Report: Chargers to release G Mekhi Becton

The Los Angeles Chargers intend to release guard Mekhi Becton in a cost-cutting move, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

The Chargers would clear $9.7 million in salary cap room by cutting Becton.

Signed to a two-year, $20 million contract last March, Becton battled both injuries and admitted frustration in his first season with Los Angeles. The Chargers also need to replace center Bradley Bozeman, who announced his retirement on Feb. 23.

Becton, 26, appeared in 15 games (14 starts) last season with Los Angeles.

He has started 59 of the 61 career games in which he has played with the Jets (2020-21; 2023), Philadelphia Eagles (2024) and Chargers since being selected by New York with the 11th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was part of a Super Bowl-winning team during his lone season with the Eagles.

Chargers G Mekhi Becton (illness) questionable vs. Chiefs

Los Angeles Chargers right guard Mekhi Becton has been added to the injury report as questionable for Friday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs due to an illness.

Signed to a two-year, $20 million contract in March, Becton is expected to help protect star quarterback Justin Herbert on a team that already lost star left tackle Rashawn Slater to a season-ending knee injury.

Becton, 26, has started 45 of the 46 career games in which he has played with the Jets and Philadelphia Eagles since being selected by New York with the 11th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

If he’s unable to go, Jamaree Salyer, who has appeared in 51 games and started 35 over the last three seasons for the Chargers, is listed as Becton’s backup.

Eagles OG Mekhi Becton to play with cast on injured finger vs. Bucs

Philadelphia Eagles right guard Mekhi Becton said Wednesday that he tore a ligament in his left ring finger in last week’s victory over the New Orleans Saints but will wear a cast and be able to play this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Becton was listed as a limited participant at Wednesday’s practice, which is an estimation because it was a walkthrough.

Also limited was guard Landon Dickerson (wrist), while three standout starters did not participate in right tackle Lane Johnson (concussion) and wide receivers A.J. Brown (hamstring) and DeVonta Smith (concussion).

Becton, 25, started the first three games for the Eagles, who signed him as a free agent on April 28 to a one-year contract worth $2.75 million.

The New York Jets made Becton the 11th overall selection of the 2020 NFL Draft, and the Louisville product started 13 of his 14 games as a rookie. However, a knee injury in Week 1 ended the left tackle’s second season, and Becton moved to right tackle, only to miss all of the 2022 season because of another knee injury.

The 6-foot-7, 363-pound lineman started all 16 games he played in 2023, playing 95 percent of the offensive snaps. The Jets did not pick up the fifth-year option on Becton.

Johnson, 34, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro. He played just 18 snaps in the 15-12 win over the host Saints.

Brown, 27, has missed the past two games due to the hamstring injury. The three-time Pro Bowler made five catches for 119 yards and a touchdown in Philadelphia’s 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 6 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Smith, 25, has 21 catches for 239 yards and one touchdown in starting all three games. He sustained a concussion via a vicious hit from Saints defensive tackle Khristian Boyd.

Smith caught a short pass and his forward progress was stopped. He was being driven backward by two players before Boyd came from behind and blindsided Smith with a helmet-to-helmet hit with 13:45 remaining in the game.

The Eagles (2-1) visit the Buccaneers (2-1) on Sunday afternoon.

Reports: Eagles OL Mekhi Becton injures leg at practice

Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Mekhi Becton exited practice Sunday with an apparent injury to his right leg, according to multiple reports.

Becton, who primarily has played offensive tackle, is competing to start at right guard with Tyler Steen, who was injured during the Eagles’ 14-13 win over the host New England Patriots on Thursday.

The Eagles signed Becton, 25, as a free agent in April to a one-year contract worth $2.75 million.

Eagles add to OT depth with signing of Mekhi Becton

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free agent offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, a former first-round pick of the New York Jets, to a one-year contract, the team announced Monday.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but it is valued at up to $5.5 million, according to multiple media reports.

The Jets made Becton the 11th overall selection of the 2020 NFL Draft, and the Louisville product started 13 of his 14 games as a rookie. However, a knee injury in Week 1 ended the left tackle’s second season, and Becton moved to right tackle, only to miss all of the 2022 season because of another knee injury.

The Eagles, who did not select an offensive tackle in last weekend’s draft, add depth to the roster at the position behind starting left tackle Jordan Mailata and right tackle Lane Johnson. Backup Jack Driscoll signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins.

Reports: Jets OT Mekhi Becton (ankle) having MRI

New York Jets starting left tackle Mekhi Becton is having an MRI on the ankle he injured in Sunday’s game but there’s optimism that it’s not as bad as originally thought, NFL Network and ESPN reported Monday.

