Texans QB C.J. Stroud (concussion) could miss game vs. Titans

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that rookie sensation quarterback C.J. Stroud was diagnosed with a concussion, stemming from a hit during Sunday’s 30-6 loss to the New York Jets.

Stroud was the recipient of a blow from New York defensive tackle Quinnen Williams after throwing a pass in the fourth quarter. His head snapped as he hit the ground.

“C.J. is still in the concussion protocol,” Ryans said. “We’ll see how he goes throughout the week and hopefully he continues to feel better.”

Ryans wasn’t optimistic that Stroud could play in this Sunday’s road game against the Tennessee Titans. He indicated the team will be cautious with Stroud, the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft.

“Yeah, we’ll see as he goes throughout the week, we’ll see how he progresses throughout the concussion protocol and that just has to run its course,” Ryans said. “I don’t think many guys have came back the following week after a concussion. You have to make sure at the end of the day that no matter the position, no matter who the guy is, you have to make sure that your guys are healthy and we’re protecting guys and their right when it comes to the concussion or the head injuries. We have to make sure we’re protecting all of our guys.

“It’s more about their long-term health, as opposed to, just everybody gets excited about the next game and the next opportunity, but we care about these guys as men off the field and making sure that their health is the utmost importance to us.”

Williams commented on social media to say there was no ill intent.

“I pray CJ is ok, everyone know I’m not a dirty player or trying to hurt a great, Elite QB like him or any player in the league,” Williams said. “I play hard and I play fair. Again I pray CJ is ok and wish him nothing but the best.”

Stroud, 22, leads the NFL with 3,631 yards despite throwing for a season-low 91 against the Jets. He has 20 scoring passes and been intercepted five times.

Davis Mills and Case Keenum are the starter options if Stroud isn’t available against the Titans. Mills, 25, was 1 of 5 for 4 yards after replacing Stroud against the Jets and has a 5-19-1 career record as a starter. Keenum, 35, is 29-35 as an NFL starter.

“We’ll see where we end up throughout the week,” Ryans said. “Both guys have played a lot of football, and at this point and where we are, we just want guys who are going to put us in a position to win football games. Who can we count on to help us win football games? And that’s how we’ll decide.”

Reports: Texans to start QB Davis Mills vs Cowboys

Davis Mills returns to the starting role on Sunday when the Houston Texans visit the Dallas Cowboys.

According to reports, Mills was informed of the decision after watching Kyle Allen start the past two games at quarterback. Allen had two touchdown passes, four interceptions and was sacked five times. The Texans (1-10-1) generated 29 total points in losses to the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins and enter Week 14 with a seven-game losing streak.

The Texans have eight total touchdowns in the past six games; Dallas (9-3) scored eight times (four rushing, three passing, one return) last week.

Allen threw a pick-6 and fumbled as two of his five turnovers in the past two games were turned into defensive touchdowns.

The Texans have the top waiver priority but did not claim Baker Mayfield on Tuesday. He was waived by the Carolina Panthers on Monday and claimed by the Los Angeles Rams, who placed Matthew Stafford on injured reserve with a spinal contusion.

Mills, 24, has 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season. The former third-round pick was benched after Houston’s 23-10 loss to the Washington Commanders on Nov. 20.

In 23 career games, Mills has compiled 4,808 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

Lovie Smith gives Davis Mills vote of confidence as Texans QB

The Houston Texans are standing by Davis Mills as their starting quarterback, coach Lovie Smith told reporters Monday.

The Texans (0-3-1) are the last winless team in the NFL after Sunday’s 34-24 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Mills went 26-for-35 passing in that game for 246 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions.

The Texans fell behind 27-7 by halftime but outscored the Chargers 17-7 in the second half as a rally fell short.

“We’re not making a change at the quarterback position,” Smith said. “We all need to do better. You know who was our quarterback to possibly take the lead at the end? It was Davis Mills. He’s our quarterback.”

Mills was a third-round draft pick in 2021 and eventually won the starting job from Tyrod Taylor, while Deshaun Watson sat out the season amid his numerous sexual misconduct lawsuits.

Mills finished his rookie season with 2,664 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a 66.8 completion percentage. In four starts so far this year, he has amassed 908 yards, five touchdowns and four picks with a 62 percent completion rate.

Kyle Allen is the No. 2 quarterback on Houston’s depth chart.

