Report: Steelers stiff-arm Bears’ pursuit of Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers rebuffed the Chicago Bears’ attempt to discuss a potential trade for longtime head coach Mike Tomlin, ESPN reported Saturday.

At least one other team also explored trying to acquire Tomlin, only to be informed that he has a no-trade clause in his contract, per the report.

Tomlin, 52, signed a three-year extension last June and confirmed earlier this week that he intends to be on the Steelers’ sideline for a 19th season in 2025.

“Save your time,” Tomlin said Tuesday when asked about reports that teams are kicking the tires on acquiring him this offseason.

Currently the NFL’s longest-tenured coach, Tomlin has compiled a 183-107-2 record since taking over in 2007. The Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII in his second season but haven’t won a playoff game since the 2016 campaign.

Pittsburgh’s 2024 season ended with a five-game losing streak, capped by a 28-14 wild-card loss at rival Baltimore last weekend.

The Bears have cast a wide net in their search for a head coach, including an interview with interim coach Thomas Brown. Other names linked to the vacancy include former NFL head coaches Pete Carroll, Mike McCarthy, Ron Rivera and coordinators Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson, Mike Kafka, Todd Monken, Drew Petzing and Anthony Weaver.

Steelers WR George Pickens reveals Russell Wilson to start vs. Jets

Mike Tomlin still hasn’t revealed a decision, but it appears the Pittsburgh Steelers are ready to give Russell Wilson his first start at quarterback Sunday night against the New York Jets.

Wide receiver George Pickens spoke with reporters Friday afternoon and was asked how he was doing working with Wilson, who missed the first part of the season with a calf injury.

“(We’re) getting on the same page after practice throwing — more than usual because, you know, this is his first start,” Pickens said Friday.

Tomlin, the Steelers’ longtime coach, has kept his quarterback plans close to the vest after Justin Fields led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start.

Wilson, who was active last week and served as Fields’ backup in a blowout win over the Las Vegas Raiders, was not listed on the injury report this week. Reporters found out from offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr. that Wilson was taking at least some of the first-team reps.

Fields spoke to reporters Thursday and sounded like a man who believed he had lost the starting job.

“I don’t think I played good enough, if I’m being real with you,” Fields said. “If I’m being real with myself, I think if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of (question of) who should be playing, who should not.

“At the end of the day, (we) got a few wins. Of course, I’m glad about that, but there’s areas that I could be better at and I’m just going to continue to work on those and continue to get better.”

Fields and Wilson competed for the starting job in training camp, when the latter was bothered by a calf injury. Tomlin made Wilson the QB1 at the end of the preseason, but Wilson’s leg injury crept up before Week 1 and he was inactive for the first five games.

Wilson was a Super Bowl champion with Seattle and came to Pittsburgh on a one-year, veteran-minimum contract after two underwhelming seasons in Denver.

Steelers coach: Russell Wilson to practice fully Wednesday

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson will be a full participant in practice on Wednesday, coach Mike Tomlin announced.

Wilson has been inactive for the Steelers’ first five games of the season as he works his way back from a strained calf that he sustained in training camp.

“We’re in a little bit different place as I stand here today with Russ,” Tomlin said on Tuesday. “Tomorrow will be the first Wednesday that he’ll be a scheduled full participant, we’ll see where that leads us. First, we’ll see if he’s, obviously, able to pull it off and get through the session. And if he does, what (does) the quality of that work look like? The ability to protect himself, etc. — some of the conversations that we’ve been having, but having more in a hypothetical way.

“He’s at the point of health now where we can work on a Wednesday without restrictions. And so, we’ll do so.”

Tomlin noted that quarterback Justin Fields will continue to take first-team practice snaps, however.

“(Wilson will) get reps with the second unit as to not disrupt Justin’s preparation,” Tomlin said. “And then we’ll see where all of that leads us as we push through the week.”

Wilson, 35, was named the starter following the final preseason game in August but was limited in practice before the Week 1 opener at Atlanta. His status did not change from there, with Fields leading the Steelers to three wins to open the season before the team dropped its last two games.

Pittsburgh (3-2) visits the Las Vegas Raiders (2-3) on Sunday.

A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Wilson last started a game on Christmas Eve before the Denver Broncos benched him for the final two 2023 regular-season games in a contract dispute that led to the former Super Bowl winner being released. He signed with the Steelers in March after also visiting the New York Giants.

Fields, 25, has completed a career-high 67.6 percent of his passes for 961 yards with five touchdowns and one interception in five starts. He has rushed for 172 yards and three scores.

Coach: ‘No need’ to name Justin Fields Steelers’ long-term starter yet

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of five 3-0 teams in the NFL, but their quarterback situation remains up for discussion.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin indicated the team will “have a decision to make” when Russell Wilson recovers from a calf injury and becomes available for the first-string job again.

Justin Fields has helped Pittsburgh start undefeated, but close wins over the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers weren’t enough for him to get a long-term vote of confidence from Tomlin.

Asked Tuesday why he has yet to name Fields the team’s permanent starter, Tomlin replied, “Because there’s no need.” He said Fields will enter the building Wednesday with the mindset that he’s the starter — for Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts (1-2), anyway.

