Lions selected to play in Munich in 2026

The Detroit Lions will play a regular season game in 2026 in Munich, Germany, the NFL announced on Tuesday.

The Lions’ opponent and date will be announced when the full schedule is revealed in the spring.

The Munich game is one of a record nine international contests taking place across four continents next season.

Allianz Arena, the 70,000-seat home of Bundesliga powerhouse FC Bayern Munich, is the site of the game. The stadium will also host a game in 2028, with the NFL playing games in Berlin in 2027 and 2029.

“Germany continues to be a key market in the NFL’s international growth ambitions, with Europe’s largest fanbase,” said NFL Germany general manager Alexander Steinforth. “We are excited to welcome the Detroit Lions to play in the 2026 NFL Munich game — and in partnership with the Lions, FC Bayern Munich and the City of Munich, we look forward to bringing an incredible NFL experience to fans across the region in the NFL 2026 season.”

The Lions have marketing rights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as part of the league’s global markets program.

“We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season,” said Lions president and CEO Rod Wood. “As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”

Playing in Germany holds special significance for Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown.

“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother’s home country of Germany since coming to the league,” the two-time All-Pro receiver said. “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country. Their support for me and the country’s instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale.”

The Lions’ two previous international games were played in London in 2014 and 2015.

NFL games returning to Munich in 2026, ’28

The NFL is returning to Munich with regular-season games scheduled for 2026 and 2028.

The league now has a multiyear partnership with the German city and FC Bayern Munich and the upcoming games are to be set in the soccer team’s stadium, which also hosted the NFL in 2022 and 2024.

Under the agreement, the NFL will help the city to grow and develop flag football in Germany.

The NFL labeled Germany “a key market for the NFL globally, with more than 20 million fans of the game, the largest fanbase in Europe.”

“Germany is of huge strategic importance for the NFL in Europe, and our return to Munich signals the league’s long-term commitment to playing games in the market,” said Alexander Steinforth, general manager of NFL DACH, which serves Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “As the first host of regular season games in Germany, Munich holds a very special place in the hearts of our fans and we look forward to continuing to create memorable experiences for them while building a year-round NFL presence across this city and country.”

The league already has scheduled regular-season games for Germany’s capital, Berlin, in 2027 and 2029.

The NFL is building its roster of international games for the upcoming seasons, and already has announced two games in London, one in Rio de Janeiro and one in Melbourne, Australia, for 2026. The Los Angeles Rams have been named the home team for the Australia game.

Germany has hosted five NFL games previously, dating back to the 2022 season.

Eddy Pineiro kicks Panthers past reeling Giants in Germany

Eddy Pineiro kicked a 36-yard field goal at 2:07 of overtime as the Carolina Panthers converted off a New York Giants turnover for a 20-17 victory on Sunday in Munich.

The Panthers (3-7) got the ball at the New York 23 for its only possession of overtime.

Bryce Young completed 15 of 25 passes for 126 yards with a touchdown and Chuba Hubbard churned out a career-high 153 yards on the ground on 28 carries.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones went 22-for-37 for 190 yards with two interceptions. He ran for a touchdown.

Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. gained 103 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown, but his fumble on the first snap of overtime set up Carolina’s winning points.

Graham Gano’s 42-yard field goal with five seconds to play forced overtime for the Giants (2-8), who’ve lost five straight games.

With the score at 17-14, the teams traded turnovers in the final eight minutes. The Panthers lost a fumble, only to have Jones throw an interception four plays later.

New York got the ball back at its own 21-yard line with 2:23 remaining and drove for the tying field goal.

The Giants opened the second half by going 65 yards in 10 plays while consuming more than six minutes off the clock. Tracy ran 32 yards for the touchdown.

Carolina responded by marching 80 yards in 10 plays with Hubbard scoring on a 1-yard run.

Then in the fourth quarter, the Giants covered 96 yards in 13 plays and used almost seven minutes in doing so. Jones capped the drive by running 2 yards for a score as New York closed within 17-14.

Aside from one drive, there wasn’t much offense in the first half. The Panthers scored first by going 90 yards in eight plays, with Young connecting with tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders for a 5-yard touchdown play.

Carolina added to its lead on the next possession, using 10 plays to go 56 yards to set up Pineiro’s 53-yard field goal.

Trailing 10-0, the Giants threatened in the second quarter, but Gano — a former Carolina kicker in his first game back after an injury — sailed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide right.

New York reached Carolina territory again before halftime, getting all the way to the 18-yard line before Xavier Woods intercepted Jones on the first play after the two-minute warning.

The Giants had 110 yards of total offense in the first half, with Jones going 6-for-14 for 54 yards.

Roger Goodell: NFL working on adding Berlin game

The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers will close the 2024 NFL International Series with a game in Munich on Sunday, and commissioner Roger Goodell said the NFL is working on adding a game in Berlin in 2025.

In fact, Goodell said Saturday the prospects are strong of playing a game in the German capital city next season.

“I usually say don’t believe rumors,” Goodell said Saturday at a fan event in Munich. “In this case, I say believe them.”

The league entered the German market in November 2022 with a game in Munich, and in 2023, Frankfurt Stadium hosted two games in that city.

Allianz Stadium in Munich is sold out for the Giants-Panthers clash, with about 70,000 seats to be filled.

The NFL International Series saw a game in Brazil and three in London this year, as well.

Plans call for eight games to be played outside the United States each year beginning in 2025, with more on tap when the NFL turns to an 18-game annual schedule.

