Reports: Auburn finalizing deal with John Cohen as new AD

Auburn is finalizing a five-year deal with Mississippi State’s John Cohen to become its new athletic director, ESPN reported Monday.

An official announcement is expected later Monday.

Cohen would replace Allen Greene, who left Auburn in August. The school’s chief operating officer, Marcy Girton, has been serving as AD on an interim basis.

Cohen is in his seventh year as AD at Mississippi State. Prior to that role, Cohen was the Bulldogs’ baseball coach in Starkville from 2009-16.

Greene and Auburn mutually parted ways with five months remaining on his five-year contract. Auburn hired Greene, then the athletic director at Buffalo, on Jan. 18, 2018. He was the first Black athletic director at Auburn.

Greene hired embattled football coach Bryan Harsin, who’s in his second season at Auburn and sports a 9-12 record. Harsin faced an offseason inquiry into why so many players transferred from the program and it’s widely expected that he will not be back for a third season.

Mississippi St. QB/WR Shrader enters transfer portal

Mississippi State’s Garrett Shrader, who went from starting quarterback to wide receiver in Starkville, announced Tuesday he’s entering the transfer portal.

Shrader has three years of eligibility remaining.

“This is not an easy decision, but I am a QB and it’s the skill set that got me here and fortunately I have been blessed to play in the SEC,” Schrader tweeted.

Schrader started four games at quarterback for the Bulldogs as a true freshman last season, throwing for 1,170 yards and eight touchdowns in 10 games overall. He also ran for 587 yards and six TDs.

But Shrader was shifted to wide receiver this under Mike Leach, who took over for the fired Joe Moorhead. Shrader played in all four games but notched one pass for eight yards.

Leach brought in Stanford transfer K.J. Costello as the starting QB. Costello is second in FBS with 10 interceptions and 10th in passing yards (1,267).

Moorhead is currently the offensive coordinator at Oregon.
