Veteran RB Mike Davis retires

Mike Davis, who suited up as a running back for six teams across eight NFL seasons, announced his retirement on Monday.

Davis, who did not play in 2023, took to social media with a message of gratitude on his 31st birthday.

“As I turn 31 today, I sit back and look on my NFL career and how thankful I am to be apart of a brotherhood,” he wrote. “This game has allowed me to make a lot of friends and memories. I’m grateful for every organization in NFL. With that being said I’m retiring!”

Davis broke into the league as a fourth-round draft pick in 2015 by the San Francisco 49ers.

In 87 career games (30 starts) for the Niners (2015-16), Seattle Seahawks (2017-18), Chicago Bears (2019), Carolina Panthers (2019-20), Atlanta Falcons (2021) and Baltimore Ravens (2022), Davis amassed 2,052 yards on 3.7 yards per carry with 14 touchdowns. He also collected 171 receptions for 1,066 yards and four receiving touchdowns.

He started 12 games for the Panthers in 2020 (15 total appearances) and posted career bests of 642 rushing yards, six touchdowns, 59 catches, 373 yards and two touchdown receptions.

Report: Ravens to activate RB J.K. Dobbins off IR

The Baltimore Ravens are expected to activate J.K. Dobbins off injured reserve and waive fellow running back Mike Davis, ESPN reported on Saturday.

Dobbins, 23, would be in line to play in Sunday’s game against the host Pittsburgh Steelers. The game would be his first in nearly two months since he underwent knee surgery in October to clear out the scar tissue that resulted from a prior surgery.

As a rookie in 2020, Dobbins carried the ball 134 times for 805 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games. He added 120 receiving yards.

He missed all of 2021 with a knee injury sustained in the final preseason game last year.

Dobbins returned in Week 3 and appeared in four games before going on injured reserve. He has rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 35 touches this season. He added a receiving touchdown.

Davis, 29, has eight carries for 18 yards and two catches for four yards in eight games this season.

Report: Ravens signing veteran RB Mike Davis

The Baltimore Ravens are signing free agent running back Mike Davis, ESPN reported Tuesday.

The Atlanta Falcons released the 29-year-old veteran last week to save $2.5 million against the salary cap.

Davis rushed for 503 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games (eight starts) for the Falcons in 2021. He also caught 44 passes for 259 yards and a score.

Davis has rushed for 2,034 yards and 14 TDs in 79 games (30 starts) for five different teams. He started his career with the San Francisco 49ers after they selected him in the fourth round of the 2015 draft.

In Baltimore, he adds experience and depth to a position that dealt with season-ending knee injuries to J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards in 2021.

The Ravens’ leading rusher in each of the past three seasons was quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Former Raiders DB Mike Davis dies at 65

Former Raiders defensive back Mike Davis has died at the age of 65, the team announced.

“The Raiders Family is deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Davis,” the team said in a statement. The Raiders did not disclose any details of his passing.

Davis owns one of the franchise highlights, a game-clinching interception at the end of a 14-12 win in an AFC Divisional playoff game against the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 4, 1981.

The Raiders went on to win the AFC Championship and Super Bowl XV.

“Mike was a beloved teammate, friend and cherished part of our family,” the Raiders statement added. “The thoughts and prayers of the Raider Nation are with Mike’s family: Mary, Mike Jr. and Allen. Mike will forever be in our hearts and minds.”

Davis was a second-round draft pick of the Raiders in 1977 and spent his first eight seasons with the team, which included winning Super Bowl XVIII after the 1983 season.

In 115 career games (83 starts), Davis had 11 interceptions, 12 fumble recoveries and 11 sacks.

He finished his nine-year career playing eight games with the San Diego Chargers in 1987.

Report: Falcons add RB Mike Davis to boost offense

The Atlanta Falcons are signing running back Mike Davis to a two-year contract, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

His deal reportedly is worth $5.5 million, with $3 million guaranteed in the first year.

Davis, 28, played in 15 games for the Carolina Panthers last season, starting a dozen games in place of injured All-Pro Christian McCaffrey. He ran for 642 yards and six touchdowns, adding 373 receiving yards on 59 catches and two scores.

An Atlanta native, Davis was selected by the 49ers in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft and played two seasons in San Francisco, then with the Seattle Seahawks (2017-18), Chicago Bears (2019) and Panthers (2019-20).

He has 1,531 career rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

Todd Gurley was the Falcons’ leading rusher in 2020, gaining 678 yards. He signed a one-year deal with Atlanta before last season and now is a free agent.

The Falcons were 27th in the league in rushing yards last season and 28th in rushing first downs.

Multiple outlets also reported the Falcons are signing former first-round pick Barkevious Mingo, 30, to a one-year deal to provide depth at linebacker and special teams. The deal reportedly includes a $175,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $1.075 million.

The No. 6 overall pick in 2013, Mingo is well-traveled, playing his first three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, then one season each with New England, Indianapolis, Seattle, Houston and Chicago.

In 126 career games, he has 255 tackles, 12.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries, one interception and 16 passes defensed.

Panthers RB McCaffrey doubtful to play vs. Packers

Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey is listed as doubtful for this weekend’s game against the Green Bay Packers, the team announced Thursday.

The quad injury will prevent McCaffrey from playing for the second consecutive week for the Panthers (4-9), who visit the Packers (10-3) at Lambeau Field. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Mike Davis will once again be expected to handle the majority of the carries for Carolina. Davis leads the team in carries (137) and rushing yards (555), while his five rushing touchdowns are tied with McCaffrey.

McCaffrey, who sat out the Panthers’ 32-27 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, has been mired in an injury-riddled season in 2020.

The 24-year-old sustained an ankle injury in Week 2 that forced him to miss six games. He then injured his shoulder in his return to the field in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

A season after gaining more than 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving, McCaffrey has just 225 yards rushing in his three games this season with 17 catches for 149 yards.

Prior to this season, McCaffrey played in all 48 games since being selected by the Panthers with the eighth overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Panthers also listed offensive lineman Dennis Daley (concussion) as doubtful. Offensive tackle Russell Okung (calf) and wide receiver Curtis Samuel (hamstring) were listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.
