Roger Goodell: NFL working on adding Berlin game

The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers will close the 2024 NFL International Series with a game in Munich on Sunday, and commissioner Roger Goodell said the NFL is working on adding a game in Berlin in 2025.

In fact, Goodell said Saturday the prospects are strong of playing a game in the German capital city next season.

“I usually say don’t believe rumors,” Goodell said Saturday at a fan event in Munich. “In this case, I say believe them.”

The league entered the German market in November 2022 with a game in Munich, and in 2023, Frankfurt Stadium hosted two games in that city.

Allianz Stadium in Munich is sold out for the Giants-Panthers clash, with about 70,000 seats to be filled.

The NFL International Series saw a game in Brazil and three in London this year, as well.

Plans call for eight games to be played outside the United States each year beginning in 2025, with more on tap when the NFL turns to an 18-game annual schedule.

Tank Bigsby, Jaguars jolt Patriots in London

Tank Bigsby rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 32-16 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday in London.

Trevor Lawrence threw for 193 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars (2-5), who prevailed for the second time in their past three games after an 0-4 start.

The Patriots (1-6), in turn, lost their sixth game in a row after recording an opening week victory versus the Cincinnati Bengals.

Bigsby received the bulk of the workload for the Jaguars with fellow running back Travis Etienne Jr. out with a hamstring injury.

Bigsby eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the second time in three games and paced the Jaguars from the second quarter onward.

New England jumped out to a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter in what was rookie quarterback Drake Maye’s second career start.

Maye completed 26 of 37 passes for 276 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes, including a 16-yarder to JaMycal Hasty to open the scoring.

But the Jaguars responded in the second quarter and started a run of 25 unanswered points after Lawrence found rookie Brian Thomas Jr. in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown.

Jacksonville’s special teams helped solidify the Jaguars’ edge going into halftime when Parker Washington returned a punt 96 yards for a touchdown to boost the lead to 22-10.

Washington appeared to make an ill-advised catch of the punt inside his own 5-yard line. But he then found a seam and outraced the Patriots’ coverage team to the end zone.

New England had an opportunity to make its own comeback late in the third quarter when Maye completed three consecutive passes of 20 or more yards, capped by a 22-yard touchdown toss over the middle to K.J. Osborn. The Patriots, however, failed on a two-point try, which kept it a two-score game.

New England regained possession with 3:58 left, but its last drive ended with Maye being sacked by Travon Walker and an incomplete pass on fourth and 26 from his own 10.

Caleb Williams (4 TDs), Bears jolt Jaguars in London

Rookie Caleb Williams tossed a career-best four touchdown passes to lead the Chicago Bears to a 35-16 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in London.

Williams continued to impress, completing 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards and an interception. He also ran for 56 yards on four attempts.

His four scoring tosses helped the Bears (4-2) win their third game in a row.

It was Williams’ third multi-touchdown performance in his past four starts. He finished with a 124.4 passer rating.

Jacksonville (1-5) failed to put together back-to-back wins after snapping a four-game losing streak last week.

Trevor Lawrence completed 23 of 35 passes for 234 yards and threw two touchdown passes and an interception. The pick led to a 1-yard touchdown by D’Andre Swift early in the fourth quarter to give the Bears their final points of the game.

Chicago recorded four sacks, including three on Lawrence before he was replaced with 3:21 left by Mac Jones.

Swift paced the Bears on the ground with 91 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Williams spread the ball around effectively to eight different pass catchers. Tight end Cole Kmet led Chicago with five catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns, including two in the first half to stake the Bears take a 14-3 lead at intermission.

Keenan Allen also caught five passes for 41 yards and two touchdowns in the second half to help the Bears break the game open.

Lawrence’s two touchdown passes went to Gabe Davis, who caught five passes for 45 yards.

Lawrence’s top target, however, was tight end Evan Engram, who caught a game-high 10 passes for 102 yards after missing the Jaguars’ previous four games due to a hamstring injury.

The Bears have a bye next week before visiting the Washington Commanders on Oct. 27.

The Jaguars will play in London again next Sunday, this time at Wembley Stadium against the New England Patriots.

Bears G Teven Jenkins (ankle) sits out practice

Chicago Bears guard Teven Jenkins sat out practice on Thursday as the team prepares to face the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend in London.

Jenkins was downgraded after being listed as a limited participant in practice on Wednesday because of an ankle injury. He has started all five games this season and recovered a fumble for the Bears (3-2).

Jenkins was not alone as defensive lineman Zacch Pickens (groin) and defensive backs Jaquan Brisker (concussion) and Terell Smith (hip) each sat out their second consecutive practice session. Veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis also sat out on Thursday, one day after he missed that session due to rest.

Cornerback Kyler Gordon was upgraded from limited to a full participant in practice as he deals with a heel injury. Defensive back Tyrique Stevenson was added as a limited participant with a calf injury.

Milton delays Jaguars’ UK departure; still scheduled for two London games

Hurricane Milton delayed the Jacksonville Jaguars’ planned departure for London, but the NFL said there is no change to the schedule for Sunday.