“Sometimes in this business, man, there’s a myriad of complex decisions that need to be made,” Tomlin said. “I’ve learned to make ‘em when it’s appropriate and it’s not necessary as we sit here right now. When Russ gets to an appropriate point of health and we have a decision to make, I’ll make it and I’ll announce it and I’ll be really transparent about it, but until then, I don’t care how many ways you guys ask me, I got no intentions of making the decision that’s unnecessary at this juncture.”

Fields has completed 73.3 percent of his passes this year for 518 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. He’s been sacked six times but also has rushed for 90 yards and a score.

Both Fields and Wilson were acquired by Pittsburgh in the offseason, the former in a trade with the Chicago Bears and the latter as a free agent on a one-year contract.

Steelers name Russell Wilson starting QB over Justin Fields

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson will start for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they open the season Sept. 8 on the road against the Atlanta Falcons, coach Mike Tomlin announced Wednesday.

Wilson, who led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl title a decade ago, had been locked in a battle with fourth-year QB Justin Fields. While Tomlin had said for months that Wilson was the leader for the job, a calf injury Wilson sustained early in training camp gave coaches a longer look at Fields with the first team.

“I met with both quarterbacks here just a few minutes ago after practice and I informed them that Russ is QB 1 going into Week 1,” Tomlin said Wednesday. “It was a difficult decision but not difficult in a negative way. To be quite honest with you, it was difficult in a positive way. This decision was difficult because of what they’re capable of doing. The decision was difficult because of how they conducted themselves as opposed to the things that they fall short in in terms of capabilities or negative conduct.”

Veteran Kyle Allen also is on the roster and third on the depth chart.

The Steelers, seeking an upgrade from last season’s starter, Kenny Pickett, acquired both Wilson and Fields in March. Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wilson, 35, was named to the Pro Bowl in nine of his 10 seasons (2012-21) with the Seahawks. Traded to the Denver Broncos before the 2022 season in a blockbuster deal, Wilson was 11-19 as a starter with Denver and released earlier this year.

In 188 career starts, Wilson has posted a 115-72-1 record. He’s thrown for 43,653 yards and 334 touchdowns to go with 106 interceptions and has engineered 39 game-winning drives.

He has run for 5,307 yards and added 29 touchdowns.

Fields was the No. 11 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Bears, but Chicago decided to move on from the 25-year-old after three seasons.

Fields, 25, has a 10-28-0 record in 40 games (38 starts) and has through for 6,674 yards with 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He’s added 14 rushing scores.

Mike Tomlin: Russell Wilson has ‘pole position’ for Steelers’ No. 1 QB

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has two starter-quality quarterbacks on his roster, but only one can start.

Tomlin offered some insight Sunday on newcomers Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, Tomlin’s potential starters after the team traded Kenny Pickett.

“We’ve been very transparent about the pecking order, at least to start,” Tomlin told reporters at the NFL’s league meetings in Orlando, Fla. “I just think that provides clarity for all parties involved.”

That clarity indicates Wilson, 35, has the inside track after a roller-coaster two years with the Denver Broncos.

“Russell is a veteran, man,” Tomlin said. “He’s got a proven process of readiness. He’s been in this league a long time, and he’s capable of rallying troops, receivers, tight ends and running backs.”

Tomlin said Wilson, who reached two Super Bowls with the Seattle Seahawks, winning one, has a grasp of how to cultivate leadership over an extended amount of time — something that will provide a benefit for Fields as the quarterbacks “do some of the informal things at this time of the year.”

Fields, 25, threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 games last season for the Chicago Bears. He added 657 rushing yards and four scores.

He was traded to the Steelers this offseason in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2025 that could become a fourth-rounder if certain parameters are met.

Tomlin stopped short of calling Wilson his Week 1 starter.

“Rest assured, when it’s time to compete, Justin will (be) given an opportunity to compete,” he said, “and we’ll allow those guys to sort themselves out. But I thought it was appropriate to describe it in a way for when we get started. Russell’s in pole position, and I think his body of work justifies that.

“And just from my conversations with Justin, he is excited about working alongside Russell and learning some of those veteran tricks of the trade from … a guy who has been around for over a decade.”

The Steelers finished 10-7 last season, losing 31-17 to the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card playoff round.

Steelers QB Justin Fields ‘ready for this next chapter’

Justin Fields said goodbye to Chicago following his trade from the Bears to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.

“Can’t say thank you enough to the city of Chicago for taking me in and embracing me,” Fields posted on social media. “Thank you to the entire Bears organization and ownership for allowing me the opportunity to be part of such a historic franchise. But most of all thank you to my all my brothers that I played with. You all were the reason I attacked each day the way I did. I can’t thank you all enough for what y’all have meant to me over the last 3 years through the ups and downs. I wish each one of you nothing but success. Ready for this next chapter!”

