Reports: Ken Dorsey joining Cowboys as pass-game specialist

Ken Dorsey is expected to join the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching staff as a passsing game specialist, multiple media outlets reported Monday night.

Dorsey most recently served as the Browns’ offensive coordinator, holding that post for the 2024 season. Cleveland let him go on Jan. 5.

Before his stint with the Browns, Dorsey was the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers from 2013-17, then took on various roles with the Buffalo Bills from 2019-23.

Dorsey, 43, will be working under Brian Schottenheimer, who is preparing for his first season as Cowboys coach. Dallas fired Mike McCarthy on Jan. 13 after five seasons at the helm.

The Browns ranked 28th in total offense and 32nd — dead last — in scoring last season with Dorsey as OC.

Report: Ken Dorsey under consideration for Cowboys OC job

Ken Dorsey is considered a candidate for the vacant offensive coordinator position with the Dallas Cowboys, ESPN reported on Thursday.

The position is open after then-offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was promoted to the role of head coach.

Schottenheimer, who did not hold play-calling responsibilities this past season under then-head coach Mike McCarthy, is expected to call plays for the Cowboys in 2025.

Dorsey, 43, was fired earlier this month after one season as the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns’ offense was hampered by rotating quarterbacks and another season-ending injury to running back Nick Chubb. Cleveland mustered an NFL-low 15.2 points per game. Dorsey assumed the play-calling role midway through the season.

This is the second consecutive season that Dorsey has been fired. The Buffalo Bills dismissed him 10 games into the 2023 season amid perception the Josh Allen-led offense was underachieving.

Reports: Browns fire OC Ken Dorsey after 3-14 season

The Cleveland Browns fired Ken Dorsey, parting ways with their second offensive coordinator in as many seasons, multiple outlets reported Sunday.

Offensive line coach Andy Dickerson also was let go, per reports.

The Brows concluded their season Saturday with a 35-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, finishing 3-14. Their offense, hampered by rotating quarterbacks and another season-ending injury to running back Nick Chubb, mustered only an NFL-low 15.2 points per game.

Cleveland will finish last in the NFL in scoring with 258 points — fewer than half the points scored by the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski, who has a 40-44 record in five seasons with the Browns, is expected to be retained, NFL Network reported.

This is the second consecutive season that Dorsey, 43, has been fired. The Buffalo Bills dismissed him 10 games into the 2023 season amid perception the Josh Allen-led offense was underachieving.

In Cleveland, Dorsey replaced Alex Van Pelt, who was let go within days of the Browns getting routed 45-14 by the Houston Texans in the wild-card round of the playoffs last Jan. 13. The Van Pelt offense ranked 10th in the NFL in points per game (23.3).

It was expected Dorsey would take quarterback Deshaun Watson to the next level, but the Browns were 1-6 when Watson was lost for the season with a torn Achilles. Veteran Jameis Winston and second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over at the position, with Bailey Zappe making his first start of the season in the loss on Saturday.

Browns OC Ken Dorsey takes play-calling role: ‘No magic pill’

Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey goes from listening on the headset to calling plays this week, one of the numerous moving parts in Cleveland entering Week 8.

Jameis Winston will start with Deshaun Watson out for the season and the Browns (1-6) searching for answers to their poor output on offense.

“Just trying to win a football game. Just trying to win a game,” Dorsey said. “Just like players, if somebody takes a step back or is not in there, players have to be ready to step up. It’s no different for coaches.”

His first test comes against the Baltimore Ravens (5-2), who are riding a five-game winning streak. The Ravens are averaging 35 points per game since starting the season 0-2, but aren’t without weaknesses. Baltimore is last in the NFL in pass defense (287.1 yards per game).

The Browns’ season-high point total was 18 in the team’s lone win of the season. Cleveland’s scoring average — 15.6 points per game — is 29th in the NFL, but the Browns are last in offense (253.9 yards per game), yards per play (4.00), yards per pass play (4.43), third-down conversion percentage (23.71) and sack percentage (13.89).

Dorsey was handed the play-calling responsibility by head coach Kevin Stefanski in hopes of a new voice bringing a spark.

“It’s a lot of reflection, evaluating where we’re at. It’s just a decision that’s for right now. We take these things week-by-week,” Dorsey said.

