South Florida, Old Dominion turn to backup QBs for Cure Bowl

The South Florida Bulls will make a push for their 10th win this season in Wednesday’s Cure Bowl in Orlando, Fla., but they will do it without the standout quarterback that led them through a season that had them ranked at one point.

Byrum Brown, the dual-threat quarterback who ran former coach Alex Golesh’s offense, will not play in the game against the Old Dominion Monarchs (9-3, 6-2 Sun Belt). Brown turns the 9-3 American Conference squad over to senior Gaston Moore for his final college game.

Brown, who passed for 3,158 yards and rushed for 1,008, could head to the NFL draft, follow his former coach to Auburn or return to the Bulls, but he will have a new role in the postseason — assistant coach.

“Byrum continues to attend every team activity/practice and has been incredible in supporting his teammates as he always is,” USF’s CEO of athletics Rob Higgins said on Wednesday. “So much so, that we’ve asked Byrum to serve as a coach in the Cure Bowl to help us get our 10th win.”

Another victory would mark the third time in school history the Tampa school has reached double figures in wins. It did so under coach Charlie Strong in 2017 (10-2) and the year before with coach Willie Taggart (11-2), with both seasons ending with Birmingham Bowl triumphs.

A graduate transfer who played for the Tennessee Volunteers, Moore appeared in seven games this season and went 14-for-20 for 54 yards and a touchdown.

With Golesh gone, current Bulls defensive line coach Kevin Patrick is serving as interim head coach. Tight ends coach Jack Taylor will handle the offensive play-calling.

“(Moore’s) been in the system six years, coming from Tennessee. He’s played some valuable reps there,” Patrick said. “You go watch out at practice, and you talk to our defensive staff and the defensive backfield, I mean, the guy’s got an arm on him.

“He’s confident, and the guys are confident around him.”

Keshaun Singleton has been the Bulls’ top receiver this season, producing 877 yards on 50 receptions with eight TDs — all team highs — in 12 games.

Similarities exist between the two programs.

The Monarchs will be without its driving force and top producer, quarterback Colton Joseph, and also are seeking a 10-win campaign.

The multi-faceted sophomore accounted for 34 touchdowns (21 passing, 13 rushing) and totaled 2,624 passing yards and 1,007 rushing on his way to Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year honors.

However, the Newport Beach, Calif., product will take his throwing and running talents elsewhere in 2026, most likely a major Power 4 program, after announcing those intentions last Tuesday via social media.

Sophomore Quinn Henicle, Joseph’s backup, will lead the team in Orlando after playing in three games last season and starting the 2024 finale at Arkansas State, a 40-32 victory in which he was 9-of-12 passing for 143 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed 19 times for 206 yards and two scores.

The coaching staff has faith that the native of Downingtown, Pa., can be a suitable replacement for Joseph. Henicle is 6-of-15 passing for 57 yards along with 20 carries for 201 yards this season.

“Colt leaving was not a shocker to us,” said Old Dominion offensive coordinator Kevin Decker. “But nothing really changes. All year long, they’ve been 1-2 in practice. Quinn knows every single game plan.”

Trequan Jones has rushed for 736 yards on 97 carries (7.6 per rush) and five scores. Tre’ Brown III totaled 751 yards on 37 receptions (20.3 per catch) and four TDs.

Old Dominion routs Virginia Tech to drop Hokies to 0-3

Colton Joseph threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as Old Dominion overwhelmed Virginia Tech 45-26 Saturday night in Blacksburg, Va.

Trequan Jones carried 13 times for 101 yards and a touchdown for the Monarchs (2-1) of the Sun Belt Conference, who upset the Hokies (0-3) for the third time in the last six meetings.

It felt like an unfortunate full-circle moment for Va. Tech head coach Brent Pry after his tenure began in 2022 with a 20-17 loss at Old Dominion.

As Pry fell to 16-24 at Virginia Tech, his team committed three turnovers and was penalized 12 times for 114 yards. The last time the Hokies started a season 0-3 was 1987.

The Monarchs’ domination was thorough. They won the yardage battle 527-433, averaging 8.5 yards per play and jumping out to a 28-0 halftime.

Joseph completed 16 of 22 passes without an interception, guiding an efficient Old Dominion offense which produced touchdowns on each of its six opportunities in the red zone.

The Monarchs’ defense made it a long night for Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones, who completed 26 of 39 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns, doing most of his damage after the outcome was decided.

Operating behind a patchwork offensive line, Drones was sacked four times and accounted for all of the Virginia Tech turnovers with an interception and two fumbles.

Old Dominion took the lead on its third possession, needing just five plays to march 93 yards. Joseph triggered the drive with a 38-yard completion to Ja’Cory Thomas and finished it with a 6-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0.

The next three times the Monarchs got the ball, they cashed in with touchdowns, including a 10-yard burst up the middle by Maurki James which capped a 97-yard drive and made it 14-0.

