Texans RBs Joe Mixon doubtful, Dameon Pierce out vs. Vikings

Houston Texans star Joe Mixon is doubtful with an ankle injury and fellow running back Dameon Pierce has been ruled out with a hamstring injury for Sunday’s matchup at the Minnesota Vikings.

If Mixon is unable to suit up, veteran Cam Akers is expected to be the primary rusher with Dare Ogunbowale likely subbing in for passing downs.

Mixon, who hasn’t practiced all week, said earlier in the week that his injury happened on a now-banned hip-drop tackle in Sunday night’s win over the Chicago Bears. He finished with 25 yards rushing on nine carries and caught three passes for 25 yards.

The 28-year-old Mixon has 184 yards rushing through two games with a touchdown. The 2021 Pro Bowler also has six catches for 44 yards.

Pierce, 24, didn’t practice this week after missing Week 2. In Week 1 as Mixon’s backup, he had three rushes for 16 yards.

Starting center Juice Scruggs (groin), backup center Jarrett Patterson (calf) and third-string safety M.J. Stewart (knee) were all listed as questionable on Friday. Scruggs and Stewart were limited on Friday while Patterson did not practice.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon confers with his attorney s, Scott Croswell, center, and Meryln Shiverdecker, during day two of his aggravated menacing bench trial, Tuesday, August 15, 2023. Hamilton County Municipal Judge Gwen Bender is presiding over what prosecutors say was a road-rage incident involving a gun on Jan. 21, 2023 in downtown Cincinnati.

Bengals RB Joe Mixon not guilty in road rage case

A Cincinnati judge found Bengals running back Joe Mixon not guilty of aggravated menacing charges on Thursday.

Mixon, 27, had been accused of pointing a gun at a woman during a downtown road rage incident on Jan. 21.

“After a careful review of all of the evidence presented at trial, including the stipulations and the testimony presented today, I cannot say the city sustained its burden,” Hamilton County Municipal Court judge Gwen Bender said before rendering her verdict.

Mixon’s agent, Peter Schaffer, issued a statement on behalf of his client, who had entered a not-guilty plea in April.

“Knowing the facts, knowing Joe as a person and having tremendous faith in the legal system’s ability to get to the truth, we had no doubt of the eventual outcome,” Schaffer said. “This vindicates Joe as a person and that is what’s most important. Back to the business of football. Huge shout out to both Joe’s legal team and Mark Herron, the Bengals’ security director.”

According to police, the alleged incident happened shortly before Mixon was due to be at Paycor Stadium to leave with the team for a road playoff game against the Buffalo Bills.

The initial charge against Mixon was dismissed in early February before being refiled by Cincinnati police on April 7.

Heading into his seventh season with Cincinnati, Mixon has rushed for 5,378 yards and 40 touchdowns and added 231 catches for 1,763 yards and 10 scores. He has topped 1,000 rushing yards three times.

The Bengals selected Mixon in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. A potential first-round pick, he dropped in the draft after concerns about his character. While at Oklahoma in 2014, Mixon pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge for punching a woman in the face.

Mixon, who signed a four-year, $48 million extension in 2020, agreed to restructure his deal last month. He was due to make $10.1 million this season with a $12.8 million cap hit. The revised deal freed up cash and cap room for the Bengals.

Joe Mixon, Bengals ticked off by Bills-Chiefs ticket sales

Cincinnati running back Joe Mixon wonders why the NFL shuffled the deck when the Bengals “hold all the cards” as reigning AFC champions.

Mixon and Cincinnati (13-4) are on the road this week for the divisional playoff matchup with the Buffalo Bills (14-3). But the NFL began selling tickets this week for a potential AFC Championship Game in Atlanta between the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs.

“It’s disrespectful,” Mixon said. “Like I said, we’ve got a game to play on Sunday. You can’t count us out. We’re going to go out there on Sunday and do what we have to do to get that dub.”

The NFL released ticket access to Chiefs and Bills fans with season tickets in their home market this week.

Eyebrows lifted in Cincinnati, and not only in the RB room. The Bengals have discussed the sale of tickets to the title game in team meetings.

“I guess we are the underdogs to them,” said Mixon of the Bills. “But at the end of the day, they got to remember: We were the team, and we got the same folks back and we’re only better … we were the team last year to win the AFC Championship. And at the end of the day, we’ve got all the cards right now.

