49ers promote Kerryon Johnson, put JaMycal Hasty on IR

The San Francisco 49ers promoted Kerryon Johnson from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday and placed fellow running back JaMycal Hasty on injured reserve.

Johnson, who joined the 49ers on Sept. 14, has been summoned as the club attempts to piece together its backfield for Sunday night’s game against the visiting Green Bay Packers (1-1).

Trey Sermon, Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick also are in line to play for San Francisco (2-0), while rookie Elijah Mitchell is listed as doubtful with a shoulder injury.

Johnson, 24, had 52 rushes for 181 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games (two starts) last season with the Detroit Lions. He has rushed for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns and added 61 catches for 527 yards and three scores in 34 career games with the Lions.

Hasty, 25, sustained a high ankle sprain during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 17-11 road win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The injury to Hasty came one week after starter Raheem Mostert was lost to a season-ending knee injury.

Hasty gained 38 yards on five rushes and made four catches for 21 yards.

Mitchell and Sermon (concussion) were also hurt against the Eagles but Sermon has cleared the protocol.

San Francisco also placed defensive tackle Kevin Givens (ankle) on injured reserve on Saturday.

Raheem Mostert says he’s out for season; 49ers sign Kerryon Johnson

San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert announced on social media Tuesday that he has opted to undergo season-ending knee surgery following a Week 1 injury.

Mostert suffered chipped knee cartilage Sunday during San Francisco’s win over the host Detroit Lions. He was placed on injured reserve Monday, with coach Kyle Shanahan saying at the time that Mostert would receive an arthroscopic procedure and miss eight weeks.

ESPN reported Tuesday that the 49ers signed free agent running back Kerryon Johnson to bolster the position.

“Faithful, After consulting with multiple doctors and weighing my options, I will be having season-ending surgery to repair my knee,” Mostert wrote Tuesday. “This gives me, without a doubt in my mind, the best possibility at coming back 110%.”

Mostert left the Week 1 contest injured after taking two carries for 20 yards. His wife later claimed that Niners fans sent her “HUNDREDS, THOUSANDS” of abusive messages on social media, angry that the injury-prone Mostert was hurt again.

San Francisco ended up riding little-known rookie Elijah Mitchell for 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. The depth chart also includes third-round draft pick Trey Sermon, a healthy inactive on Sunday, and JaMycal Hasty.

Johnson joins that stable of backs with three years of experience (34 games, 16 starts) with the Detroit Lions. The former second-round draft pick was waived in May and claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles the next day, but the Eagles later waived him with an injury settlement.

Report: Eagles release RB Kerryon Johnson with injury settlement

The Philadelphia Eagles released running back Kerryon Johnson from injured reserve with an injury settlement, ESPN reported Thursday.

The Eagles had claimed Johnson off waivers from the Detroit Lions in May. But Johnson, 24, battled a knee injury over the summer.

Philadelphia waived/injured Johnson on Aug. 17 before Thursday’s move, which is designed to let Johnson return later this season if he signs with another team.

The 2018 second-round draft pick played 34 games (16 starts) over three seasons with the Lions and gained 1,225 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns along with three receiving scores.

Eagles snatch Kerryon Johnson off waivers

Former Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson didn’t stay on the open market long, getting claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, the team announced.

Johnson was waived by the Lions on Thursday. The former second-round pick in 2018 from Auburn was seemingly expendable with Detroit selecting D’Andre Swift last year at No. 35 overall, picking up Jamaal Williams earlier this offseason and drafting Jermar Jefferson late in this year’s draft.

Johnson may not get much of an opportunity in Philadelphia with a backfield that sports Miles Sanders, rookie Kenny Gainwell, Jordan Howard and Boston Scott. As was the case last season, Sanders will likely be the lead running back with the rest vying for time behind him.

Gainwell was taken in the fifth round last week, but is seen as a back that may be a solid NFL runner and pass-catcher.

Johnson had a solid rookie season in 2018, gaining 641 yards, but he played in only 10 games due to a knee injury. Another injury limited him to eight games in 2019 and he saw little playing time behind veteran Adrian Peterson and Swift in 2020, getting just 71 touches all season, 52 carries and 19 receptions.

Johnson, 23, ran for 1,225 yards on 283 carries and eight touchdowns in his three seasons with Detroit, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. He had 61 receptions for 527 yards and three scores, averaging 8.6 yards a catch.

Report: Lions to waive RB Kerryon Johnson

The Detroit Lions are set to waive running back Kerryon Johnson after three seasons, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

The Lions took Johnson with a second-round pick in the 2018 draft but a crowded backfield made him expendable behind D’Andre Swift and Jamal Williams. The Lions also took Jermar Jefferson in the 7th round of last week’s draft.

Johnson was limited to 18 games by injuries his first two seasons. He played in all 16 last season, including two starts.

He finishes his tenure in Detroit with 1,225 rushing yards and eight touchdowns to go with 61 catches for 527 yards and three more TDs.

Peterson signing one-year deal with Lions

Adrian Peterson agreed to a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions, the running back told former ESPN reporter Josina Anderson on Sunday.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Peterson’s contract is worth $1.05 million and includes incentives.

The move reunites Peterson with Darrell Bevell, his former offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings. Peterson was selected to the Pro Bowl in all four seasons (2007-10) under Bevell.

“They’re giving me an opportunity to play,” Peterson told Anderson. “I know coach Bevell from my days in Minnesota. Ultimately I feel comfortable going there and helping them to get better.”

Peterson, 35, will join fellow running backs Kerryon Johnson, second-round rookie D’Andre Swift, Ty Johnson and Bo Scarbrough as well as fullback Jason Cabinda as members of the Lions’ backfield. Last season, Detroit finished 21st in the league in rushing last season at 103.1 yards per game.

Johnson apparently was pleased with Peterson’s decision to join the Lions, posting on Twitter that, “If i were to take a picture with him would that be fan boying too much??”

The news of Peterson’s move comes two days after he was released by the Washington Football Team.

The 2012 NFL MVP and a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Peterson led the NFL in rushing three times and has 14,216 career rushing yards, which ranks fifth all-time and just 1,053 yards behind Lions legend Barry Sanders (15,269). Frank Gore, who is on the New York Jets’ roster, is third (15,347) while Walter Payton (16,726) and Emmitt Smith (18,355) are further ahead.

Peterson’s 111 rushing touchdowns are fourth-best behind Hall of Famers Smith (164), LaDainian Tomlinson (145) and Marcus Allen (123).

In 15 games last season, Peterson rushed 211 times for 898 yards and five touchdowns while adding 17 receptions for 142 yards.

Detroit opens the season against the visiting Chicago Bears next Sunday. The Lions will host Peterson’s former club, Washington, on Nov. 15.
