Chiefs place star G Joe Thuney on IR, activate RB Jerick McKinnon

The Kansas City Chiefs placed All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney on injured reserve Saturday, one day prior to Super Bowl LVIII.

Thuney has a pectoral injury, which also sidelined him for the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens on Jan. 28.

Kansas City also activated running back Jerick McKinnon from injured reserve and elevated nose tackle Mike Pennel from the practice squad ahead of the matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

McKinnon was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report because of a groin injury suffered against the New England Patriots on Dec. 17. He was limited at practice all this week.

Thuney also was listed as questionable for the game prior to Saturday’s development. Nick Allegretti is again expected to fill in for Thuney, a three-time Super Bowl champion.

Thuney, 31, started all 17 regular-season games and Kansas City’s first two playoff games. He was injured in the divisional playoff win at Buffalo on Jan. 21.

In his third season with Kansas City, McKinnon had 21 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown in 12 games and caught four touchdown passes among his 25 receptions for 192 yards.

Isiah Pacheco is the team’s top back. He leads a Kansas City rushing attack that also includes Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

A 2014 third-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings out of Georgia Southern, McKinnon has 2,650 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, to go along with 269 catches for 2,048 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Vikings (2014-17), 49ers (2020) and Chiefs.

McKinnon, 31, missed the 2018-19 seasons with San Francisco after tearing the ACL in his knee during a 2018 preseason game.

Pennel, 32, played in three regular-season games and two postseason games for the Chiefs this season.

Chiefs place RB Jerick McKinnon (groin) on IR

The Kansas City Chiefs placed running back Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve on Sunday.

McKinnon injured a groin during last week’s victory over the New England Patriots. On Saturday, he was ruled out of Monday’s home game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The move requires McKinnon to miss four games, so he is done for the regular season and at least part of the postseason if the Chiefs qualify.

McKinnon, 31, has just 60 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries but has been valuable as a receiver with four touchdown catches. He had 25 receptions for 192 yards.

Main back Isiah Pacheco (team-best 779 yards) is back after a two-game absence due to shoulder surgery.

Kansas City signed practice squad running back La’Mical Perine to the active roster to provide depth at the position. The Chiefs also elevated nose tackle Mike Pennel and receiver Montrell Washington from the practice squad for Monday’s game.

Also, receiver Kadarius Toney (hip) and offensive tackle Donovan Smith (neck) will miss the contest.

Chiefs RB Ronald Jones wants to be released

Running back Ronald Jones took to social media to apparently ask for his release from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jones, 25, has been listed as inactive for every regular-season game with the Chiefs since signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the team in the offseason.

“Sure would like a RELEASE right about now,” Jones wrote Friday night on Twitter.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday.

Jones, 25, has spent the season behind fellow running backs Clyde Edwards-Helaire, rookie Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon on the Chiefs’ depth chart.

Selected by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Jones had 488 carries for 2,174 yards and 18 touchdowns in 55 career games with the Buccaneers. He also had 76 catches for 571 yards and a score.

Chiefs sign RB Jerick McKinnon

The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent running back Jerick McKinnon on Friday.

McKinnon played for the San Francisco 49ers last season and rushed for 319 yards and five touchdowns and caught 33 passes for 253 yards and one score in 16 games (four starts).

McKinnon tore the ACL in his right knee shortly before the 2018 season and missed that campaign as well as the 2019 season.

McKinnon, who turns 29 on Monday, spent his first four seasons (2014-17) with the Minnesota Vikings. He has rushed for 2,237 yards and 12 touchdowns and caught 175 passes for 1,237 yards and six scores in 74 career games (18 starts).