“Everybody in this locker room is going to matter. Physical, hungry, accountable teammates willing to do whatever they’ve got to do to get the job done. One away from being one away. We all know what’s at stake.”

The Bengals would travel to Kansas City for the AFC Championship Game if Cincinnati and the Chiefs win this weekend. If Jacksonville wins, the winner of the Bengals-Bills game would host the title game. Three of the Bengals’ four losses this season were on the road (Cowboys, Ravens, Browns).

This week, quarterback Joe Burrow said the Bengals are planning on their fans to meet them at the hotel and represent at Buffalo as they typically do.

“Any time you play on the road it’s hostile, big games. It’s going to be a little louder, affect your operation a little bit, but that’s why you practice,” Burrow said.

Burrow said the offense is looking at the reunion with the Bills as “just another game, another playoff game,” dismissing the notion there would be added emotion stemming from seeing safety Damar Hamlin rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

“For me personally now that Damar is better, he’s back with the team. For me personally, that’s in the past,” Burrow said.

Bengals approach full strength as RB Joe Mixon, WR Ja’Marr Chase hit field

Running back Joe Mixon participated in Wednesday’s practice with the Cincinnati Bengals after being idle last week due to a concussion.

The Bengals (7-4) host the Kansas City Chiefs (9-2) in a rematch of the AFC Championship game won by Cincinnati, 27-24 in overtime. The teams also met in a 34-31 shootout in Cincinnati won by the Bengals in Week 17 last season.

Mixon has 158 carries for 605 yards and six touchdowns this season with 41 receptions for 314 yards and two scores as a receiver.

Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase also continued to progress toward playing in Week 13, which would be his first game since the Bengals’ 35-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 23. After limping off the field, Chase returned to play in the second half, then was shut down until limited practice participation last week.

Mixon also missed the Week 12 win over the Tennessee Titans due to a concussion. Head coach Zac Taylor said Mixon remains in concussion protocol, but the final step was participation in the workout Wednesday.

Chase, 22, has 47 catches, 605 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns over seven games. He led the Bengals in all three categories before his injury, with Tee Higgins since passing him in receptions (57) and yards (826).

Chase made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2021, catching 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns in 17 starts.

In the Week 17 matchup with the Chiefs, Chase caught 11 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns.

Bengals RB Joe Mixon (concussion) won’t play Sunday

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon will miss Sunday’s game at Tennessee due to a concussion.

Coach Zac Taylor confirmed Friday that Mixon is out, but wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase (hip) has had a good week of practice and is questionable.

The Bengals (6-4) have won two straight and four of five entering the Week 12 game against the AFC South-leading Titans (7-3).

Mixon was injured during the second quarter of Sunday’s 37-30 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He finished with 20 yards on seven carries plus three receptions for 42 yards.

Samaje Perine took over in Mixon’s absence and finished with three receiving touchdowns. Perine, 27, has posted 341 yards from scrimmage and four scores in 10 games this season.

Mixon, 26, has rushed for 605 yards and six touchdowns in 10 starts. He has 41 receptions for 314 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Chase, 22, has missed the Bengals’ last three games. Quarterback Joe Burrow said earlier this week he expects his star receiver to play Sunday in Nashville.

Chase has 47 catches for 605 yards and a team-leading six touchdowns in seven starts this season. He initially hurt his hip in the Week 6 win at New Orleans and aggravated the injury in a Week 7 win against Atlanta.

Bengals RB Mixon (migraines) misses another practice

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon was not at practice again Thursday while dealing with migraine headaches, NFL Network reported.

The health issue hasn’t changed Mixon’s desire for a new contract, but his absence is not holdout related, per the report.

Player personnel director Duke Tobin said in the offseason that the Bengals are willing to address Mixon’s deal, but no progress has been reported.

Mixon, who is slated to make $1.2 million in base salary in 2020, is coming off back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons. He was a workhorse the second half of the 2019 campaign with 194 carries over the final nine games.

The 24-year-old has rushed for 2,931 yards and 17 touchdowns and added 108 receptions for 870 yards and four scores in 44 career games with the Bengals.

Mixon dropped in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma because of an incident caught on video in which he was shown punching a female student. He was still selected in the second round of the draft.
