Texans RB Joe Mixon (ankle) returns to practice

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon returned to practice Thursday, raising questions about his availability to play in Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Mass.

Mixon has been sidelined since injuring his ankle during the Texans’ 19-13 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sept. 15.

Mixon, 28, has rushed for 184 yards and a touchdown in two games this season.

A Pro Bowl selection in 2021, Mixon has rushed for 6,596 yards and 50 touchdowns to go along with 289 receptions for 2,183 yards and 13 scores in 99 career games (90 starts) with the Cincinnati Bengals (2017-23) and the Texans. He was selected by the Bengals in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma.

Starting tackles Laremy Tunsil (ankle) and Tytus Howard (hamstring) and starting left guard Kenyon Green (knee) also returned to practice on Thursday.

Reports: Texans LT Laremy Tunsil undergoes knee surgery

Houston Texans Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to address an injury that forced him to miss three games in 2023, NFL Network and KPRC reported Sunday.

Tunsil, 29, is expected to make a quick recovery and be ready for offseason activities, per the reports.

According to KPRC, Tunsil had the knee drained a few times last season, after which he earned his fourth Pro Bowl honor. Tunsil still started 14 games and both postseason games.

Tunsil has started all 108 games he’s played in since being selected No. 13 overall in the 2016 draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Tunsil signed a three-year extension worth $75 million in March 2023 that will keep him under contract through the 2026 season.

Texans rule out Laremy Tunsil vs. Jags, put Derek Stingley Jr. on IR

The Houston Texans ruled out left tackle Laremy Tunsil for Sunday’s game against the host Jacksonville Jaguars and placed cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. on injured reserve.

The Texans announced Saturday that Tunsil would not travel to Jacksonville with the team.

Signed to a three-year, $75 million contract in March, Tunsil has started one game this season for Houston.

Tunsil, 29, earned his third Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and started all 17 games. He has 95 starts in seven seasons with the Texans and the Miami Dolphins (2016-18), who drafted him 13th overall in 2016.

Stingley, who sustained a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s practice, will miss the team’s next four games.

Stingley, 22, has made nine tackles and allowed four catches for 37 yards and no touchdowns on six targets this season.

The 2022 first-round pick (third overall) made nine starts as a rookie and posted 43 tackles, one interception and one sack without giving up a touchdown. He sustained a season-ending leg injury in Week 10.

Also on Saturday, the Texans signed safety DeAndre Houston-Carson to the active roster from the practice squad. Houston also elevated defensive tackle Khalil Davis and offensive tackle Austin Deculus from the practice squad.

Reports: Texans trade Brandin Cooks, re-sign Laremy Tunsil

The Houston Texans are trading wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the Dallas Cowboys for draft picks, NFL Network and ESPN reported Sunday.

The Texans will receive a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft and a sixth-round selection in 2024, per the reports. The Texans also are expected to pay $6 million of Cooks’ $18 million guaranteed contract to facilitate the trade, per KPRC2 in Houston.

Houston also re-signed Laremy Tunsil to a three-year, $75 million deal that once again makes him the highest-paid left tackle in NFL history, according to NFL Network.

Tunsil, 28, who represented himself, secured a contract that includes a $30 million signing bonus, $50 million fully guaranteed and $60 million in total guarantees, per the report.

Tunsil earned his third Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and started all 17 games. He has 94 starts in seven seasons with Houston and the Miami Dolphins (2016-18), who drafted him 13th overall in 2016.

Cooks, 29, caught 57 passes for 699 yards and three touchdowns in 13 starts with the Texans in 2022.

A six-time 1,000-yard receiver, Cooks has 630 career receptions for 8,616 yards and 49 touchdowns in 132 games (120 starts) with the New Orleans Saints (2014-16), New England Patriots (2017), Los Angeles Rams (2018-19) and Texans. The Saints drafted him with the 20th pick in 2014.

Cooks replaces Noah Brown in Dallas. Brown, who agreed to a one-year deal with the Texans earlier this week, had 43 catches for 555 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games (13 starts) in 2022.

Texans OL Laremy Tunsil has successful thumb surgery

Houston Texans Pro Bowl offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil underwent successful surgery Thursday to repair the fully torn UCL in his thumb, NFL Network reported.

Tunsil is out 4-6 weeks, per the report.

Tunsil was injured in the second quarter of last week’s loss to the New England Patriots and left the game. He was replaced by Geron Christian.

The 27-year-old Tunsil made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons. He has started all 77 games he has played in since being taken No. 13 overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2016 draft. He’s in his third season in Houston.

Houston Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb and miss about four weeks, coach David Culley said Wednesday.

The hope had been that Tunsil would be able to play through the torn UCL and put off surgery until the offseason.

He was injured in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots and left the game. He was replaced by Geron Christian.

Tunsil, 27, made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons. He has started all 77 games he has played in since being taken No. 13 overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2016 draft. He’s in his third season in Houston.
