Oklahoma Sooners running back Jovantae Barnes (2) leaps for the end zone but comes up short during a college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Maine Black Bears at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

Jovantae Barnes runs for 203 yards as Oklahoma cruises past Maine

Jovantae Barnes ran for a career-high 203 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries to help lift Oklahoma to a 59-14 win over Maine on Saturday in Norman, Okla.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Sooners (5-4).

Jackson Arnold threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns, exiting late in the third quarter as the Sooners had the game well in hand.

Oklahoma had 665 yards of total offense, nearly 300 more than they’d had in any game this season, including 381 rushing. It was the Sooners’ biggest offensive output since late in the 2022 season.

Maine (4-5), an FCS program, had just 251 yards, 107 on the ground.

By halftime, the Sooners had gained 402 yards, their highest output in any full game this season.

Much of that was thanks to Barnes, who had carries of 74 and 29 yards in the first half.

Maine struck first, eating up nearly five minutes with a nine-play, 68-yard drive after forcing a punt on the first drive.

Black Bears quarterback Carter Peevy broke off a 40-yard gain, setting up a 3-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Heisey on the next play.

It didn’t take long for Barnes and the Sooners to answer.

Barnes broke off a 74-yard run — the Sooners’ longest rushing play since 2021 — on the next play from scrimmage, setting up his 2-yard touchdown run two plays later.

Oklahoma’s defense clamped down after the Black Bears had success in their opening drive. Maine didn’t have another drive of more than 24 yards until the fourth quarter and punted on seven of its next eight full drives.

The Sooners took the lead early in the second quarter, on Taylor Tatum’s 1-yard score.

OU scored 28 points in the second quarter to blow the game open, including on J.J. Hester’s 90-yard reception from Arnold. Hester finished with four receptions for 112 yards.

Barnes then added an 8-yard touchdown run just before halftime and scored on a 19-yard run early in the third.

The last Oklahoma rusher to gain 200 yards was Eric Gray in 2022.

Peevy finished 13 of 24 for 123 yards and a touchdown for the Black Bears, more than half of that yardage output to Joe Gillette, who finished with three catches for 64 yards.

Phil Jurkovec tosses 2 TDs as Boston College defeats Maine

Phil Jurkovec was 25-of-37 passing for 320 yards and two touchdowns as Boston College defeated New England foe Maine 38-17 for its first win of the season on Saturday night.

The Eagles (1-2) scored the final three touchdowns of the first half to erase a 10-7 deficit.

Zay Flowers and tight end George Takacs were on the receiving end of Jurkovec’s touchdowns.

Pat Garwo III recorded two of BC’s three rushing scores, including a 30-yarder to put the game away with 1:48 left in the fourth quarter.

Jaden Williams and Garwo ran to the end zone in the second quarter, helping the Eagles to a 28-10 halftime lead.

Boston College, which started 0-2 for the first time since 2011, has now won 33 consecutive games against FCS opponents.

Joe Fagnano (21-of-43, 289 yards) threw two touchdowns for Maine (0-3).

BC logged 431 total yards to Maine’s 378.

Jurkovec hit Takacs on three straight pass plays during BC’s second series, but the Eagles logged just one first down before a shanked punt set Maine up inside opposing territory and led to Cole Baker’s 45-yard field goal with 6:15 left in the first.

The Eagles responded four plays into the ensuing series as Jurkovec and Flowers connected for a 51-yard touchdown to make it 7-3.

Flowers is now fifth all-time in career receptions at BC.

Two plays after Trevin Ewing’s 73-yard kickoff return, Maine took a 10-7 lead on a 17-yard pass play from Fagnano to Shawn Bowman.

The high-scoring opening frame continued as Takacs caught a 2-yard lob from Jurkovec with 1:12 left. A 53-yard bomb to Williams set up the score.

BC bookended the second quarter with Williams and Garwo touchdown runs, capping eight and six-play drives, respectively.

After a penalty negated a long Takacs completion, BC settled for a 46-yard Connor Lytton field goal on its first second-half series.

Maine got back on the board as Montigo Moss hauled in a 4-yard pass with 7:44 left in the third quarter. Fagnano’s second touchdown throw concluded an 8-play, 75-yard drive.

Boston College aims to end slide vs. Maine

Boston College will try to break from its first 0-2 start since 2011 when nearby Maine makes a Saturday visit to Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Despite four touchdown passes by Phil Jurkovec, BC’s offense has averaged 233.5 total yards per game this season. Last weekend, at Virginia Tech, the Eagles were held to 155 yards of total offense in a 27-10 loss.

The Eagles have an FBS-low 16.5 yards per-game on the ground. Lead back Pat Garwo rushed for only 15 yards in the ACC opener against the Hokies.

“We have to get creative finding ways to run the ball,” BC coach Jeff Hafley said. “Whether it’s on the perimeter, whether it’s gap schemes, zone schemes, spreading it out, we have to run the football.”

The bright spots for Boston College have been on defense and special teams. Kam Arnold had a career-high 12 tackles last week at Virginia Tech, and punter Danny Longman is eighth nationally in punting yards this season.

But Hafley knows that BC has to put it together collectively.

“I think our special teams has played really well, and Danny was outstanding (last week) on nine of his 10 punts,” Hafley said. “Overall, I think the defense has been solid. We gave up one big run, but it was 17-10 (late) and they were fighting … We have a lot of football left to play.”

Maine (0-2), of the Football Championship Division, scored 15 fourth-quarter points in its 21-18 loss to Colgate last weekend.

Black Bears quarterback Joe Fagnano was 25-of-39 passing for 246 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on the ground, via a 6-yard scamper.

The Black Bears — who were shut out 41-0 at New Mexico a week earlier — compiled 362 total yards and held Colgate to just 62 passing yards.

“It starts with Joe, who has led us … ever since I got here,” first-year Maine coach Jordan Stevens said. “He shows the heart that we need to play with.”

One of Maine’s receivers is BC transfer Kobay White, who caught 10 touchdowns as an Eagle from 2017-19. White missed the Colgate game with an injury.

The New England foes began their series in 1913. BC has won six straight meetings, including the most recent, 24-3 in 2015.