The next chapter apparently will be as the backup to veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. The Steelers have seen an overhaul of their quarterback room, with Wilson signing a one-year deal, former starter Kenny Pickett being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, Mitchell Trubisky returning to the Buffalo Bills, longtime backup Mason Rudolph signing as a free agent with the Tennessee Titans and the acquisition of Fields for a conditional sixth-round draft pick.

That pick could become a fourth-rounder if Fields plays at least 50 percent of the snaps for Pittsburgh.

Reports Sunday indicated Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin reached out to both Wilson and Fields as the deal was closed on Saturday to let them know Wilson currently stands as the starter and Fields as QB2.

For his part, Wilson welcomed Fields on social media.

“Let’s get it @justnfields! QB room bout to be (three fire emojis),” he wrote.

Only 25, Fields threw for 2,562 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 starts in 2023.

He completed 61.4 percent of his throws and rushed for 657 yards and four touchdowns. Fields suffered a right thumb injury and missed four games last season for the 7-10 Bears.

The Bears selected him No. 11 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The deal opens the door for Chicago to draft a quarterback, widely expected to be Southern California’s Caleb Williams, with the No. 1 overall selection.

Steelers’ Mike Tomlin returns, plans offensive coordinator change

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is returning in the same position in 2024 but is “looking at all components of staffing” to begin the offseason.

“I coach football. That’s what I do. I’m respectful of the position as a whole,” Tomlin said on Thursday. “I have no sense of entitlement for what I do. I try to earn it daily. I don’t ponder a lot of things, I’m appreciate of things daily and I try to work with urgency daily. I’m also on (the) go.

“I’m going to keep coming to work. I don’t spend a lot of time from a big-picture perspective, I just don’t.”

Tomlin said he would hire a new offensive coordinator and felt it was “appropriate” to look outside the organization. He said being in the final year of his contract wasn’t a concern — “security is cool, I’m not job-scared” — but the matter likely will be important because the team is hiring an offensive coordinator who will want assurances of being more than a one-year stopgap.

“I want to be versatile and dynamic. I want to score more points. I want to utilize all of our talent,” Tomlin said. “Certainly, I’m open to learning through this process.”

The Steelers are “disappointed” and Tomlin said assessing the why was a task he was taking on this week.

“I’m not looking to seek comfort. We wanted to be world champs. The tournament is ongoing and we’re not it,” Tomlin said. “I’m not worried about checking boxes.”

Offseason agenda items are front and center for Tomlin, whose streak of not advancing in the playoffs is at seven years.

Tomlin said it turns his stomach to be making plans for traveling to scouting missions such as the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

“It sucks, it all sucks. Not degrees of suck,” Tomlin said. “I’d rather be working. I want confetti for this group.”

Among a number of Steelers free agents, Tomlin endorsed bringing back quarterback Mason Rudolph. He also said he met with Kenny Pickett on Thursday morning and made clear it is a “huge year for him” with a competition expected for the starting role in the offseason and training camp.

Rudolph started even after Pickett returned from December ankle surgery, including the Steelers’ playoff loss at Buffalo. Tomlin said he congratulated Rudolph for being ready when his opportunity came late in the regular season.

“There’s a fine line between being a Pro Bowler and a backup in this business. It’s our job as professionals to be ready, to let your talents show. He did those things,” Tomlin said.

Report: Mike Tomlin tells Steelers he’ll coach in 2024

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told his players Tuesday he plans to lead the team in 2024, NFL Network reported.

At a team meeting the day after a 31-17 wild-card loss at the Buffalo Bills, Tomlin reportedly said the speculation about him stepping away after 17 seasons is unfounded.

Tomlin, 51, is entering the final season of his contract. He quickly stepped away from his postgame press conference Monday when asked about his contract situation.

With this month’s breakup of Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, Tomlin is now the NFL’s longest-tenured coach. He has compiled a 173-100-2 record in the regular since taking over in 2007 and has never had a losing season.

Pittsburgh finished 10-7 in 2023 and made the playoffs for the 11th time under Tomlin, who guided the Steelers to a victory in Super Bowl XLIII after the 2008 season.

Tomlin is expected to address the media later this week, per NFL Network.

Steelers QB Kenny Pickett (knee) will return to practice

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett has a bone bruise but will participate in practice on Wednesday, coach Mike Tomlin said.

Tomlin confirmed reports that a left knee injury Pickett sustained during a third-quarter sack in Sunday’s 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans was a bone bruise in his Tuesday news conference.

“Kenny is scheduled for some level of participation tomorrow and then proceed from there — obviously his functionality and comfort being the guide,” Tomlin said. He added that he will judge Pickett’s “quality of work” before deciding if he will play Sunday in an AFC North clash against the Baltimore Ravens.

If he sits out Sunday against the Ravens (3-1), Pickett would have another week to recover. The Steelers (2-2) have a Week 6 bye before playing at the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 22.

Mitch Trubisky likely would start if Pickett is unavailable.

Tomlin also discussed the state of the Steelers’ offense, which has scored just 62 points over the first four games. Pickett, in his second season as the Pittsburgh starter, has thrown for 803 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Despite calls from fans to dismiss offensive coordinator Matt Canada, Tomlin said “at this juncture,” he has no plans to change coordinators or play callers.