The diagnosis is that Becton suffered a high-ankle sprain in the loss at Buffalo, per the reports.

Becton, 24, was carted off the field with the right ankle injury late in the first quarter. He was replaced by rookie Carter Warren, who made his NFL debut. Warren was the 13th OL used by the Jets this season, according to NFL Network.

Becton had started every game this season after missing the entire 2022 season and all but one game in 2021 after knee surgeries.

The Jets’ O-line has been decimated with injuries. Alijah Vera-Tucker (Achilles), Connor McGovern (knee) and Wes Schweitzer (calf) are all currently on injured reserve. Duane Brown is eligible to return from IR and the Jets have until Thursday to activate him or lose him for the rest of the season.

The Jets (4-6) play the Miami Dolphins (7-3) in the inaugural Black Friday game on Friday afternoon.

Jets T Mekhi Becton (knee) likely out for 2022 season

The knee injury sustained in practice by New York Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton likely will keep him out for the entire 2022 season, coach Robert Saleh confirmed Tuesday.

He was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture of the right kneecap, NFL Network reported. Saleh said Becton will get a second opinion on Wednesday.

On Monday, Saleh said a preliminary exam showed that Becton’s knee was stable and “doesn’t seem like a big deal.” Tests run on the knee of the 2020 first-round draft pick proved otherwise, though.

The 6-foot-7, 363-pound Becton, 23, was activated from the physically unable to perform list when the Jets opened training camp last month in Florham Park, N.J.

He sustained a dislocated right kneecap and MCL sprain in Week 1 of 2021 and missed the rest of the season.

Saleh said Becton had worked hard to return from last season’s injury and that he expects he’ll come back to camp next summer, recovered and ready to prove why the Jets selected him No. 11 overall.

“We love Mekhi. We appreciate everything he’s done,” Saleh said. “His ride is not over. His story is not over. He’s got (the) full support of this organization.”

As a rookie, Becton started 13 of 14 games at left tackle. The Jets were moving him to right tackle for this season, with George Fant on the left side.

The Jets will host the Baltimore Ravens to open the season on Sept. 11.

Report: Jets OL Mekhi Becton leaves practice early

New York Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton limped off the practice field Monday with an apparent knee injury, ESPN reported.

The 2020 first-round draft pick had his right knee surgically repaired after suffering a dislocated kneecap and MCL sprain in the 2021 season opener. He missed the rest of the season.

Becton, 23, was activated from the physically unable to perform list when the Jets opened training camp last month in Florham Park, N.J.

The Jets selected Becton No. 11 overall in 2020 and he went on to start 13 of 14 games at left tackle in his rookie season. He is moving to right tackle this season, with George Fant on the left side.

Jets move Mekhi Becton to RT

The New York Jets officially moved Mekhi Becton to right tackle on Wednesday, opting to keep George Fant at left tackle — the position he took over in 2021 after Becton was injured.

Becton, 23, sustained a dislocated right kneecap and MCL sprain in Week 1 of the 2021 season. He struggled to recover and it ultimately ended his season. In stepped Fant, who played well on the blind side.

“George feels much more comfortable on the left side,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday. “He’s got the athleticism to play the left side, as does Becton. It was just a better combination.”

The Jets selected Becton No. 11 overall in the 2020 draft and he went on to start 13 of 14 games at left tackle in his rookie season.

“Whether it’s left or right, I don’t really care as long as I’m on the field,” Becton said.

The Jets activated Becton from the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday as they opened camp in Florham Park, N.J.

Becton reportedly ballooned to nearly 400 pounds while injured. But the Jets listed him at 363 pounds in a news release Tuesday and he looked noticeably trimmer on Wednesday.

“I’m not going to get too much into the weight, but he got himself into football shape,” Saleh said. “He’s a gifted athlete, a gifted man. I’m really excited about the direction he’s going.”

The Jets signed the 30-year-old Fant to a three-year, $27.3 million contract in April 2020.

Jets LT Mekhi Becton (knee) carted to locker room

New York Jets starting left tackle Mekhi Becton was carted off the field after a knee injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s season opener at Carolina.

The Jets said the 2020 first-round draft pick was doubtful to return.

Becton, 22, was injured on the same play that rookie quarterback Zach Wilson tossed his first NFL touchdown pass, a 22-yarder to Corey Davis with 1:35 left in the third quarter.

Players took a knee on the field as trainers and head coach Robert Saleh attended to Becton, who limped off the field with assistance before being loaded onto a cart.

Becton started 13 of his 14 games as a rookie in 2020.
