Wisconsin starter Billy Edwards Jr. leaves game vs. Miami (Ohio) with injury

Wisconsin starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., making his debut Thursday night after transferring from Maryland, left midway through the second quarter of the nonconference opener against Miami (Ohio) with a lower-body injury and will not return.

Edwards, who passed for 2,881 yards and 15 touchdowns last season as the starter at Maryland, completed 6 of 13 passes for 68 yards before the injury.

Sophomore Danny O’Neil, a transfer from San Diego State, replaced Edwards.

Wisconsin led 3-0 at the half.

Northwestern attempts to snap skid vs. Miami (Ohio)

Northwestern believes it has as good a shot as any to finish atop the West Division in the Big Ten Conference.

The Wildcats will try to continue working toward that long-range goal when they host Miami (Ohio) in their final nonconference game on Saturday night in Evanston, Ill.

Northwestern (1-2) has opened the season with three straight games that ended in one-possession differences, winning the first 31-28 against Nebraska in Dublin, Ireland. However, a 31-23 loss to Duke and a 31-24 setback against Southern Illinois have stifled momentum.

“We can choose to be whatever we want to be,” Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald said. “We could be a team that achieves goals and fights and learns from these things, or you can go the other way, and the other way is not the alternative that we’re going to allow. So the pedal will be down.”

Northwestern quarterback Ryan Hilinski threw for 435 yards against Duke two weeks ago and running back Evan Hull leads the nation with an average of 217.3 all-purpose yards per game, but Fitzgerald was disappointed with how the offense performed in the loss to Southern Illinois last week.

“We just seemed to have way too much inconsistency offensively with ball security, our inability to kind of hit explosives like we had been through the first couple weeks,” Fitzgerald said.

Miami (1-2) will be trying to bounce back after giving up 31 unanswered points in a 38-17 loss to Cincinnati last week.

It was the RedHawks’ 16th consecutive loss against the Bearcats.

“We’re not a good team yet,” Miami coach Chuck Martin said on Monday.

RedHawks quarterback Aveon Smith will make his third straight start in place of Brett Gabbert, a third-team All-Mid-American Conference pick last season who has an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. Gabbert likely will be sidelined the rest of the season.

Smith was 9-for-21 for 116 yards with two touchdowns and an interception against Cincinnati.

“‘AV’ continues to grow,” Martin said. “With a new starting quarterback, the package shrinks down a little bit, but his execution is getting better. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Miami (OH) tops North Texas in Frisco Football Classic

Brett Gabbert passed for 228 yards and two touchdowns as Miami (Ohio) dominated the final two and a half quarters in a 27-14 win over North Texas on Thursday afternoon in the Frisco Football Classic in the north Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas.

The victory assured the RedHawks (7-6) its third straight winning season and was the first bowl win for Miami in 11 years.

Jack Sorenson caught seven passes for 116 yards for Miami, while Kenny Tracy (92 yards) and Keyon Mozee (77) combined for 169 yards on the ground on 23 carries.

North Texas (6-7) was looking for its first bowl win since it beat UNLV in the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Mean Green is now 0-5 in the postseason under coach Seth Littrell.

North Texas was without No. 1 running back DeAndre Torrey, who ran for 1,215 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. The Mean Green was held to just 89 yards on the ground after averaging almost 246 yards per game over its previous 12 contests.

Austin Aune passed for 228 yards with two interceptions for the Mean Green, which had a five-game winning streak snapped.

The RedHawks got on the board first with a 48-yard field goal by Graham Nicholson at the 12:27 mark of the first quarter. North Texas responded on the ensuing drive with a 1-yard scoring run by Isaiah Johnson that capped a 12-play, 75-yard march to earn a 7-3 lead.

Miami moved back to the front via its own 75-yard drive, ending with an 8-yard TD run from Tracy. But the Mean Green answered again, this time on 2-yard read-option touchdown run from Aune that produced a 14-10 advantage 3 1/2 minutes into the second quarter.

The rest of the half belonged to the RedHawks, with Nicholson booting a 36-yard FG with 6:52 to play until halftime. Then, after an interception of Aune by John Saunders Jr., Miami moved 30 yards in four plays to Gabbert’s 5-yard TD pass to Kevin Davis that gave the RedHawks a 20-14 lead at intermission.

Miami added to its lead early in the third quarter on an 11-yard hookup from Gabbert to Nate Muersch. The RedHawks’ defense did the rest, holding North Texas to just 69 yards of total offense in the second half.
