Backup QB Kellen Mond agrees to terms with Saints

The New Orleans Saints and quarterback Kellen Mond have agreed to contract terms.

The team announced the deal on Friday without any details of the length or financial value.

The Saints have been on the lookout for a backup QB this offseason after the departure of Jameis Winston to the Cleveland Browns as a free agent.

They previously signed journeyman Nathan Peterman and also have Jake Haener, a 2023 fourth-round pick, on board as a prospective understudy to Derek Carr.

The Minnesota Vikings selected Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

He spent his first season with the Vikings, was with the Cleveland Browns briefly in 2022 and spent much of 2023 on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad. He has appeared in one regular-season game, completing two passes for 5 yards at Green Bay in Week 17 of 2021.

Mond, 24, was a four-year starter at Texas A&M and threw for 9,661 yards, 71 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.

Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, two other QBs on COVID-19 list

The Minnesota Vikings placed quarterbacks Kirk Cousins, Kellen Mond and Nate Stanley on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Third-year player Jake Browning, who is fully vaccinated, is the lone Vikings quarterback available to practice. Browning has no NFL experience and was signed to a reserve/future contract in January.

Coach Mike Zimmer was none-too-pleased with those who have elected against getting vaccinated when addressing reporters on Monday.

“We could put this thing to bed if we’d all do this, but it is what it is,” Zimmer said.

Cousins has declined to answer questions about his vaccination status.

NFL Network reported Monday that the Vikings plan to sign quarterback Case Cookus.

Vikings QB Kellen Mond tests positive, Kirk Cousins close contact

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Kellen Mond tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, NFL Network reported, as three of the team’s QBs were out for Saturday’s practice, including starter Kirk Cousins.

Fellow quarterback Nate Stanley also was out of Saturday’s practice, with NFL Network adding that Cousins is a “high-risk close contact.”

The Vikings did release a statement on the situation but did not name specific players.

“Due to the NFL-NFLPA COVID-19 protocols, multiple players will be held out of tonight’s practice inside TCO Stadium,” the team said in its statement. “We will share further updates as they become available in the coming days.”

According to NFL rules related to COVID-19, any players or staff who have been vaccinated are not considered high-risk close contact.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer expressed frustration over the team’s predicament.

“That’s why people should get vaccinated,” Zimmer said, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Quarterback Jake Browing, who has no NFL experience and was signed to a reserve/future contract in January, was expected to handle all of the reps in practice Saturday. Browning is vaccinated.

“It’s important to be available when you’re playing football in a team sport,” Zimmer said in regard to Browning. “… He’s vaccinated. That helps to be the backup.”

“I’m looking forward to the new chapter in my life and have the 12th Man behind me every step of the way,” Mond said in a statement released by Texas A&M and posted to Twitter.

Mond, a redshirt senior, will graduate this year. He returned to Texas A&M for 2020 with a stated goal to “improve myself.”

In 2020, Mond had 19 touchdowns and three interceptions.

He leaves as the school’s all-time leader in total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions and attempts.
