Broncos put Dalton Risner, Marlon Mack on IR

The Denver Broncos placed offensive lineman Dalton Risner and running back Marlon Mack on injured reserve Tuesday, ending their seasons.

In corresponding moves, the Broncos promoted cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian and offensive tackle Will Sherman from the practice squad to the active roster.

Risner sustained a UCL strain in his left elbow in last week’s loss to Kansas City. Mack also was injured last week, sustaining a hamstring injury.

Mack rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown in his six games with the Broncos. He also caught eight passes for 99 yards and a score.

Risner has started all 62 games he’s played in for the Broncos, who selected him in the second round of the 2019 draft.

The Broncos (4-12) end their season this week against the Los Angeles Chargers (10-6).

Short-handed Broncos signing RB Marlon Mack

The Denver Broncos are signing running back Marlon Mack off San Francisco’s practice squad and the 26-year-old veteran will fly with the team to London on Monday for their Week 8 game.

Mack’s agents confirmed the move to ESPN. The Broncos (2-5) play the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5) on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

The signing comes in the aftermath of the injury to Broncos RB Mike Boone, who left the Week 7 loss to the New York Jets and was in a walking boot postgame. Denver contacted Mack’s agents — and the 49ers — before the game against the Jets had even ended, per ESPN.

Mack appeared in two games for the 49ers this season, playing just five total snaps on special teams.

The Broncos have already lost Javonte Williams (ACL) for the season and new RB1 Melvin Gordon has been largely ineffective. Boone injured his ankle in the second quarter Sunday against the Jets and did not return. It’s unclear how serious the injury is.

The Broncos signed Latavius Murray ahead of their Week 6 game; he rushed for 24 yards against the Jets. Gordon rushed 11 times for 33 yards and caught two passes for 17 yards.

The Niners signed Mack to their practice squad after he was released by the Houston Texans.

Mack ran for a career-best 1,091 yards with eight touchdowns in 2019 with the Indianapolis Colts. He has rushed for 2,484 career yards and 20 touchdowns in 47 games (23 starts) for the Colts and 49ers. He also has 57 career receptions for 448 yards and two scores.

49ers put Elijah Mitchell on IR, sign Marlon Mack

The San Francisco 49ers officially placed running back Elijah Mitchell on injured reserve Tuesday and signed Marlon Mack to their practice squad.

Mitchell will miss two months with a sprained right MCL he sustained during the team’s Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday. He won’t require surgery.

Mitchell left Sunday’s 19-10 loss after being tackled by Bears safety Eddie Jackson, whose shoulder collided with Mitchell’s right knee. He finished the game with six carries for 41 yards.

Jeff Wilson Jr. is now atop the 49ers’ depth chart at running back. Jordan Mason and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price are the backups. Wilson rushed nine times for 22 yards in Week 1 and caught two passes for eight yards.

Mack, 26, was released by the Houston Texans last week.

Mack ran for a career-best 1,091 yards with eight touchdowns in 2019 with the Indianapolis Colts. He has rushed for 2,484 career yards and 20 touchdowns in 47 games (23 starts) for the Colts. He also has 57 career receptions for 448 yards and two scores.

The 49ers on Tuesday also promoted safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. from the practice squad to the active roster.

The team also signed offensive lineman Keith Ismael to the practice squad, and released offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland and receiver Connor Wedington from the 16-man squad.

The Niners (0-1) host Seattle (1-0) in Week 2.

Texans re-sign WR Chris Conley, release RB Marlon Mack

The Houston Texans re-signed Chris Conley to their practice squad Monday — after releasing the wide receiver twice last week — and released running back Marlon Mack.

Conley, 29, was first released Tuesday, cutdown day for teams to reach their 53-man limit. He was re-signed Thursday but then cut again Friday to make room for tight end O.J. Howard on the active roster.

He’s now part of the Texans’ 16-man practice squad.

Conley caught 22 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games (10 starts) for the Texans in 2021. He has 15 career TDs in 100 games (62 starts) for the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars and Texans.

Mack, 26, was cut but then re-signed to the practice squad. He’s now a free agent again.

Mack, 26, signed a one-year deal worth $2 million with Houston in the March after five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

Mack was the primary backup to No. 1 tailback and rookie Dameon Pierce on the Texans’ depth chart. Rex Burkhead and Dare Ogunbowale are also on the depth chart. Burkhead was Houston’s leading rusher in 2021 with 427 yards.

Mack rushed 21 times for 90 yards in three preseason appearances.

