2020-21) before spending 2022 backing up Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills.

The Texans own the No. 2 pick in next month’s NFL draft and are widely expected to select a franchise quarterback of the future to join Keenum in the QB room.

Houston also reached an agreement with edge rusher Chase Winovich on a one-year, $2 million deal, NFL Network reported. Winovich tweeted a goodbye to his 2022 team, the Cleveland Browns. The soon-to-be 28-year-old has 12.0 sacks in 53 career games but just one over the past two seasons.

NFL transaction roundup: Panthers’ Donte Jackson agrees to 3-year deal

Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson agreed to terms on a three-year contract on Saturday.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the team, however NFL Network reported it was a $35.1 million deal.

Jackson, 26, recorded 61 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble in 12 games (all starts) last season. He missed the final five games due to a groin injury.

Jackson has 209 tackles, 12 interceptions and one sack in 55 career games (51 starts) since being selected by the Panthers in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

–Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and running back Boston Scott agreed to terms on one-year contracts.

The Eagles released Cox on Thursday in hopes of re-signing the six-time Pro Bowl selection to a reworked deal. Multiple reports said the two sides agreed on a $14 million deal.

Cox, 31, had 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks last season. He recorded 443 tackles, 142 quarterback hits, 58 sacks, 14 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries, and has scored three touchdowns in 156 career games (150 starts).

Scott, 26, had 87 carries for 373 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games last season. He has rushed for 992 yards and added 499 receiving yards for 14 total touchdowns (13 rushing, one receiving) in 43 career games with the Eagles.

–Atlanta Falcons hybrid offensive threat Cordarrelle Patterson agreed to terms on a contract, NFL Network reported.

Terms were not disclosed in the deal for the wide receiver-turned-running back, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2021.

Patterson, 31, recorded career-high totals in carries (153), rushing yards (618), rushing touchdowns (six), receiving yards (548) and receiving touchdowns (five). His 52 catches matched his career-high total, set in 2016 with the Minnesota Vikings.

Patterson has collected 1,635 rushing yards, 2,635 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns (14 rushing, 15 receiving, eight special teams) in 143 career games with the Vikings, then-Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Falcons. He was selected by Minnesota with the 29th overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

–Kicker Randy Bullock is returning to the Tennessee Titans.

The Tennessean reported Bullock is signing a two-year contract.

Bullock, 32, signed with the Titans last September after an injury to Sam Ficken. He hit 26 of 31 field goal attempts with a long of 51, and also converted 42 of 45 field extra-point tries.

Three of his field goals were game winners.

The Titans are Bullock’s sixth team. A fifth-round draft pick in 2012 by Houston, he also has spent time with the Texans, New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 123 career games, he has made 83.3 percent of his field goal tries (194 of 233) and 95.2 percent of extra points (194 of 233).

–Quarterback Garrett Gilbert agreed to terms with the Las Vegas Raiders, his agent announced.

Gilbert, 30, spent part of last season on the practice squad of the Patriots, working with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, now the Raiders head coach.

Originally a sixth-round draft pick in 2014, Gilbert has appeared in eight games through his career with Carolina, Cleveland, Dallas and Washington. He’s 0-2 as a starter and has completed 43 of 75 pass attempts for 477 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

–The Cleveland Browns are trading veteran quarterback Case Keenum to the Buffalo Bills for a 2022 seventh-round draft pick, NFL Network reported.

Keenum, 34, won both of his starts for Cleveland in 2021, completing 47 of 72 passes for 462 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

He is 29-35 as a starter with six NFL teams since 2013, passing for 14,876 yards with 78 TDs and 48 interceptions.

Browns’ Nick Mullens gets start as top 2 QBs remain in protocol

Pushing their game back two days didn’t help the Cleveland Browns quarterback situation after all.

Third-string quarterback Nick Mullens will start Monday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders as starter Baker Mayfield and backup Case Keenum could not clear COVID-19 protocols, per multiple reports.

The only player able to clear the protocols Monday was safety John Johnson, leaving the Browns with 22 still in the protocols, including three on the practice squad.

The Browns have three coaches sidelined in the protocols, including head coach Kevin Stefanski. Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer will serve as acting head coach and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will call plays if Stefanski remains out as expected.

The Browns learned Wednesday that Mayfield tested positive and landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. On Thursday, Keenum went on the COVID list after testing positive.

That leaves Mullens to start his 17th NFL game. All of Mullens’ starts came for the San Francisco 49ers from 2018-20. In 19 games overall, Mullens is completing 64.5 percent of his passes for 4,714 yards with 25 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

The game was scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The NFL moved the game to 5 p.m. ET Monday in an effort to give the Browns a chance to return some of their players to active duty.

However, the Browns still have the following impact players on the COVID list: tight end Austin Hooper, wide receiver Jarvis Landry, left tackle Jedrick Wills, kick returner JoJo Natson, Mayfield and Keenum, defensive tackle Malik McDowell, safeties Ronnie Harrison and Grant Delpit, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, right tackle James Hudson III and punter Jamie Gillan.

Running back Kareem Hunt and cornerback Troy Hill, both on the list, were expected to miss the game due to injury anyway.

It’s an enormous game for the Browns (7-6), who could vault to first place in the AFC North with a win or drop to last place in the division with a loss.

The Browns activated seven players from the practice squad as COVID-19 replacements: cornerbacks Brian Allen and Herb Miller, safeties Jovante Moffatt and Tedric Thompson, guard Hjalte Froholdt, defensive end Joe Jackson and running back John Kelly.

Oddsmakers move line, credit Browns +1 minus Baker Mayfield

Oddsmakers moved swiftly to react to the news that Case Keenum would start for the Cleveland Browns over Baker Mayfield on Thursday.

PointsBet was first to publicize the shift, crediting the Browns with a point off the spread against the Denver Broncos.

Cleveland moved from a 3-point underdog to +2 with Keenum in the lineup.

The Browns (3-3) face the Broncos (3-3) on a short week and without much of their established offensive weaponry. Running back Nick Chubb (calf) is out for the second game in a row and his primary backup, Kareem Hunt (calf), was placed on short-term IR.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is not expected to play for the Browns, who listed 20 players on the injury report to start the week.