The Jaguars called off an arrival press conference near the team hotel scheduled for Friday. The team is expected to land in England by Friday and play their NFL-high 12th regular-season game in London on Sunday. They’ll play the Chicago Bears (3-2) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Jaguars are spending all of next week in the city with back-to-back games in London for the second consecutive season. Next week, the Jaguars play a “home” game against the New England Patriots (1-4) at Wembley Stadium the following Sunday.

London is comfortable territory for the Jaguars, who’ve played at least one game in the International Series since 2013 with the exception of the isolated 2020 season due to COVID-19. Jacksonville is 6-5 in London games.

“We still have to get over there and get acclimated quickly. The travel, all of that, is familiar to us,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said. “That does give you a peace of mind traveling over there. The bottom line is when you get there, you still have to get acclimated, keep the guys rolling Friday and Saturday, and get ready for the game on Sunday.”

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence said he shared with new teammates yet to make the trip across the Atlantic Ocean that the key is getting your body “on track” as soon as possible.

“That time change can get you if you’re not careful,” he said.

Considered the home team this week, Bears officials opted for an earlier departure and have been in London since Tuesday, affording players more time to rest and adjust to a six-hour time difference from Chicago. They held their first full-speed practice on Thursday after walk-through workouts on Wednesday.

“It doesn’t seem like there’s any numbers that tell you that one way or another,” Bears coach Matt Eberflus said of the team heading to London days before the Jaguars. “But to me, it’s about focusing on us. That’s really all we can do.”

Jacksonville (1-4) won for the first time this season last week.

The Bears previously have played twice in London, facing the Buccaneers in 2011 and Raiders in 2019.

Bears, Vikings, Jaguars, Panthers named for 2024 games in Europe

The Jacksonville Jaguars will play their 12th game in franchise history in their home away from home during the 2024 regular season.

The Jaguars are among the four teams designated by the NFL on Thursday to take part in the International Games.

The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings join the Jaguars as home teams in London next season, with the Carolina Panthers set to play in Munich, Germany.

Opponents and game dates will be announced this spring when the league schedule is finalized.

The Jaguars are set to play at Wembley Stadium, with the Vikings and Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Panthers game will be played at Allianz Arena, the home of FC Bayern Munich.

The NFL announced last month that 2024 also will see the first-ever game played in South America, with Brazil as the host country. The teams have yet to be revealed.

“Taking our game to more fans around the world is a major priority for the league and its 32 teams, and we are delighted to be returning to London and Munich in 2024,” said Peter O’Reilly, executive vice president, club business, league events and international at the NFL. “Whether tackle or flag football, international passion for the game and the NFL continues to grow, and having our teams and their world-class athletes play games and engage with fans around the world is an important part of becoming a truly global sport.”

NFL clubs agreed to increase the number of international games to as many as eight beginning with the 2025 season.

The NFL committed to scheduling games in Mexico City when renovation projects are finalized at Estadio Azteca.

Falcons WR Drake London set to return against Cardinals

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London was removed from the injury report after practicing in full on Friday and is expected to play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

London missed last week’s loss against the Minnesota Vikings with a groin injury. He returned to limited practice on Wednesday and coach Arthur Smith said he was trending in the right direction.

However, fellow wide receiver Mack Hollins was ruled out along with cornerback Dee Alford. Both suffered ankle injuries against the Vikings. Defensive lineman David Onyemata is questionable with his own ankle injury. The Falcons are already without defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, who suffered a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago.

London, 22, leads the Falcons (4-5) in receptions (37) and receiving yards (438) and has two touchdown catches in eight games (all starts).

Selected eighth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, London has recorded 109 catches for 1,304 yards and six touchdowns in 25 career games (23 starts).

Hollins is the Falcons’ second leading wideout this season with 17 catches for 247 yards, but has yet to reach the end zone.

Alford is the team’s slot corner. His absence could create additional snaps for fourth-round rookie Clark Phillips III and/or veterans Mike Hughes and Tre Flowers.

Justin Tucker kicks six field goals, fuels Ravens past Titans

Justin Tucker kicked six field goals Sunday and the Baltimore Ravens held off a Tennessee Titans’ rally in the second half to earn a 24-16 win in London.

After making four field goals in the first half to help Baltimore (4-2) open up a 15-point lead at halftime, Tucker converted from 20 and 36 yards out in the fourth quarter to restore a two-score advantage. That became vital when Tennessee got a 38-yard field goal from Nick Folk with 38 seconds remaining.

But Isaiah Likely recovered an onside kick to end the Titans’ comeback hopes and vault the Ravens into first place in the AFC North by a half-game over idle Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Tennessee dropped to 2-4 with its second straight loss.

Lamar Jackson completed 21 of 30 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown with an interception. He also led the Ravens in rushing with 62 yards on 13 carries.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed 8 of 16 passes for 76 yards with an interception before leaving the game with an ankle injury. Derrick Henry rushed for 97 yards on 12 carries, including a 15-yard touchdown in the third quarter that drew Tennessee within 18-13.