Mack rushed for a career-best 1,091 yards with eight touchdowns in 2019 with the Colts. He has rushed for 2,484 career yards and 20 touchdowns in 47 games (23 starts) for the Colts. He also has 57 career receptions for 448 yards and two scores.

Reports: Colts, RB Marlon Mack agree to pursue trade

The Indianapolis Colts and Marlon Mack have mutually agreed to pursue a trade.

Per multiple reports, the fifth-year running back requested a new opportunity with the Colts set at the position.

Mack is fully healthy after the Achilles tear he suffered last year. However, he’s played in just one game in 2021, getting five carries in the Colts’ Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines — who signed a contract extension prior to the season — are ensconced as the top two RBs for the Colts.

Mack has rushed for 2,399 yards in 42 games (23 starts) for the Colts, including gaining 1,091 yards in 2019. The Colts drafted Mack in the fourth round of the 2017 draft.

Mack tore his Achilles in the 2020 season opener and signed a one-year deal in the offseason to remain with the team.

Carson Wentz already resides in Indianapolis, and now he’s officially a member of the Colts.

The trade from the Philadelphia Eagles sending Wentz to the Colts and reuniting him with former offensive coordinator Frank Reich — head coach of the Colts — was completed Wednesday at the start of the NFL league year.

Wentz, who revealed earlier in the day he’ll wear No. 2 (coincidentally, the same number as his supposed heir apparent in Philadelphia, Jalen Hurts), was the second overall pick in the 2016 draft behind Jared Goff. Goff was traded to the Detroit Lions in a deal that also became official Wednesday.

The Eagles receive a third-round pick in 2021 and an additional draft pick in return. The Colts announced Wednesday it was a “conditional second-round pick” in 2022, while the Eagles declared they received a “conditional first-round pick” next year. Based on Wentz’s performance and the Colts’ record, the pick could be a first- or second-rounder.

When Wentz is introduced via Zoom conference Thursday, he will reportedly not take questions from Philadelphia media.

Wednesday is also the start of Wentz’s new four-year, $128 million contract extension with almost $70 million guaranteed. The Eagles absorb an NFL-record $33 million cap hit by trading Wentz before his extension kicks in.

Reich was Wentz’s offensive coordinator during the 2017 season in which Wentz guided Philadelphia to an 11-2 record while throwing for 33 touchdown passes before sustaining a season-ending injury in December. Nick Foles piloted Philadelphia through the postseason and Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots.

The Eagles cut ties with Wentz after he was benched during the 2020 season and replaced by Hurts, who went 1-3 as a starter. The Eagles later fired head coach Doug Pederson, but new coach Nick Sirianni arrives from Indianapolis with plans to trial Hurts as the No. 1 quarterback.

In Indianapolis, Wentz is the latest starter in a rapidly spinning QB carousel that has included Andrew Luck (retired), Jacoby Brissett (Dolphins) and Philip Rivers (retired). Rivers played one season with the Colts, leading the team to the playoffs in 2020 before ending his career.

The Colts also will reportedly re-sign running back Marlon Mack, with NFL Network reporting that the 25-year-old will return on a one-year, $2 million deal. Coming off his first career 1,000-yard season in 2019, Mack suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in the Colts’ Week 1 loss at Jacksonville.

Colts place RB Mack (Achilles) on Injured Reserve

The Indianapolis Colts placed running back Marlon Mack on the Injured Reserve list with a torn Achilles tendon on Wednesday.

Mack, 24, was carted to the locker room during the first half of the Colts’ season-opening 27-20 loss to the Jaguars in Jacksonville. The season-ending injury was later confirmed by an MRI.

Mack was injured after catching a pass over the middle and then attempting to turn upfield. He was able to get to his feet but limped significantly while motioning to the sideline before being tended to on the field by the team’s medical staff.

He had four carries for 26 yards and three receptions for 30 yards for the Colts, who will rely on rookie Jonathan Taylor and third-year back Nyheim Hines in his absence.

The team added wide receiver Daurice Fountain from the practice squad to the 53-man roster in Mack’s place. Running back Darius Jackson was signed to the practice squad.

Mark recorded career highs in both carries (247) and rushing yards (1,091) to go along with eight touchdowns in 14 games (12 starts) last season. He also had 14 catches for 82 yards.

A fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of South Florida, Mack has rushed for 2,383 yards and 20 touchdowns in 41 career games. He has 55 receptions for 440 yards and two scores.

Mack has a $2.1 million base salary for this season, the final year of his four-year rookie deal.
