Bengals acquire RB Khalil Herbert from Bears to address need

The Cincinnati Bengals acquired running back Khalil Herbert from the Chicago Bears on Tuesday in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Herbert provides depth in the Bengals’ backfield with fellow running back Zack Moss dealing with a neck injury and deemed sidelined indefinitely by head coach Zac Taylor on Monday.

Chase Brown is the leading rusher for the Bengals but came out of a career day against the Raiders last week with bruised ribs. No other running back on the Cincinnati roster has a rushing attempt in 2024.

Herbert, 26, fell out of the RB rotation in Chicago with D’Andre Swift signing and Roschon Johnson emerging as a short-yardage option.

He rushed eight times for 16 yards with a touchdown with the Bears this season. He has rushed for 1,791 yards and nine touchdowns to go along with 45 catches for 291 yards and two scores in 48 career games (12 starts) with the Bears.

Herbert was selected by the Bears in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech.

Report: Bears RB Khalil Herbert (ankle) out multiple weeks

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert is expected to miss multiple weeks due to an ankle injury, NFL Network reported Sunday.

NFL Network also reported the Bears are signing Darrynton Evans off Miami’s practice squad with fellow running backs Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer also nursing injuries.

Herbert sustained his injury during Chicago’s 40-20 victory over the Washington Commanders on Thursday. He rushed for 76 yards on 10 carries prior to the injury.

Herbert, 25, has team-leading totals in carries (51) and rushing yards (272) in five games this season for the Bears (1-4), who host the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday.

He has rushed for 1,436 yards and six touchdowns and added 33 catches for 236 yards and two scores in 35 career games with Chicago. He was selected by the Bears in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Evans, 25, had 14 carries for 64 yards in six games with Chicago last season.

He has rushed 30 times for 125 yards and added five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in 12 career games with the Tennessee Titans and Bears. He was selected by the Titans in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Bears RB David Montgomery ruled out vs. Giants

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the host New York Giants due to knee and ankle injuries.

Montgomery did not practice all week on the heels of being injured in the first quarter of last Sunday’s 23-20 win against the Houston Texans.

Khalil Herbert replaced Montgomery and finished with 157 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Montgomery, 25, has rushed for 159 yards and has five catches for 38 yards in three games for the Bears (2-1).

Defensive backs Jaylon Johnson (quadriceps) and Dane Cruikshank (hamstring) did not practice all week and have been ruled out versus the Giants (2-1).

Linebacker Matt Adams (hamstring) was limited in practice Friday and is doubtful to face New York. Tight end Ryan Griffin (Achilles) also is doubtful despite failing to practice for the second straight day.

Wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. (hamstring) and linebacker Sterling Weatherford (ankle) participated fully in practice on Friday and are questionable to play versus the Giants. Defensive lineman Robert Quinn (illness) and kicker Cairo Santos (personal) also are questionable for Sunday’s game.

Bears expected to activate RB David Montgomery for ‘MNF’

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery is expected to be active for Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, NFL Network reported.

Bears coach Matt Nagy said last week there was a good chance Montgomery would be activated off injured reserve and available to play. Montgomery sustained a knee injury in Chicago’s Week 4 win against the Detroit Lions and returned to practice last week.

He was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 9.

Despite missing four games, Montgomery still leads Chicago with three rushing touchdowns and ranks second with 309 rushing yards behind rookie Khalil Herbert (351). The rookie emerged as the Bears’ featured back in Montgomery’s absence, rushing for 344 yards – fourth most in the NFL — over that span.

Montgomery, 24, has rushed for 2,268 yards and 17 touchdowns and caught 85 passes for 672 yards and three TDs in 35 games since the Bears drafted him in the third round in 2019.

Herbert, 23, is still expected to have an impact when the Bears (3-5) visit the Steelers (4-3). The Bears have lost three straight games.