The Texans visit the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5, and after a Week 6 bye, they hit the road again to face the Las Vegas Raiders, who just snapped their 0-3 start to the season with their first victory.

Eight inductees were named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Thursday, including former Green Bay Packers safety LeRoy Butler, ex-San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Bryant Young and late New Orleans linebacker Sam Mills.

Others named to the Hall of Fame from the NFL Honors celebration at Los Angeles included late Raiders wide receiver Cliff Branch, New England Patriots and Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour, Jacksonville Jaguars tackle Tony Boselli, Super Bowl-winning head coach Dick Vermeil and former referee and director of officiating Art McNally.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony is set for Aug. 6 at Canton, Ohio.

Butler played 181 games over 12 seasons as a second-round draft pick out of Florida State. He led the Packers in interceptions five times and picked off 38 passes in his career.

Young played 208 games over 14 seasons, all with the 49ers. The first-round pick in 1994 out of Notre Dame was named to the Pro Bowl four times. Bryant had 89.5 sacks in his career.

Mills, who died from cancer in 2005 at the age of 45, played the first nine seasons of his 12-year career in New Orleans. He finished with the Carolina Panthers and totaled 1,265 tackles with 20.5 sacks and 11 interceptions.

Branch, who died in 2019 at age 71, was a three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time Pro Bowler. He had 501 career receptions for 8,685 yards and 67 touchdowns.

Seymour, who played 164 games over 12 seasons, was the sixth overall draft pick in 2001 out of Georgia. He had 57.5 career sacks and was on seven Patriots teams that won at least 10 games.

Boselli played 91 games over seven seasons after he was a No. 2 overall draft pick by the Jaguars in 1995 out of Southern California. A first-team All-Pro in three consecutive seasons, Boselli helped the Jaguars to the AFC Championship Game in his second NFL season.

Vermeil led the St. Louis Rams to the Super Bowl title after the 1999 season. As coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, the Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs, he went 120-109 in 15 NFL seasons.

Texans won’t name starting QB for Week 14

Houston Texans coach David Culley on Monday held off on naming a starting quarterback for Week 14 after benching Tyrod Taylor during Sunday’s shutout loss.

Taylor injured his wrist in the third quarter against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday but could have returned, Culley said. He was replaced by Davis Mills. Taylor is having an MRI on Monday.

The Texans (2-10) play the Seattle Seahawks this week.

“Team study and just what gives us the best chance to win moving forward with the team we’re playing and how we’ve been offensively and what we feel like after we’ve sat down today and tomorrow and see exactly what we need to do and where we need to go, we’ll make that decision,” Culley said Monday.

Culley said Sunday that the team will “evaluate everything” after getting shut out by the Colts 31-0.

Taylor was 5-of-13 passing for 45 yards and Mills went 6-of-14 for 49 yards against the Colts.

Dedrick Mills declares for NFL draft, but Nebraska nets transfer RB

Nebraska running back Dedrick Mills declared for the NFL draft on Tuesday, just hours after Southern California’s Markese Stepp announced he was transferring to the Cornhuskers.

Mills rushed for 396 yards and three touchdowns in six games in 2020. He also caught 13 passes for 84 yards.

Mills, who began his career at Georgia Tech, rushed for 1,912 yards and 25 touchdowns in three college seasons — one for the Yellow Jackets and two for Nebraska.

Mills also played one season at Garden City (Kan.) Community College after being dismissed from Georgia Tech in August of 2017.

Mills posted his declaration on Twitter, ending it with “I have decided to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.”

Stepp announced his transfer via a picture of himself in a Nebraska uniform saying “Committed.”

Stepp rushed for 505 yards and six touchdowns in three seasons with the Trojans. He had 165 yards and three scores on 45 carries and caught three passes for 28 yards in five 2020 games.

Stanford QB Mills one of trio sidelined due to COVID-19 issues

Stanford quarterback Davis Mills was one of three players unavailable for Saturday night’s road game against No. 12 Oregon due to COVID-19 reasons, the school announced.

Also unavailable for the Cardinal’s season-opening game were senior receiver/returner Connor Wedington and junior defensive end Trey LaBounty. Stanford said the trio were ruled out “due to COVID-19 testing results and contact tracing protocols.”

Mills, a senior, passed for 1,960 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games last season. Junior Jack West (37 career passing attempts) made his second career start in place of Mills.

Wedington also represents a big loss as he had 51 receptions for 506 yards and averaged 28.1 yards on kickoff returns last season.
