DE Montez Sweat, Bears agree to 4-year, $98M extension

The Chicago Bears and newly acquired defensive end Montez Sweat have agreed to a four-year, $98 million deal, which includes nearly $73 million in guaranteed money, NFL Network reported Saturday.

The Washington Commanders traded Sweat to the Bears at the trade deadline on Tuesday for a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft

The new deal, with an annual average value of $24.5 million, puts him among the elite earners at the position. Currently, only San Francisco’s Nick Bosa ($34 million) and Cleveland’s Myles Garrett ($25 million) earn more.

Sweat, 27, has recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games this season and is one of seven players with at least 5.0 sacks in each of the past five seasons.
He also has 32 tackles and two forced fumbles this season.

“What’s unique about him is that he’s one heck of a pass rusher, but he also – talking to the guys that have played against him in the building and just watching his tape – he’s a really good run player and plays with a great motor,” Bears coach Matt Eberflus said of Sweat. “He’s a great practice player, just talking to the guys that have been with him.

“He’s going to fit right into our culture in terms of working, and your best players got to be your hardest workers.”

Washington selected Sweat with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2019 draft. He is playing this season on an $11.5 million fifth-year option, and Chicago had the cap space to offer him a big extension.

Sweat has 197 tackles, 35.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles in 67 career games, all starts.

Report: Bears acquire DE Montez Sweat from Commanders

The Chicago Bears are acquiring Washington Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, according to multiple reports.

Sweat, 27, has recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games this season and is one of seven players with at least 5.0 sacks in each of the past five seasons.

By comparison, the Bears have a league-low 10 sacks in 2023.

Sweat has 35.5 sacks in his career and is in the final season of his contract. The Bears have enough salary-cap space to offer Sweat a long-term deal or use the franchise tag..

Part of the motive for the Commanders to make a trade is the cap crunch surrounding their haul of first-round picks invested in the position. Washington signed defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to a four-year, $72 million extension and his interior linemate Daron Payne to a four-year, $90 million contract. Even with Sweat gone, the Commanders still have a decision to make on former No. 2 overall pick Chase Young, who is in a contract year.

Sweat has collected 32 tackles and two forced fumbles this season.

He has 197 tackles and nine forced fumbles since being selected by Washington with the 26th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Washington Commanders will pick up the fifth-year option for defensive end Montez Sweat, The Athletic reported Wednesday.

Sweat, 25, will be guaranteed a salary of $11.5 million for the 2023 season.

The 2019 first-round pick (26th overall) has collected 21 sacks and 46 quarterback hits in 42 career starts.

Sweat posted 24 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles in 10 starts last season. He missed five games on injured reserve with a broken jaw.

WFT puts Montez Sweat on COVID list, Logan Thomas on IR

The Washington Football Team placed defensive end Montez Sweat on the reserve/COVID-19 list and tight end Logan Thomas on season-ending injured reserve on Wednesday.

Sweat was expected to return to practice on Wednesday after missing the last four games with a fractured jaw.

He is expected to be sidelined the next 10 days because he is unvaccinated, per multiple reports. That timeline would keep him out of Washington’s home game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and likely a road contest versus the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 19. He could conceivably play against the Eagles, but would be unable to practice during the week.

Sweat, 25, has recorded 19 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles in eight games this season.

In 40 games (all starts) with Washington, Sweat has 20 sacks, 114 tackles (23 for loss) and 45 quarterback hits.

Thomas sustained a knee injury following a hit from Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue on Sunday. The move to injured reserve is the second in 2021 for Thomas, thus ending his season.

Thomas returned from a six-game absence on Thanksgiving weekend. He caught a touchdown pass on the opening drive in Las Vegas on Sunday and finished with three catches for 48 yards in Washington’s 17-15 victory.

Thomas, 30, was hurt five minutes into the fourth quarter when Ngakoue lunged at him from Thomas’ left side and hit him at the knees.

Ricky Seals-Jones played in the No. 1 tight end role when Thomas exited on Sunday.

Thomas signed a three-year, $24.1 million contract in August.

Running back Jonathan Williams was signed off the practice squad Wednesday to fill Thomas’ spot on the roster.

Report: Washington DE Montez Sweat out with fractured jaw

Washington Football Team defensive end Montez Sweat suffered a fractured jaw in last week’s game and will miss at least a month, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

It’s a non displaced fracture and won’t require surgery but Sweat cannot have physical contact for at least one month, per the report. He also has to alter his diet.

It’s unclear when Sweat suffered the fracture against the Denver Broncos. He played 31 defensive snaps, his lowest of the season, in WFT’s loss to Denver.

Sweat has 19 tackles, four sacks, 12 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles in eight starts this season. The games missed will be his first since being taken No. 26 overall by Washington in the 2019 draft. He has 20 sacks in 40 career games, all starts.