Baltimore dominated the first half, scoring on five of six possessions and outgaining Tennessee 242-66. Tucker started the scoring with a 41-yard field goal at the 10:26 mark of the first quarter, followed by Folk kicking a 26-yard field goal for the Titans.

Tucker made it 6-3 with a 28-yarder with four seconds left in the period and then added a 23-yarder with 10:13 remaining in the half. The Ravens finally got into the end zone when Jackson flipped a 10-yard touchdown pass to Zay Flowers with 3:28 on the clock.

Tennessee’s Kyle Phillips fumbled a punt with one second left that was recovered by Del’Shawn Phillips. That enabled Tucker to kick a 29-yard field goal as time expired, giving Baltimore an 18-3 lead at the break.

Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton was ejected in the third quarter following a helmet-to-helmet hit on Titans wide receiver Chris Moore.

Moore, who spent his first five seasons with the Ravens, struggled to get to his feet and needed to be assisted off the field.

Ravens, Titans hope to turn things around in London

There are plenty of sights to see in London.

Tennessee defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons isn’t interested in them ahead of the Titans’ Sunday game against the Baltimore Ravens in the English capital.

“This is a business trip,” he said. “I haven’t been looking too much at London. My main goal is to go over there and get a win, and hopefully that’s the main goal for everyone. Not just that we’re going out of the country to play ball, but let’s get a win.”

Tennessee will aim for that victory on Sunday in its last game before a bye week. Win and the Titans will take their week off at 3-3, in good position in the AFC South with five of its six division games left. Lose and they will be 2-4 with the defending division champ Jacksonville Jaguars appearing to find their groove after back-to-back wins in London.

The Titans are 0-3 away from Nashville, including a 23-16 defeat at Indianapolis last week in which their defense couldn’t stop Zack Moss and their offense again settled for red-zone field goals instead of cashing in for touchdowns.

Moss ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns, while Tennessee managed one touchdown out of four trips inside the Colts’ 20. The Titans came away with nothing after reaching the 5 in the fourth quarter as Derrick Henry was stuffed for no gain on fourth-and-1.

“We haven’t scored enough touchdowns, period,” Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. “You look at getting down in the red zone, kicking field goals and getting behind the sticks, hurting ourselves, putting ourselves in long-yard situations. We got to score more as an offense.”

To a lesser extent, Baltimore (3-2) is experiencing some of the same issues. The Ravens were damaged by turnovers and sacks on Sept. 24 in a 22-19 overtime loss to Indianapolis and used the same formula to squander an early lead last week in a 17-10 defeat at Pittsburgh.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson absorbed four sacks from the Steelers while coughing up a fumble and throwing a late interception. Baltimore finished with three turnovers, a sure way to lose on the road anywhere but particularly so against a division rival.

“There was just too many things going wrong,” Ravens tight end Mark Andrews said. “It’s almost like a sleeping giant, man. We need to wake up.”

The Ravens are tied for second in the league in scoring defense (15 points per game) and second in sacks with 18, indicative of how they have stifled the opposition. No team has managed more against Baltimore than the 24 points Cincinnati got in Week 2.

However, the Ravens have lost six fumbles, tied for the second-highest total in the NFL. That’s why Baltimore is tied for 17th in the league in scoring average (21.8 points per game) despite Jackson completing passes at a career-best 69.9 percent.

“We should be 5-0, I believe,” Jackson said. “We just have to put points on the board, protect the ball.”

This will be the teams’ 27th meeting, regular season and postseason combined, and the series is tied at 13-13.

Ravens fly to England on Monday to prepare for Titans

The Baltimore Ravens flew to England on Monday morning to prepare for Sunday’s game against Tennessee.

It is by far the earliest any team has departed for an international contest so far this season.

Atlanta, Jacksonville and Buffalo all traveled on the Thursday prior to their respective games in London.

Coming off a 17-10 loss Sunday at rival Pittsburgh, the Ravens are hoping to avoid a repeat of their last trip to the United Kingdom in 2017.

That time, Baltimore flew out for its first-ever international game on Thursday night and then got thumped 44-7 by the Jaguars.

“It’s mostly driven by the fact that we didn’t do well, so we did the opposite,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said when asked about the travel strategy, per ESPN. “There’s no data — and we looked for it — to say when you should go out there and what’s the ideal thing. I’ll say this kind of in jest, what’s the science on that? As often is the case, they really don’t know. That’s just the way it is.”

The Titans (2-3) are scheduled to fly out after practice Thursday for Sunday’s game against the Ravens (3-2) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Hopefully, by the time the game comes around … we’ve slept there six nights. You’d like to think we’ll be pretty well ready to go,” Harbaugh said. “I think that’s probably a big part of the decision to try and do it this way. Other teams go in there and say, ‘OK, we’re not going to mess with it. We’ll just stay on our own clock and play at 9:30 (British time) and we’ll get in and out.’ We don’t have to deal with it. It’s just kind of two schools of thought.”
