Report: 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell (knee) out at least a few weeks

San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell will miss some time with a right knee injury he sustained during the team’s Week 1 loss to the host Chicago Bears on Sunday.

NFL Network reported Monday that Mitchell was expected to be sidelined a few weeks or more, depending on the result of an MRI.

Mitchell left Sunday’s 19-10 loss after being tackled by Bears safety Eddie Jackson, whose shoulder collided with Mitchell’s right knee. He finished the game with six carries for 41 yards.

A sixth-round pick in 2021, Mitchell had a surprising rookie campaign in which he led San Francisco in rushing with 963 yards in 11 games (10 starts). He missed six games due to a concussion and injuries to his ribs and shoulder.

Mitchell also injured a hamstring during training camp this summer and sat out the preseason as a result.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) doubtful vs. Texans

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is doubtful for Sunday’s home game against the Houston Texans due to his injured passing thumb.

Garoppolo has a torn ligament and chipped bone in his right thumb. He missed all three practices this week and the 49ers didn’t allow him to attempt any throws.

“That’s why we didn’t have him go out there, because we were told each day that we can push it off one more, it gives him a better chance for it to stay,” San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after Friday’s practice. “So we’re trying to hold off throwing until (Saturday), possibly Sunday.”

Garoppolo was injured during a 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 23. He has started 14 of San Francisco’s 15 games this season and passed for 3,494 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Garoppolo sat out Week 5 with a calf injury when the 49ers lost 17-10 to the Arizona Cardinals.

Rookie Trey Lance is in line to make his second career start. Lance completed 15 of 29 passes for 192 yards and one interception against the Cardinals, and also rushed for 89 yards on 16 carries.

Lance has played in five games and has 354 yards, three touchdowns and one interceptions. The No. 3 overall pick has rushed for 137 yards and one score.

However, Shanahan wasn’t ready Friday to name Lance the starter against the Texans.

“Jimmy’s not out,” said Shanahan, “so I’m holding out hope.”

The 49ers (8-7) will likely have leading rusher Elijah Mitchell (759 yards) back on the field. His knee injury has progressed and he was a limited practice participant all week after missing the past three games.

Linebackers Dre Greenlaw (groin) and Azeez Al-Shaair (knee) and defensive tackle Maurice Hurst were all ruled out. Safety Talanoa Hufanga (knee) is doubtful.

49ers RB Elijah Mitchell (knee) ruled out vs. Titans

San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell will miss Thursday night’s game against the host Tennessee Titans due to a knee injury.

It will be the second straight game that Mitchell sits out. He missed Sunday’s 31-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons due to a concussion and a knee injury. He cleared concussion protocol earlier this week, and the 49ers were hoping the knee would respond.

Mitchell, a rookie, leads San Francisco with 759 rushing yards.

Jeff Wilson Jr. figures to receive most of the rushing work. Wilson rushed for a season-high 110 yards against Atlanta.

The 49ers also ruled out linebacker Dre Greenlaw (groin), safety Talanoa Hufanga (knee) and defensive lineman Maurice Hurst (calf). The club listed linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (elbow) as questionable.

Safety Jaquiski Tartt (ankle) was a full practice participant on Wednesday and cleared to play.

49ers RB Elijah Mitchell could play despite broken finger

49ers running back Elijah Mitchell had surgery to repair a fractured finger on Tuesday but head coach Kyle Shanahan said he could play in San Francisco’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week.

Mitchell had a career-high 27 carries for 91 yards Monday in the 49ers’ win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Shanahan said the medical view of Mitchell’s chance to play in Week 1 after a pin was inserted to promote healing the fracture as seemingly optimistic.

If Mitchell doesn’t practice this week, Jeff Wilson would take the majority of the snaps and be in line to start.

Mitchell, a sixth-round pick out of Louisiana, leads the 49ers with 560 rushing yards.

The status of JaMycal Hasty (ankle) is unclear for Week 11. The 49ers could also turn to backups Trenton Cannon and Trey Sermon.

JaMycal Hasty (ankle) out as 49ers search for RBs

San Francisco 49ers running back JaMycal Hasty will be sidelined multiple weeks after sustaining a high ankle sprain during Sunday’s 17-11 road win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hasty’s injury occurred in the fourth quarter. Further tests on Monday confirmed the diagnosis.

The loss of Hasty comes one week after starter Raheem Mostert was lost to a season-ending knee injury.

Hasty also wasn’t the only San Francisco running back hurt against the Eagles as rookies Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) and Trey Sermon (concussion) also were banged up.

Both of those running backs have a chance to play this Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Sermon would have to clear concussion protocol.

“JaMycal is the only one that’s for sure out,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday during a conference call. “Elijah and Trey have a chance, so we’ll see how this week goes.”

Mitchell rushed for 42 yards on 17 carries and had two receptions for 11 yards before exiting.

Hasty gained 38 yards on five rushes and made four catches for 21 yards. Sermon gained 8 yards on his lone carry.

Trenton Cannon, claimed on waivers last week, rushed once for a loss of a yard. He is the lone healthy running back currently on the 53-man roster.

Shanahan said the 49ers will work out veteran running back T.J. Yeldon. According to reports, the club also plans to have Lamar Miller and Duke Johnson in for workouts.

San Francisco also has Kerryon Johnson on the practice squad. Johnson rushed for 1,225 yards in 34 games (16 starts) with the Detroit Lions over the past three seasons.

Virginia Tech loses James Mitchell for season

Virginia Tech tight end James Mitchell is out for the season with a knee injury.

Mitchell was injured on a goal-line rushing attempt against Middle Tennessee last week. Head coach Justin Fuente said an MRI exam revealed damage to Mitchell’s right knee that calls for season-ending surgery.

On a handoff at the 2-yard line, Mitchell was stopped for no gain and didn’t return to the game. Fuente said Saturday he thought Mitchell would be fine. He has five career rushing touchdowns.

Mitchell considered leaving for the 2021 NFL Draft but opted to return after receiving a middle-round grade.

He had five catches for 42 yards with a touchdown this season and 52 career receptions for 838 yards and seven touchdowns for the Hokies. He also has run for five touchdowns.
