Portal fears could end Nebraska spring football game

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule says he just might pull the plug on his team’s traditional spring game.

And while the fervent faithful in Lincoln, Neb., likely would be devastated if Rhule follows through, the third-year coach said it might be necessary to keep his program together.

“I don’t know that yet, but I’ll be honest with you. I highly doubt it,” Rhule told reporters Saturday about the likelihood of the Cornhuskers playing the game.

The reason? The transfer portal. He doesn’t want to expose his players to other coaches who might try to pluck them during the spring transfer window.

“The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore,” Rhule said. “It’s just an absolute free open common market. I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world. I don’t want these guys all being able to watch our guys and say, ‘Wow, he looks like a pretty good player. Let’s go get him.’ “

Rhule said he is considering ways to give fans a preseason look at the team without sharing his players with the nation. The spring game last year drew 60,452 fans to Lincoln, and it also was televised on the Big Ten Network.

The spring transfer portal closes April 25. After that, as a ceremonial close to spring practices, Nebraska could invite the fans in.

“I do want to show off our players in some way,” he said. “So what exactly will it be? … I have not worried about anything other than recruiting right now.”

Reports: Nebraska adds veteran coach Dana Holgorsen as consultant

Nebraska is bringing in veteran college coach Dana Holgorsen as a consultant, hoping he can help the Cornhuskers put some points on the scoreboard.

Behind freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola, the Huskers are averaging 23.6 points — tied for 100th in the nation — per game. The offense is 99th nationally in yards gained with an average of 354.1.

Holgorsen, 53, was fired from Houston last November after a 31-28 record in five seasons. He previously was the head coach at West Virginia (2011-18) and posted a 61-41 record.

Earlier this season, Holgorsen served in a scout and consultant role for TCU. He reportedly will remain with Nebraska through the end of the season but could be in line for a job on the Nebraska staff in 2025.

The Huskers (5-4, 2-4 Big Ten) have put up an average of 18.3 points per game in conference play and have lost three in a row.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said he was going to add “outside people” to his circle as the team flounders down the stretch.

“Eighteen points a game. It’s not good enough,” Rhule said Monday.

The Huskers have a bye this week, then will face Southern California in Los Angeles on Nov. 16 and close the season with traditional Big Ten rivals Wisconsin (Nov. 23) and Iowa (Nov. 29).

5-star freshman Dylan Raiola to start at QB for Nebraska

As expected, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule named freshman Dylan Raiola the starting quarterback for the Cornhuskers’ season opener against UTEP on Aug. 31.

The last — and only — true freshman to start at quarterback for Nebraska was Adrian Martinez in 2018. Raiola will be the fourth true freshman in Huskers history to start any game at quarterback, joining Martinez, Tommie Frazier (seven starts in 1992) and Cody Green (two starts in 2009).

Speaking earlier this week on “The Jim Rome Show,” Rhule said Raiola, 19, is the whole package.

“He has tremendous arm talent. He’s big. He’s physical,” Rhule said. “He’s powerful but it’s not ’til he gets here that you truly see what makes him special. He’s a tremendous teammate. He works at it all day long. One of the first guys in the building, one of the last guys to leave. And he’s got humble confidence that exudes from him.”

Raiola bested returning starter Heinrich Haarberg and fellow true freshman Daniel Kaelin to earn the starting job.

Raiola, who played his senior season at Buford High School in Georgia, flipped his commitment from Georgia to Nebraska just before the early signing period last December.

At the time, the five-star recruit was the No. 6 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings. He committed to Ohio State in 2022, decommitted before the end of the year and chose Georgia last May over Nebraska and Southern California.

Raiola became the second highest-rated recruit in Nebraska program history when he signed his national letter of intent.

He is the son of Dominic Raiola, who played center at Nebraska and spent 14 years in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.

Rhule is in his second season at Nebraska, charged with turning around a storied program that hasn’t played in a bowl game since 2016. The Cornhuskers were 5-7 last season.

