Cowboys tab Brian Schottenheimer as OC

The Dallas Cowboys named Brian Schottenheimer as the team’s new offensive coordinator on Saturday.

Schottenheimer, who served as an offensive consultant for the Cowboys during the 2022 season, will fill the position previously held by Kellen Moore.

Moore spent four seasons in that role before agreeing to part ways with the Cowboys last week. He has since joined the Los Angeles Chargers as their offensive coordinator.

“I am very happy to have Brian take on this key role with our team. He has been an important part of our staff already and has a great grasp of where we are and where we want to go,” Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. “Brian also has an exceptionally strong foundation, history and relationships beyond his time here that translate very well into understanding what our approach to operating and executing will be for the future. This will be an exciting and efficient transition for us that I am confident will help yield the growth and results we all want and expect.”

Schottenheimer, 49, was the Jacksonville Jaguars’ passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2021. He was the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator from 2018-20, a role he previously held with the then-St. Louis Rams (2012-14) and New York Jets (2006-11).

“I am thrilled and thankful for this exciting opportunity and embrace the high standards and expectations that come with this role and the Dallas Cowboys organization,” Schottenheimer said in a statement. “Having long-standing, great respect and appreciation for Mike McCarthy as a person, a leader and a head coach makes this a very rewarding and compelling moment for me. The ability to win with great teammates that share the same goals, and alignment with how to reach them, makes this special for me and I am very grateful for it.”

He is the son of the late Marty Schottenheimer, a former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington and then then-San Diego Chargers.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced Wednesday that McCarthy would call the offensive plays for the team next season.

Report: Kellen Moore set to join Chargers as OC

Less than 24 hours after being let go by the Dallas Cowboys, Kellen Moore reportedly has a new job.

NFL Network reported Monday that Moore is set to become the new offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Moore would replace Joe Lombardi, fired by the Chargers earlier this month after the Chargers squandered a 27-point lead in a 31-30 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in an AFC wild-card game.

The Chargers’ passing offense — led by star Justin Herbert — ranked third in the NFL (269.6 yards per game), the total offense was ninth (359.3), and the team finished 13th in points (23.0) this season.

Moore, 34, had been a player and coach with the Cowboys since 2015. He spent the final three years of his six-year NFL playing career as a backup quarterback for Dallas.

After working in 2018 as the Cowboys’ quarterback coach, Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator and spent the past four seasons in that role. However, head coach Mike McCarthy announced what he called a mutual parting with Moore on Sunday.

The Cowboys went 12-5 in the 2022 regular season and earned their second straight playoff trip. After beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 in the wild-card round, they fell 19-12 to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round.

Dallas ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring offense in 2022 with 27.5 points per game.

Reports: Kellen Moore, Cowboys part; Mike McCarthy to call plays

The Dallas Cowboys and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore mutually agreed to part ways, NFL Network and the Dallas Morning News reported Sunday night.

According to the Morning News, head coach Mike McCarthy will assume play-calling duties for the Cowboys.

Moore, 34, had been a player and coach with the Cowboys since 2015. He spent the final three years of his six-year NFL playing career as a backup quarterback for Dallas.

After working 2018 as the Cowboys’ quarterback coach, Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator and spent the past four seasons in that role.

The Cowboys went 12-5 in the 2022 regular season and earned their second straight playoff trip. After beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 in the wild-card round, they fell 19-12 to the San Francisco 49ers in last week’s divisional round game.

Dallas ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring offense in 2022 with 27.5 points per game.

The Cowboys will begin searching for a replacement for Moore, one who will not be responsible for calling plays. Moore, meanwhile, has attracted interviews for head-coaching vacancies before and figures to be a popular commodity. He interviewed with the Carolina Panthers this month before that franchise hired Frank Reich to be their next head coach.

The Cowboys also parted with six assistant coaches late last week. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is returning to the staff for 2023.

Report: Kellen Moore lands second interview in Miami

Kellen Moore will have a second interview next week for the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching position, multiple outlets reported Friday.

The Dallas Cowboys’ 33-year-old offensive coordinator met with the Dolphins’ search committee late last week as one of several candidates to replace the fired Brian Flores.

Moore joined the Cowboys as quarterbacks coach in 2018 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019. This season, Dallas led the NFL in scoring with 31.2 points per game and in total offense with 407.0 yards per game.

The Dolphins averaged 20.1 points and 307.0 yards, finishing 9-8 in a season that included a seven-game losing streak and a seven-game winning streak.

Cowboys sign OC Moore to extension

The Dallas Cowboys signed offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to a multi-year contract extension, meaning he has withdrawn his name from consideration for other coaching positions, including the head job at his alma mater, Boise State. NFL Network reported the “lucrative” deal, which the team announced Saturday, is for three years.

“I am very excited to remain with the Dallas Cowboys as the offensive coordinator,” Moore, 32, said in a statement Saturday night. “I will no longer be pursuing the head coaching job at Boise State. I love Boise State. I will always root for them, and I hope one day to be a part of the program again.”

Moore, who won 50 games as a quarterback for Boise State from 2008-11, was considered to be a strong candidate to replace Bryan Harsin, who was hired by Auburn after it fired Gus Malzahn earlier this month. Moore and Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos interviewed for the position, according to numerous reports.

The Cowboys have thrived offensively since he became coordinator two years ago. This year, Dallas ranks 12th in total offense (376.1 ypg), even after starting quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury during a victory over the New York Giants on Oct. 11. In Moore’s first year of calling plays last year, Dallas ranked first in total offense at 431.5 yards per game.

“We are building something special here in Dallas,” Moore said. “I am thankful to the Jones family and Mike McCarthy for providing me with the opportunity to coach these special players. I am excited for us to put it all together and finish the job.”

Dallas (6-9) closes its season at the New York Giants (5-10) on Sunday. The winner of the Dallas-Giants game makes the playoffs as the NFC East champion if the Washington Football Team (6-9) loses to the Philadelphia Eagles (4-10-1) on Sunday night. Washington clinches the NFC East with a win.

Reports: Boise State interviews Moore for head coaching job

Boise State has interviewed former Bronco standout and current Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to be its next football coach, according to multiple reports Saturday.

Reports include Moore and Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos as the top candidates to replace Bryan Harsin, who was hired by Auburn after it fired Gus Malzahn earlier this month.

Moore, 32, had an illustrious career as Bronco. He set the FBS record for wins as the Broncos’ quarterback, going 50-3 from 2008-11.

He spent three seasons with the Detroit Lions and three with the Cowboys before Dallas hired him as its quarterbacks coach in 2018, shortly after he retired as a player. Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator last season and was retained when the Cowboys hired head coach Mike McCarthy this past spring.

McCarthy said earlier this week that he had not discussed the Boise State opportunity with Moore, who also calls plays for the Cowboys.

“I’m sure, if there’s something to talk about we’ll definitely talk about it,” McCarthy said. “I think with anything [involving] career advancement you just handle those opportunities on an individual basis.”
