All-Pro OL Lane Johnson of Eagles, Erik McCoy of Saints out with injuries

Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro offensive tackle Lane Johnson and New Orleans Saints starting center Erik McCoy have been ruled out of their game Sunday, with Johnson sustaining a concussion and McCoy a groin injury.

Philadelphia also ruled out wide receiver Britain Covey (shoulder), while guard Mekhi Becton (finger) was questionable to return.

Johnson, 34, is a two-time first-team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection. He has started all 146 of his games since the Eagles picked him fourth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. He played in 100 percent (147) of the team’s offensive snap counts in the first two games this season.

Covey, 27, had seven receptions for 34 yards in three games this season, including one catch for 11 yards on Sunday. He entered Sunday with 10 catches for 65 yards in 35 games since 2022 for Philadelphia.

McCoy was injured on the third play from scrimmage after the Saints received the opening kickoff. Starting left guard Lucas Patrick moved to center, and Oli Udoah took Patrick’s place on the line.

The Saints’ Blake Grupe kicked a 34-yard field on that possession and New Orleans (2-0) had a 3-0 edge on Philadelphia (1-1) at halftime.

McCoy, 27, has started all 77 games he has played since New Orleans selected him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. He played 100 percent of the offensive snaps (1,152) in 2023 when he was selected to the Pro Bowl. McCoy made the NFL All-Rookie Team in 2019.

He played 95 percent (119) of the offensive snaps in the first two games of the season.

Eagles RT Lane Johnson downgraded to questionable vs. Bills

Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson has been downgraded to questionable for Sunday’s game against the visiting Buffalo Bills due to a groin injury.

A four-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro, Johnson was not on the injury report at all this week and has started all 10 games this season. He was expected to have an MRI prior to the game.

Should Johnson be unable to play, Jack Driscoll would be in line to start in his absence. Driscoll, 26, has played in 10 games this season and started 16 over his career. He has appeared in 47 games since the Eagles selected him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Johnson, 33, has started all 137 games in which he has played with the Eagles since he was selected by the team as the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Eagles RT Lane Johnson injures ankle, exits in first quarter

Eagles All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson limped to the locker room in the first quarter and was replaced in the lineup by Jack Driscoll. Philadelphia announced he was questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Johnson was slow to get to his feet following a scrum at the line of scrimmage as Philadelphia moved the ball against the host New York Jets on Sunday.

He was engaged with Jets defensive end John Franklin-Myers as D’Andre Swift was tackled into Johnson’s lower legs.

Johnson, 33, returned in training camp from offseason surgery to repair an adductor muscle tear, the injury he played through last postseason, and hasn’t allowed a sack since 2020.

Sunday marked his 132nd career regular-season start. He last played a full regular season in 2015, when he started all 16 games.

He signed a one-year extension worth a reported $33.45 million in the offseason.

Eagles RT Lane Johnson cleared to return to workouts

Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson is ready to return to offseason activities three months removed from surgery to repair a torn adductor.

“Officially cleared!” Johnson wrote Friday morning on Twitter.

Johnson, 32, sustained the injury late in the regular season but opted to delay surgery in order to play in the postseason. He started all 15 games in which he played last season and all 127 with the Eagles since being selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

A four-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro, Johnson signed a four-year, $80.75 million contract that included an $18,835 million signing bonus and $30 million guaranteed in March.

Reports: Eagles sign RT Lane Johnson to $33.4M extension

Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson signed a one-year contract extension worth $33.4 million, of which $30 million is guaranteed, per multiple reports Friday.

The extension stretches Johnson’s contract by one year through the 2026 season and brings the Eagles’ total potential financial commitment remaining to him to $80.75 million over four seasons.

The deal comes after Johnson, 32, delayed surgery and played in the postseason despite a torn abdominal tendon. As head coach Nick Sirianni phrased it, Johnson continued to play like the “best tackle on the planet.”

“He’s a warrior,” quarterback Jalen Hurts said of Johnson. “He’s a true warrior and a very important piece of this team. He’s been doing great things for a very long time, and I’m very grateful to have him. We’re grateful to have him and I’m happy that he’s kind of coming out of this thing clean.”

Though Johnson missed two games before returning to face the New York Giants in the postseason in January, nobody was questioning his toughness.