Reports: Matt Rhule files $5M arbitration suit vs. Panthers

Former Carolina head coach Matt Rhule filed an arbitration lawsuit against the Panthers over $5 million in offset compensation he claims he’s owed, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

Rhule filed the lawsuit on Jan. 25.

Rhule was fired Oct. 10 and was owed $34 million on the rest of his contract, pending a new contract that Rhule might sign with a new team or school. Rhule was later hired by Nebraska on an eight-year, $72 million deal that offset most of what the Panthers owed to Rhule.

At issue, according to CBS Sports, is that the Panthers will contend that Rhule’s contract with Nebraska is backloaded intentionally to get Panthers owner David Tepper to pay Rhule more up-front money on the severance.

Nebraska is set to pay Rhule $5.5 million in Year 1 with escalators that take it to $12.5 million per year.

Rhule reportedly hired New York City litigator John Singer of Singer Deutsch LLP to file the complaint with the NFL.

Rhule was fired by the Panthers after a 1-4 start. He had an 11-27 record in two-plus seasons with the team.

Tepper said Tuesday, during the introduction of new head coach Frank Reich, that he made a “mistake” hiring a “CEO-type head coach” like Rhule.

“With all humility, I could have done better, OK?” Tepper said. “I’m not saying that Rhule wasn’t a good coach. I’m not saying that. Please don’t interpret it that way. I’m saying I could have run a better process last time. I do believe that.”

Matt Rhule officially named head coach at Nebraska

One day after word of negotiations had leaked, Nebraska officially named former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule its new head coach on Saturday morning.

The contract will be for eight seasons, and the school plans to introduce Rhule in a press conference in Lincoln on Monday.

“It is a privilege to welcome coach Matt Rhule, his wife Julie, and their family to Nebraska,” Nebraska Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Trev Alberts said in a statement. “Coach Rhule has created a winning culture throughout his coaching career, and he will provide great leadership for the young men in our football program.

“Matt is detail-oriented, his teams are disciplined and play a physical brand of football. Matt also has the personality and relationship-building skills to build a great staff and excel in recruiting.”

Rhule, who had college success as a head coach at both Temple (28-23 in four seasons) and Baylor (19-20 in three seasons), was fired in October by the Panthers after a 1-4 start. He had an 11-27 record in two-plus seasons with the team.

“It is a tremendous honor to be chosen to lead the Nebraska football program,” Rhule said. “When you think of great, tradition-rich programs in college football Nebraska is right at the top of the list. The fan base is second to none, and I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to coach in Memorial Stadium on Tom Osborne Field.

“My family and I are so grateful to become a part of the Husker Family, and we can’t wait to get started.”

Rhule, 47, was 47-43 in the college ranks with Temple (2013-16) and Baylor (2017-19). At the latter, he was credited with turning around a program that had been decimated by scandal under former coach Art Briles. In Rhule’s final season there, the Bears were 11-3 and played in the Sugar Bowl.

Nebraska is in another once-proud program in desperate need of a turnaround after firing coach Scott Frost as the Cornhuskers started the season at 1-2. Nebraska has won five national championships but none since 1997, when Frost was the quarterback.

Frost was 16-31 in four-plus seasons with Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers haven’t won a bowl game since 2015 and last won 10 games in 2012. They finished this season with a 4-8 record (3-6 Big Ten) after posting a 24-17 win over Iowa on Friday.

Report: Nebraska expected to name Matt Rhule next head coach

Nebraska and former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule are ironing out a deal that will make him the Cornhuskers’ next coach, ESPN reported Friday.

Rhule, who previously coached at Temple and Baylor, was fired in October by the Panthers after a 1-4 start. He had an 11-27 record in two-plus seasons with the team.

In an interview with NFL Network earlier on Tuesday, he said he wanted to coach again.

“It didn’t end the way I wanted it to. But I’m proud I never lost the locker room,” Rhule said. “I’m proud those guys fought and stood up for me til the very end. I hope I get another chance to coach. I’d do some things better football-wise.”

