QB Brock Purdy active for 49ers against Bills

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, after missing one game because of an ailing right shoulder, will start for the 49ers on Sunday night against the host Buffalo Bills.

Purdy was listed as questionable after being limited at practice Wednesday and Thursday but was a full participant on Friday and on the active list Sunday.

He was injured in the loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 17 and sat out the 38-10 loss last Sunday at Green Bay as the 49ers fell to 5-6.

“If I’m out there playing, which is the plan, then I’ll be able to make every throw that we have drawn up,” Purdy, 24, said on Friday. “I wouldn’t go out there and play not (at) 100 percent. I want to go out there feeling really good and have the confidence to make every throw, so that’s the plan.”

Purdy is 202-for-306 passing this season for 2,613 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 10 games (all starts).

He won’t have protection from starting left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and left guard Aaron Banks (concussion), who are inactive. Their spots likely will be filled by linemen Ben Bartch and Jaylon Moore.

The 49ers’ other inactives are defensive linemen Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) and Jordan Elliott (concussion), cornerback Deommodore Lenior (knee), linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee) and quarterback Brandon Allen, who started in place of Purdy last week.

For the Bills (9-2), linebacker Matt Milano, who has been dealing with a biceps injury sustained in the preseason, was a full participant at practice all week and was activated from injured reserve on Saturday. He had been listed as questionable on the injury report.

Buffalo’s inactives are wide receiver Keon Coleman (wrist), tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee), cornerback Kaiir Elam, linebacker Eddie Ulofoshio, defensive end Javon Solomon, offensive lineman Will Clapp and quarterback Mike White.

Bills place LB Matt Milano, DT DaQuan Jones on injured reserve

The Buffalo Bills made it official Wednesday, placing linebacker Matt Milano (lower right leg) and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones (torn pectoral muscle) on injured reserve.

Coach Sean McDermott had said Monday that both defensive starters will require surgery, and Wednesday told reporters “the door hasn’t been shut” on either player returning this season.

Buffalo signed veteran linebacker A.J. Klein to the active roster from the practice squad, added defensive tackle Andrew Brown to the practice squad and designated linebacker Baylon Spector to return from the IR.

Both Milano and Jones were hurt Sunday in the Bills’ 25-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

Milano appeared to have his right leg caught in a pile of players early in the game. He had to be helped off the field and was ruled out with what the team called a knee injury.

Milano, 29, was a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selection in 2022. He had 30 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble over five starts this year before his injury.

Jones, 31, had 2.5 sacks in five games to start the season.

Klein, 32, played parts of three seasons with Buffalo from 2020-22, totaling 37 games (16 starts), 110 tackles, one interception, five sacks and two forced fumbles.

He made his NFL debut in 2013 with the Carolina Panthers as a fifth-round draft pick, and also has played for the New Orleans Saints (2017-19), Chicago Bears (2022) and Baltimore Ravens (2022).

The Bills also announced that tight ends Dalton Kincaid (concussion) and Dawson Knox (wrist) as well as defensive end Greg Rousseau (foot) were limited in practice Wednesday.

Cornerback Christian Benford (shoulder) had a full practice, while cornerback Dane Jackson (foot) did not practice.

Bills QB Josh Allen (elbow) misses practice again

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen did not participate in practice for the second straight day on Thursday as he deals with an injury to his right elbow.

Although idle, Allen was in attendance and walked out with a sleeve on his right arm at the team’s practice session in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Allen’s status remains uncertain for Sunday’s home game versus the Minnesota Vikings (7-1). Former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum would draw the start should Allen be unable to play for the Bills (6-2).

Allen sustained his injury during the last drive of Buffalo’s 20-17 loss to the New York Jets last Sunday. The MVP candidate has an NFL second-best 19 touchdown passes against eight interceptions, tied for second most in the league.

Like Allen, safety Jordan Poyer (elbow), linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (groin, heel) and defensive end Greg Rousseau (ankle) did not participate in practice for the second straight day. Cornerback Kaiir Elam (ankle) also did not practice on Thursday after being limited in Wednesday’s session.

Linebacker Matt Milano (oblique) was a full participant in practice on Thursday after being limited in the previous day’s session.