An 11-yard touchdown carry by Jones culminated an 88-yard drive after Old Dominion took possession on an interception by Jerome Carter.

Two 15-yard penalties against the Hokies fueled the Monarchs’ next march which was capped by a 13-yard pass from Joseph to Tre Brown in the final minute of the first half which swelled Old Dominion’s lead to 28-0.

Early in the second half, Old Dominion scored on its fifth straight possession as Riley Callaghan booted a career-long 50-yard field goal to make it 31-0.

Donavon Greene made two touchdown catches in the final 20 minutes for Virginia Tech, finishing with 77 yards on five catches.

Old Dominion stuns Virginia Tech with last-minute TD

Stifled all night by the Virginia Tech defense, Old Dominion quarterback Hayden Wolff directed a late touchdown drive as the Monarchs upset the Hokies 20-17 Friday night in Norfolk, Va.

Blake Watson scored on a 1-yard plunge with 33 seconds left as Old Dominion stunned Virginia Tech for the second time at home in the last four years. The Monarchs also ruined the head coaching debut of the Hokies’ Brent Pry, formerly the defensive coordinator at Penn State.

Mistakes haunted Virginia Tech (0-1) throughout as quarterback Grant Wells threw four interceptions. Old Dominion’s other touchdown came on the return of a recovered fumble. The Hokies committed 15 penalties that accounted for 121 yards.

Keshawn King rushed 19 times for 111 yards to lead Virginia Tech. King also scored on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Wells to give the Hokies a 17-10 lead in the third quarter.

Old Dominion answered with the game’s final 10 points. A costly pass-interference call on a fourth-down play set up a 20-yard field goal by Ethan Sanchez that cut the deficit to 17-13.

Virginia Tech had a chance to wrap it up late, driving into Old Dominion territory, but Ryan Henry picked off a Wells pass with 2:58 left, giving the Monarchs possession at their own 26.

From there, Wolff directed the game-winning drive. He finished 14 of 35 for 165 yards. Ali Jennings III caught five passes for 122 yards.

Jennings had a key 24-yard reception to trigger the winning drive. Then, his 38-yard reception to the 1-yard line set up the game-winning score.

Wells completed 21 of 36 passes for 197 yards and one TD. The transfer from Marshall also scored the game’s first touchdown on an 18-yard run.

The Monarchs’ lone touchdown in the first half came when a Hokies field-goal attempt went awry. A high snap from center sent the ball downfield, triggering a scramble. Robert Kennedy III eventually scooped the ball on the run and scored on a 25-yard return to give Old Dominion a 10-7 lead.

Tulsa storms past Old Dominion to win Myrtle Beach Bowl

Davis Brin passed for 285 yards and two touchdowns to help Tulsa post a solid 30-17 victory over Old Dominion on Monday afternoon in the Myrtle Beach Bowl at Conway, S.C.

Josh Johnson caught eight passes for 129 yards and a touchdown as the Golden Hurricane (7-6) won their fourth consecutive game. Shamari Brooks rushed for 107 yards and a score on 26 carries to move into second place in school history with 3,729 yards, passing Tarrion Adams (3,651 yards from 2005-08).

Ethan Hall also caught a touchdown pass and Zack Long booted three field goals for Tulsa, which outgained Old Dominion 529 to 247 while controlling the contest. The Golden Hurricane had a huge edge in plays (99 to 47) and first downs (35 to 10) while controlling the ball for 39 minutes, 43 seconds.

LaMareon James returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for the first of Old Dominion’s two touchdowns. Hayden Wolff completed 19 of 28 passes for 176 yards and one interception and Blake Watson rushed for 77 yards and a score for the Monarchs (6-7), who had a five-game winning streak halted.

James supplied electricity at the outset by navigating his way down the field for his second kickoff return of the season.

But the Golden Hurricane needed just 1:42 to answer and Brooks capped the seven-play, 74-yard drive by scoring from the 1.

Tulsa moved ahead 14-7 later in the quarter as Brin (22-of-34 passing) tossed a 23-yard scoring pass to Johnson with 4:47 to go.

Old Dominion’s Nick Rice kicked a 32-yard field goal with 12:50 left in the second quarter, but Long countered with a 35-yarder with nine seconds remaining to give the Golden Hurricane a 17-10 halftime lead.

Long added field goals of 25 and 32 yards in the third quarter to boost Tulsa’s advantage to 23-10.

The Monarchs threatened early in the fourth quarter as Wolff connected with Ali Jennings III for 30 yards. But Tulsa’s Tyon Davis punched the ball out of Jennings’ grasp inside the 5-yard line, and it rolled into the end zone and out the right side for a touchback.

The Golden Hurricane responded with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that increased their lead to 30-10. Brin capped it with a 4-yard toss to Hall with 9:04 left in the contest.

Watson scored on a 2-yard run to pull Old Dominion within 13 with 7:15 remaining.
