Rams GM open to extension for RB Kyren Williams

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams enjoyed a career season and is heading into the final year of his rookie contract.

With that in mind, Rams general manager Les Snead sounds like a man who is open to discussing an extension for his star running back.

“I think that’s something that’s going to be on the plate,” Snead said on Friday. “He would be someone that after three years you could begin discussing, let’s call it, renegotiating, starting anew. Because I do think Kyren is someone who is a Ram and has a very impactful role for us.”

Williams, 24, created quite the impact in 2024, recording career highs in carries (316), rushing yards (1,299) and rushing touchdowns (14). He has rushed for 2,582 yards and totaled 31 touchdowns (26 rushing, five receiving) in 38 games since being selected by the Rams in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Williams also became the third Rams player age 24 or younger to have at least 27 scrimmage touchdowns in a two-year span, joining Todd Gurley (40, 2017-18) and Hall of Fame member Eric Dickerson (34, 1983-84).

“When you look at it and you have an evaluation of your roster and it starts with those free agents or those guys that based on their contract status, what does that look like for you moving forward? You sit down and you say, ‘All right, let’s put this puzzle together,’” Rams coach Sean McVay said Thursday.

“It is an imperfect thing, but we try our best to make the best decisions for the football team. I’m really proud of the body of work that Kyren has put together, what he represents, and all the different things that we really want to be about as a football team. He’s checking a lot of those boxes. I think that’s certainly something that will be discussed as well.”

Rams RB Kyren Williams (foot) missing OTAs

Though his coach insisted there was “nothing to worry about,” Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams will miss voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) with a foot issue.

Coach Sean McVay said Williams will return in time for training camp.

“He’ll be ready to go for training camp, but there’s a little issue when he was training,” McVay told reporters “And (I’ll) kind of just leave it at that. But nothing to be concerned about.”

Williams broke his foot during 2022 OTAs and missed seven weeks near the beginning of his rookie campaign. Then, he missed four games in the middle of last season with an ankle injury and also sat out Week 18 when many starters rested.

That didn’t stop him from ranking third in the NFL in rushing, as Williams put up 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns on 228 attempts despite playing just 12 games (11 starts).

Williams, 23, figures to be the Rams’ No. 1 running back again in 2024, though the team drafted Michigan’s Blake Corum in the third round.

“(Williams) is doing an excellent job physically, feeling really good,” McVay said. “He’ll be ready to roll and be a consistent producer for us this year.”

Rams designate RB Kyren Williams for return from IR

The Los Angeles Rams designated running back Kyren Williams for return from injured reserve Wednesday and the expectation is that he’ll be ready to play this week.

Williams has missed the past four games with an ankle injury sustained against the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 15. The Rams (4-6) visit the Cardinals (2-9) on Sunday.

The Rams also designated safety Jason Taylor II for return but it’s unclear if he’ll be ready to play Sunday. The Rams have 21 days to add him to the 53-man roster.

Williams’ return to practice comes a day after the team waived running back Darrell Henderson.

Henderson rushed 46 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns in four games (all starts) this season. He also had 10 catches for 103 yards.

Henderson, 26, was drafted in the third round by the Rams out of Memphis in 2019. He has 1,854 career rushing yards with 15 touchdowns and 76 catches for 577 yards and four scores in 54 games (32 starts) for Los Angeles.

Williams suffered his injury during the fourth quarter of the Rams’ 26-9 win over the Cardinals last month. Williams rushed for 158 yards against the Cardinals, the most by a Rams running back since December 2020.

Williams, 23, has 456 yards rushing and six touchdowns in six games (five starts) this season. He has 13 receptions for 105 yards and one score.

Taylor, a seventh-round pick in this year’s draft, has been on IR since the start of the season with a groin injury. He’s yet to play in his first pro game.

Rams place RB Kyren Williams (ankle) on injured reserve

The Los Angeles Rams placed Kyren Williams on injured reserve Saturday, three days after they sent fellow running back Ronnie Rivers to IR.

Williams (ankle) and Rivers (knee) will sit out the next four games for Rams (3-3), who host the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) on Sunday. They are eligible to return for Los Angeles’ road game against the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 26.

Williams, 23, leads the Rams in carries (97), rushing yards (456) and rushing touchdowns (six). He also has 13 catches for 105 yards and a score.

Williams took over the lead role after Cam Akers, who had 22 carries for 29 yards in Week 1, was demoted and eventually traded.

The Rams addressed their current backfield woes earlier in the week by elevating running back Royce Freeman to the active roster and signing Darrell Henderson and Myles Gaskin to the practice squad. Rookie Zach Evans also is on the roster.

Reports: Rams RB Kyren Williams could miss four weeks

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams could sit until Week 11 due to an ankle injury he pushed through in a career-best 158-yard performance against the Arizona Cardinals last week.

According to ESPN, Williams won’t play this week and is likely to miss multiple games because of the injury and might need up to a month to heal, which would include the team’s bye in Week 10.

The Rams (3-3) welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2) to Los Angeles this week.

Williams was a surprise RB1 for the Rams and leads the team with 97 carries for 456 yards and six touchdowns in six games this season. He took over the role after Cam Akers, who had 22 carries for 29 yards in Week 1, was demoted and eventually traded.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said Williams and his primary backup, Ronnie Rivers (knee), will be “out for a little bit.” McVay indicated rookie Zach Evans would be next in line for the primary ballcarrier role with Los Angeles also signing Royce Freeman to the active roster.

The Rams are at Dallas in Week 8 and visit Green Bay in Week 9 (Nov. 5) before their bye week.

If Williams needs the full four weeks to recover, he would be ready to return for a Week 11 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

Freeman, 27, has played solely on special teams during three games with Los Angeles this season. He has rushed for 1,473 yards with eight touchdowns in 68 career games (nine starts) with the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans and Rams.
