Giants place rookie running back, punt returner Eric Gray on IR

The New York Giants placed rookie running back and punt returner Eric Gray on injured reserve Tuesday following a calf injury in Sunday’s win over the Washington Commanders.

The Giants also placed offensive tackle Matt Peart (shoulder) on IR, and both will have to miss at least four weeks.

Gray, 23, was a fifth-round pick by the Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma. He played in all seven games for New York (2-5), rushing 13 times for 27 yards and catching one pass for 1 yard.

His primary duty was punt returner (seven for 28 yards). When he was hurt early in Sunday’s game, veteran wide receiver Sterling Shepard filled in and struggled, muffing one punt lost to the Commanders. He was replaced by another receiver, Darius Slayton.

Peart, 26, a third-round pick by the Giants in the 2020 draft out of UConn, has appeared in 40 career games, including five this season, with six starts, none in 2023.

The Giants made other moves Tuesday, including signing running back Jashaun Corbin off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. Corbin was with the Giants’ practice squad in 2022 and released in training camp in 2023.

The team also signed veteran outside linebacker Justin Hollins, 27, who played four games for the Green Bay Packers this season; and claimed running back Deon Jackson, 24, off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

Giants place LT Andrew Thomas (ankle) on IR

The New York Giants’ offensive line took another hit on Tuesday when left tackle Andrew Thomas was placed on injured reserve.

Thomas injured his right ankle during the second quarter of New York’s 38-11 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The second-year tackle will miss three games as a result of Tuesday’s move by the Giants, who saw center Nick Gates (leg) and guard Shane Lemieux (knee) previously sustain season-ending injuries.

“Andrew is a great player,” quarterback Daniel Jones said, per the New York Post. “He’s played well for us this year. He’s an important piece.”

Thomas, 22, has appeared in 21 games (20 starts) since being selected by the Giants with the fourth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Matt Peart, a second-year player out of UConn, replaced Thomas on Sunday.

Wide receiver/return specialist C.J. Board was also placed on injured reserve after sustaining a fractured forearm against the Rams.

The Giants on Tuesday signed tackle Korey Cunningham and wide receiver Dante Pettis off their practice squad.

Cunningham, 26, played three snaps at right tackle on Sunday after playing five on special teams the previous week against the Dallas Cowboys.

Pettis, 25, has recorded 47 receptions for 700 yards in 31 career games (12 starts) with the San Francisco 49ers and Giants.

New York signed four players to its practice squad, including veteran linebacker Bernardrick McKinney.

Three Giants players test positive for COVID-19

Three more New York Giants players have tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced Friday morning.

While the Giants did not disclose the names of the players, multiple media outlets reported that rookie offensive lineman Matt Peart, wide receiver Dante Pettis and tight end Kaden Smith would be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list later in the day.

“Over the course of (Thursday) night, we were notified that three players have tested positive for COVID-19,” the Giants said on Twitter. “The players were immediately notified to self-isolate, and the contact tracing process is underway. Because of the bye week, the office is closed (on Friday).

“Players & coaches will resume work (Monday) with adjusted schedule. Giants & all teams are operating under the NFL’s intensive protocol for remainder of the season. In all matters relating to positive results & close contacts we’re working with the NFL’s Chief Medical Officer.”

Friday’s news comes two days after the Giants placed punter Riley Dixon and long snapper Casey Kreiter on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Placekicker Graham Gano reportedly tested positive on Tuesday.

The reserve/COVID-19 list includes players who either test positive or are being quarantined due to contact.

The Giants (3-7) have a bye this week and are scheduled to return to game action on Nov. 29 against the Bengals in Cincinnati.

Peart, 23, has played in eight games (one start) this season since being selected by the Giants in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Pettis, 25, joined New York via waiver claim on Nov. 4. He has yet to suit up for the Giants this season after playing in five games with San Francisco in 2020.

Smith, 23, has 14 receptions for 87 yards in 10 games this season. He has 45 catches for 355 yards and three touchdowns in 19 career games with the Giants.