“There’s not a magic coach or a magic pill to play better on offense. It’s going to be work. It’s attention to detail. At the end of the day, it’s us locking in and fighting. Playing with extreme physicality. Playing with speed. Playing with confidence.”

Dorsey said he evaluated where the offense is and covets the chance to help Cleveland turn the season around.

“There’s a lot of great coaches out there. A ton of great coaches,” he said. “During the week you do a lot of game-planning and put your guys in position to make plays. The great coaches are the ones throughout the years that make those adjustments in-game. Not just coaches but staffs. Because you want to utilize all of your eyes on game day. We’ve been able to do that at a high level. That’s where you saw those second halves, doing some good things. We want to make those adjustments so you don’t come in Sunday and say, ‘Oh, we didn’t see that.’”

Browns announce hiring of Ken Dorsey as OC

The Cleveland Browns on Monday announced the hiring of Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator.

Dorsey replaces Alex Van Pelt, was let go within days of the Browns getting routed 45-14 by the Houston Texans in the wild-card round of the playoffs on Jan. 13.

Dorsey was fired as OC by the Buffalo Bills midseason.

“Ken has worked with and elevated some of the top quarterbacks in this league and will bring a fresh approach to our offense,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said in a release. “He knows what it takes to be successful at that position as he was one of the most successful college quarterbacks of all time and that has helped him become a tremendous coach. He has a history with this team and knows what the Browns mean to this city.”

The 42-year-old Dorsey spent two of his four seasons as an NFL quarterback with the Browns in 2006 and 2008.

Dorsey was the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers from 2013-17. He took the same job with the Bills in 2019 and had the title of offensive passing game coordinator added in 2021. He became offensive coordinator in 2022.

Van Pelt was hired by the New England Patriots last week to be their OC.

Report: Browns hiring former Bills OC Ken Dorsey

The Cleveland Browns are turning to former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey to get quarterback Deshaun Watson back on track.

ESPN reported Sunday night that the Browns have hired Dorsey, less than three months after the Bills fired him during the season. The Akron Beacon Journal confirmed the team’s interest in Dorsey but said the hiring had not been made official.

The 42-year-old Dorsey spent two of his four seasons as an NFL quarterback with the Browns in 2006 and 2008.

Buffalo dismissed Dorsey as the team struggled to a 5-5 start to this season. The Bills were held to 25 points or fewer in six straight games prior to his departure.

Dorsey called plays for Buffalo’s offense as coordinator, although his role with the Browns in that regard remains unclear. His predecessor in Cleveland, Alex Van Pelt, did not determine play-calling. Head coach Kevin Stefanski kept that role and has done so since he was hired in 2020.

Van Pelt was let go within days of the Browns getting routed 45-14 by the Houston Texans in the wild-card round of the playoffs on Jan. 13.

Dorsey was the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers from 2013-17. He took the same job with the Bills in 2019 and had the title of offensive pass game coordinator added in 2021. He became offensive coordinator in 2022.

Bills fire Ken Dorsey, tab Joe Brady as interim OC

The Buffalo Bills fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey on Tuesday and named quarterbacks coach Joe Brady to the post on an interim basis.

The moves came hours after the Bills committed four turnovers in a 24-22 setback to the Denver Broncos in Orchard Park, N.Y. The loss was the second in a row for Buffalo (5-5), which trails the AFC East-leading Miami Dolphins (6-3) by 1 1/2 games.

The Bills rank eighth in the NFL in points per game (26.2) and seventh in total offense (370.1 yards per game). Buffalo, however, is tied for second in total turnovers (18), with star quarterback Josh Allen responsible for 13 of them (11 interceptions, two fumbles).

Dorsey, 42, replaced Brian Daboll in the role after Daboll departed to become the head coach of the New York Giants prior to the 2022 season. Buffalo finished second in the NFL in points (28.4) and total yards (397.6) last season.

Dorsey worked the previous three seasons (2019-21) as the team’s quarterbacks coach after spending seven seasons with the Carolina Panthers (2011-17).

Brady, 34, spent 2020-21 as the offensive coordinator with the Panthers before joining the Bills in 2022 as the QBs coach.
