Michael Vick, Larry Fitzgerald lead College FB HOF ballot

Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Vick and Terrell Suggs highlight 78 former players on the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame ballot released Monday by the National Football Foundation.

The ballot also includes nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision as well as 101 players and 32 coaches from the divisional ranks.

Fitzgerald, Vick and Suggs all made the ballot in their first year of eligibility.

“It’s an enormous honor to just be on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot considering more than 5.62 million people have played college football and only 1,074 players have been inducted,” NFF president & CEO Steve Hatchell said in the release. “The Hall’s requirement of being a First-Team All-American creates a much smaller pool of about 1,500 individuals who are even eligible. Being in today’s elite group means an individual is truly among the greatest to have ever played the game, and we look forward to announcing the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class early next year.”

Vick led Virginia Tech to the then-BCS National Championship game on Jan. 4, 2000, a 46-29 loss to Florida State. He finished third in the 1999 Heisman Trophy voting, throwing for 2,065 yards and rushing for another 682. He combined for 22 touchdowns. He went No. 1 to the Atlanta Falcons in 2001.

Fitzgerald won the Biletnikoff Award in 2003 and finished second in Heisman balloting after catching 92 passes for 1,672 yards and 22 TDs. Pitt retired his No. 1 jersey in 2013. He went on to be the No. 4 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.

Suggs recorded 44 sacks in three seasons at Arizona State with 65 1/2 tackles for loss. He was selected 10th overall in the 2003 draft by the Baltimore Ravens.

Membership voting goes through June 30. The announcement of who will be inducted will come in early 2024.

Larry Fitzgerald lists self as former athlete on LinkedIn

Former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is now a former athlete — at least according to his newly created LinkedIn profile.

While Fitzgerald has yet to publicly announce his retirement from the NFL, this appears to be another step in that direction. He labeled himself as an “Investor. Philanthropist. Former-Athlete” on his profile.

“Excited join the LinkedIn community! Looking forward to connecting and sharing ideas together through the platform,” Fitzgerald wrote on Twitter.

Fitzgerald, 38, played his entire career with the Cardinals, who used the third overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft on him. He last played in the 2020 season.

With the Cardinals, he made 11 Pro Bowl teams and played in Super Bowl XLIII, a 27-23 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers to conclude the 2008 season.

Once he officially retires, Fitzgerald’s election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, when he’s eligible, is certain. His 1,432 career receptions are second only to the legendary Jerry Rice (1,549), and he is second in receiving yards with 17,492, again trailing only Rice (22,895). He is sixth in touchdown receptions with 121, behind five current Hall of Fame members.

Larry Fitzgerald: No ‘urge’ to play now

Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, currently a free agent, finally gave an answer Friday as to how he feels about signing on for an 18th NFL season.

“For now, I’ll be a radio broadcaster. I just don’t have the urge to play right now,” Fitzgerald said on “Let’s Go,” a national SiriusXM show he is launching with Tom Brady and moderated by Jim Gray. “I don’t know how I’ll feel in September, October, November moving forward, but I just, today, I just don’t have the urge, and I think I have to be respectful of that. Football is not one of those games you want to walk out there and play and not be fully engaged and ready to prepare and do the things necessary that you need to do.”

Fitzgerald played his entire career with the Arizona Cardinals, who used the third overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft on him. He will turn 38 on Aug. 31.

With the Cardinals, he made 11 Pro Bowl teams and played in Super Bowl XLIII, a 27-23 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers to conclude the 2008 season.

If he chooses to retire, Fitzgerald’s election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, when he’s eligible, is certain. His 1,432 career receptions are second only to the legendary Jerry Rice (1,549), and he is second in receiving yards with 17,492, again trailing only Rice (22,895). He is sixth in touchdown receptions with 121, behind five current Hall of Fame members.

On Thursday, Cardinals general manger Steve Keim told The Arizona Republic that Fitzgerald would be welcomed back if he wanted to play.

“Every year it hasn’t been any different,” Keim said. “Larry represents himself and he and I will sit down and talk, and I’ve always told him, ‘Let me know what you want to do.’ That’s the kind of respect that he certainly deserves. Like (coach) Kliff (Kingsbury) said, the ball’s in his court. It’s truly up to him.

“He knows if he wants to be a Cardinal he can be a Cardinal. But at the same time, you don’t go tell Larry Fitzgerald or give him ultimatums. We’ve got too much respect for him to do that. If he wants to play, I know he’ll let us know he wants to play.”

Larry Fitzgerald on NFL future: ‘I haven’t decided anything’

Unrestricted free agent wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said he has yet to make up his mind if another season in the NFL is on his horizon.

“I haven’t decided anything,” Fitzgerald said Friday in an interview with ESPN. “Training camp starts in a few weeks. I’m excited, it’s going to be another great year for the NFL.”

Fitzgerald’s former team, the Arizona Cardinals, have bolstered their wide receiver corps by selecting Purdue’s Rondale Moore in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. They also signed seven-time Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Green in March.

Fitzgerald, 37, has spent his entire NFL career with the Cardinals, who selected him with the third overall pick of the 2004 draft.

He is an All-Pro, an 11-time Pro Bowl selection and the winner of the 2016 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Fitzgerald is second all-time in the NFL in receiving yards list (17,492) and receptions (1,432) behind Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice. He is the leader in touchdown receptions (121) among active players and sixth all-time. He has played in 263 games for the Cardinals.

Fitzgerald had 54 receptions for 409 yards and one touchdown in 13 games last season.