Nebraska is in another once-proud program in desperate need of a turnaround after firing coach Scott Frost as the Huskers started the season at 1-2. Nebraska has won five national championships but none since 1997, when Frost was the quarterback.

Frost was 16-31 in four-plus seasons.

The Cornhuskers haven’t won a bowl game since 2015 and last won 10 games in 2012. They were 3-8 (2-6 Big Ten) entering Friday’s season finale against Iowa.

Panthers fire coach Matt Rhule

The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule on Monday after two-plus seasons and an 11-27 record.

The Panthers are off to a 1-4 start this season after a 37-15 home loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

The team named defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach Steve Wilks interim head coach. Wilks went 3-13 in one year as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. Prior to that, he spent six years as an assistant with the Panthers.

Rhule, 47, was hired ahead of the 2020 season. The Panthers signed him to a seven-year, $62 million deal, paying $6 million to buy him out of his contract at Baylor.

He has four years remaining on his contract.

Front Office Sports in May reported the Panthers were eyeing Sean Payton to be their head coach in 2023.

Report: Panthers to be patient with coach Matt Rhule

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper isn’t looking to make a change at head coach, despite the team’s 0-2 start and Matt Rhule’s 10-25 record since taking the job, NFL Network reported Sunday.

Citing sources, NFL Network said Tepper will be patient but does expect to see improvement — and wins.

Those have been hard to come by. The Panthers have lost nine straight dating back to last season, when they finished 5-12. They also are 1-25 when they allow 17 or more points during the Rhule era.

The Panthers hired Rhule on Jan. 7, 2020, to succeed Ron Rivera as head coach.

Rhule, 47, was the head coach at Baylor and had no NFL head-coaching experience, but the Panthers signed him to a seven-year deal worth $62 million, plus incentives for reaching goals such as postseason wins. He also was given roster control.

The Panthers host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Panthers: Christian McCaffrey unlikely to play in preseason

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey likely won’t play in any preseason games to try to keep him healthy for the 2022 season, coach Matt Rhule said Tuesday.

The Panthers are seeking to find the magic again with McCaffrey, who has been riddled with injuries since his All-Pro season of 2019.

He didn’t play in the preseason in 2021, either, and Rhule said the team is going to have to come up with a wise approach for McCaffrey for the whole season.

“I would hold him out of all the preseason games again,” Rhule said following Tuesday’s voluntary organized team activities. “I think he’s had enough hits on his body. But I think, just as we move forward, we’re gonna have a little bit of a different strategy practice-wise with him.”

McCaffrey played 91 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in 2018.

In 2019, McCaffrey played 93 percent of the Panthers’ offensive snaps and led the NFL with 2,392 yards from scrimmage. Of them, 1,387 were rushing yards, and he ran for 15 touchdowns.

He added 116 catches for 1,005 yards and four touchdowns.

After that season, McCaffrey signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension. And because of a variety of injuries, he’s played in just 10 of 33 games over two seasons, totaling 1,159 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns.

McCaffrey, who turns 26 next month, said Tuesday that he has sought the advice of Marshall Faulk, one of only three players — Roger Craig the other — to tally at least 1,000 receiving and 1,000 rushing yards in the same season.

“Just listening to what he had to say and the different things that he did in the offseason at different points,” McCaffrey said of his conversations with Faulk. “Injuries or not, sometimes you have to change your offseason and your approach.”

Report: Panthers not planning to fire Matt Rhule as coach

The Carolina Panthers plan to keep head coach Matt Rhule for the 2022 season, ESPN reported Saturday.

Sources also told the network that Rhule will begin searching for a new offensive coordinator next week.

Rhule, 46, is 10-22 in two seasons at the helm heading into Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carolina (5-11) started 3-0 this season but takes a six-game losing streak into the finale at Tampa Bay (12-4).

Rhule fired offensive coordinator and play-caller Joe Brady on Dec. 5. Senior offensive assistant Jeff Nixon took over his duties.

Rhule signed a seven-year, $62 million contract in January 2020.