“It’s kind of how I was raised,” Johnson said before Super Bowl LVII. “My dad was a bull rider back in the day, so guys had torn groins, collapsed lungs. That was kind of their culture, so I grew up around that kind of stuff.”

Johnson has been vulnerable and transparent about football-related anxiety and briefly stepped away from the team in 2021. But Johnson said in February he was very much committed to playing in Philadelphia as center Jason Kelce weighed the decision to play a 13th season in 2023.

Johnson has started 127 career games with the Eagles since being selected as the No. 4 pick in the 2013 draft. He is a four-time Pro Bowl and two-time first-team All-Pro selection. He has not allowed a sack since Week 11 of 2020.

Eagles RT Lane Johnson has surgery to repair torn adductor

Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn adductor.

Per NFL Network, Johnson is facing a 10-to-12-week recovery. He should be good to go prior to training camp.

Johnson, 32, posted a picture on Twitter of himself from a hospital bed with a link to the 1996 comedy film “Happy Gilmore.” The line of “Better luck next year” was played, a tip to Johnson’s sense of humor.

Johnson, who first sustained the injury in Week 16, played every offensive snap in Sunday’s Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He played 96 percent and 81 percent of the snaps in Philly’s first two postseason games as well.

Johnson missed the final two games of the regular season.

Johnson earned his second All-Pro nod and fourth Pro Bowl selection this season.

He has not allowed a sack since Week 11 of the 2020 season.

Including 15 starts this season, Johnson has started 127 regular-season games since Philadelphia selected him with the No. 4 overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson will undergo surgery later this week to repair the torn adductor he’s been playing with for more than a month, ESPN reported Monday.

He put off the procedure so that he could play in the postseason.

Johnson, who first suffered the injury in Week 16, played every offensive snap in Sunday’s Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He played 96 percent and 81 percent of the snaps in Philly’s first two postseason games as well.

Johnson, 32, missed the final two games of the regular season.

Johnson earned his second All-Pro nod and fourth Pro Bowl selection this season.

Eagles notebook: Jordan Mailata pays homage to Jason Kelce

Three years after being drafted in the seventh round, former Australian rugby player Jordan Mailata is starting at left tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Mailata, 25, credits center Jason Kelce for helping him become so successful so quickly. He started 16 games for the NFC East champions in 2022.

And Mailata used more than his words to prove his point. He held up his cellphone during an interview on Monday at Super Bowl LVII Opening Night in Phoenix, displaying a photo of Kelce as his background screen.

“That’s Fat Batman,” Mailata said. “That’s how much of an inspiration he is to me. It’s an honor playing with Jason Kelce and the player and the person that he is. You couldn’t ask for a better teammate and leader.”

–There’s no questioning the toughness of Eagles All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson, who put off surgery to repair a torn core muscle until after the season.

The 10-year Eagles veteran thrives on challenges and is ready for a big one on the other side of the line Sunday when he opposes Chiefs All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones.

“I think Chris Jones is the premier guy in the league,” Johnson said. “His ability to rush the passer and play the run at his size, and what he can do with his size — 6-6 and 310, 315 — he just dominated really every game he’s been a part of.”

Jones matched his career high with 15.5 sacks during the regular season and recorded two against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

“There’s times he will line up on the right tackle, left tackle,” Johnson said. “I feel like what they do is they just try to go down the line and see what mismatches they have.”

–The Philadelphia defense allowed a combined 14 points and 391 total yards in playoff wins against the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.

“Really we just hold each other accountable and complement each other,” Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox said. “It doesn’t matter what it is. We complement each other in everything that we’re doing. For me, when you’re doing stuff like that, it’s just so special.”

Philadelphia led the NFL with 70 sacks during the regular season and became the first team in NFL history with four players collecting double-digit sacks: Haason Reddick with 16 and Javon Hargrave, Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham with 11 each.

Cox, 32, who had seven sacks in his 11th season with the Eagles, said it will be business as usual Sunday against the Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“We’ve just got to continue doing what we’re doing,” Cox said. “I don’t think anybody in our room is going to try to do anything special. We’ve just got to stick to what we’ve been doing all year and when we get an opportunity to get him on the ground, we’ve gotta get him on the ground.”
