Reports: Commanders sign K Matt Gay, release Zane Gonzalez

The Washington Commanders are signing Matt Gay to a one-year deal and releasing fellow kicker Zane Gonzalez, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

Gay’s contract is worth up to $5 million with $4.35 million guaranteed, the most guaranteed money in NFL history for a kicker on a one-year deal, per NFL Network.

The Indianapolis Colts released Gay earlier this month, two seasons into a four-year deal signed in March 2023.

Gay, 31, has converted 85.5 percent of his field-goal attempts (165 of 193) and 96.3 percent of his PATs (206 of 214) in 90 games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2019), Los Angeles Rams (2020-22) and Colts. He made the Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl with the Rams during the 2021 season.

The Commanders had a revolving door at kicker during their breakthrough 12-5 campaign in 2024: Austin Seibert kicked in nine games, Gonzalez in six (plus the playoffs) and Greg Joseph and Cade York in one contest each.

Gonzalez, who turns 30 next week, had been out of the NFL since 2021 when he signed with Washington in November. Including the postseason, he made 12 of 15 field goals and 27 of 27 extra points for the Commanders.

Gonzalez had re-signed with Washington on a one-year deal last month.

Giants activate K Randy Bullock, sign K Cade York

The New York Giants added Randy Bullock to the active roster and signed fellow kicker Cade York to the practice squad on Friday.

Bullock will handle the kicking duties for the fourth straight game on Sunday when the Giants (3-8) host the New England Patriots.

The 33-year-old veteran originally signed with New York on Nov. 3 after Graham Gano had to undergo knee surgery. Bullock has made both field goals and all six extra points he has attempted with the Giants.

York, 22, was a fourth-round pick by Cleveland in 2022. He made 24 of 32 field goals and 35 of 37 PATs in 17 games with the Browns last season.

Cowboys release struggling K Tristan Vizcaino

The Dallas Cowboys released struggling kicker Tristan Vizcaino, head coach Mike McCarthy announced Monday.

His exit leaves former soccer player Brandon Aubrey as the only kicker on the 90-man roster at training camp in Oxnard, Calif.

Vizcaino, 27, missed four straight kicks during the Cowboys’ most recent practice on Saturday. He made 22 of 35 attempts across eight padded practices, according to ESPN.

Vizcaino has made 11 of 12 field-goal attempts and 15 of 20 extra points in 10 career NFL games with the San Francisco 49ers (2020), Los Angeles Chargers (2021), Arizona Cardinals (2022) and New England Patriots (2022).

Aubrey, 28, played four years of college soccer as a defender at Notre Dame and was a first-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC.

Aubrey signed with the Cowboys after playing for the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions this spring. He has made 26 of 35 attempts so far in camp, per ESPN.

Dallas has not expressed an interest in adding a veteran to the competition. Robbie Gould and Mason Crosby are both available.

Brett Maher set a Cowboys record with 137 points last season but was not re-signed after missing five PATs during the postseason.

Reports: Panthers to audition K Eddy Pineiro

The Carolina Panthers are bringing in veteran kicker Eddy Pineiro for a visit, multiple outlets reported Sunday.

Other reports said the team will also audition Brian Johnson now that fellow kicker Zane Gonzalez is sidelined with a groin injury.

Both Pineiro and Johnson worked with Panthers special teams coordinator Chris Tabor when Tabor held the same role with the Chicago Bears.

Gonzalez, 27, was hurt while kicking on the sidelines in the third quarter of Friday’s 21-0 preseason win against Buffalo. Coach Matt Rhule said it was a “significant” injury that requires a “long-term” recovery period.

Pineiro, 26, was cut by the New York Jets this week after losing a competition with Greg Zuerlein. He has made 31 of 36 field goals and 36 of 39 extra points in 21 games with the Bears (2019) and Jets (2021).

Johnson, 23, spent time on Chicago’s practice squad in 2021. He converted all 10 field-goal attempts and nine of 13 PATs in seven games last season with New Orleans and Washington.

Cowboys sign K Brett Maher

The Dallas Cowboys signed Brett Maher and released fellow kicker Jonathan Garibay on Tuesday.

Maher, who played for Dallas from 2018-19, will now compete with Lirim Hajrullahu for the starting job.

Maher, 32, was one of four kickers who worked out for the Cowboys at training camp on Tuesday morning.

He has made 77.4 percent of his field-goal attempts (65-of-84) and 96.3 percent of his PATs (78-of-81) in 37 games with the Cowboys and New Orleans Saints (2021).

Maher set the Dallas franchise record with a 63-yard field goal against the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 20, 2019.

In March, the Cowboys released veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein, who made 29-of-35 field goals and 42-of-48 extra-points last season. Zuerlein signed with the New York Jets.