Bears, Vikings, Jaguars, Panthers named for 2024 games in Europe

The Jacksonville Jaguars will play their 12th game in franchise history in their home away from home during the 2024 regular season.

The Jaguars are among the four teams designated by the NFL on Thursday to take part in the International Games.

The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings join the Jaguars as home teams in London next season, with the Carolina Panthers set to play in Munich, Germany.

Opponents and game dates will be announced this spring when the league schedule is finalized.

The Jaguars are set to play at Wembley Stadium, with the Vikings and Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Panthers game will be played at Allianz Arena, the home of FC Bayern Munich.

The NFL announced last month that 2024 also will see the first-ever game played in South America, with Brazil as the host country. The teams have yet to be revealed.

“Taking our game to more fans around the world is a major priority for the league and its 32 teams, and we are delighted to be returning to London and Munich in 2024,” said Peter O’Reilly, executive vice president, club business, league events and international at the NFL. “Whether tackle or flag football, international passion for the game and the NFL continues to grow, and having our teams and their world-class athletes play games and engage with fans around the world is an important part of becoming a truly global sport.”

NFL clubs agreed to increase the number of international games to as many as eight beginning with the 2025 season.

The NFL committed to scheduling games in Mexico City when renovation projects are finalized at Estadio Azteca.

Roger Goodell: ‘At least’ 3 more games coming to Germany

Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed Saturday that more NFL games are coming to Germany.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks will play the league’s first regular-season contest in the country on Sunday at Allianz Arena in Munich.

The NFL has committed to playing one more game in Germany in each of the next three seasons through 2025.

Goodell told a fan forum on Saturday that he “wouldn’t be surprised if it expanded beyond that at some point soon,” per the Associated Press.

Germany is the NFL’s top market in Europe. More than 800,000 fans entered a queue to try to get tickets for Sunday’s game, according to Brett Gosper, head of NFL Europe and U.K.

Munich and Frankfurt each will host two games under the current agreement.

Pete Carroll amped for Seahawks-Buccaneers battle in Munich

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was asked about this week’s trip to Munich, Germany, to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday as part of the NFL’s International Series.

“To me, it’s like a (college) bowl game,” said Carroll, who guided USC to several, including a Bowl Championship Series title, before returning to the pros over a decade ago. “Everything around it, there is somewhat of a celebration everywhere you go as you travel and at the airport. It just seems like there is an added level of attention to it that makes it fun.”

It will be the first NFL game played at Allianz Arena, the home of the FC Bayern Munich soccer team, and will feature a pair of division leaders.

The surprising Seahawks (6-3) have won four consecutive games to move atop the NFC West, while Tom Brady and the Buccaneers (4-5) are tied for first with Atlanta in the NFC South.

Carroll said his players are excited about the trip.

“They are really pumped up about it,” Carroll said. “We are going to try and put on a show, make them see our football, and experience it in a way they never have before. It’s an honor to do that, and we will respect the heck out of every aspect of this.”

This will be the Seahawks’ second European trip in four years — they defeated the then-Oakland Raiders 27-3 in London in 2018 — so they have a feel for what’s ahead.

“Really, we are going to get on the bus, get on the plane, we will sleep a little bit longer, and we will be in a different country,” Carroll said. “It’s really not that big of a deal.”

The Seahawks won 31-21 at Arizona last week as Geno Smith shook off a pick-six to throw for 275 yards and two touchdowns while rookie Kenneth Walker III rushed for 109 and two more scores.

The Buccaneers, meanwhile, had to rally to defeat the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams 16-13 at home to end a three-game skid. Brady completed 5 of 6 passes for 60 yards on the winning drive, the record 55th of his career, and hit rookie tight end Cade Otton with a 1-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds remaining.

“We have not played the way we’re capable. Just some things have kind of not really fallen our way at all,” said Brady, who became the first NFL quarterback to throw for more than 100,000 career yards, including regular season and playoffs. “Hopefully we can get a win (Sunday), get to 5-5 and then the whole season is ahead of us.”

Added Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles: “It’s a lot easier to fly overseas after you win a game than when you lose a game. We’ve just got to start putting (victories) together.”

Brady’s options might be diminished Sunday as several of his receivers were listed on the injury report this week. Wideouts Julio Jones (knee) and Russell Gage (hamstring) have missed practice, while Mike Evans (ribs/ankle) has been a limited participant. Guards Shaq Mason (ankle) and Luke Goedeke (foot) have also sat out, as has linebacker J.J. Russell (hamstring).

The Seahawks are relatively healthy, with nose tackle Al Woods and defensive end Poona Ford both missing practice because of illnesses and linebacker Cullen Gillaspia sidelined with a knee injury.

Report: Buccaneers to play 2022 home game in Munich

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be the home team this fall when the NFL plays its first-ever regular-season game in Germany, Sports Business Journal reported Friday.

An official announcement is due Monday, at which time the Bucs’ opponent will be announced, per the report.

The NFL announced earlier this month that Munich will host one of five international games this upcoming season. One will be played in Mexico and three in London.

The Buccaneers have home games set in 2022 with their division opponents — the Falcons, Panthers and Saints – as well as with the Ravens, Packers, Chiefs and Seahawks. The Bengals and Rams, who met in Super Bowl LVI, also are on Tampa Bay’s home schedule.

In December, the NFL granted four teams access to Germany for marketing, commercialization and fan engagement as part of the NFL International Home Marketing Areas initiative. The teams were the Buccaneers, Chiefs, Patriots and Panthers.

NFL expanding to Germany beginning in 2022

Munich will host the first-ever regular season NFL game to be played in Germany during the 2022 season, the first of four to played in the country through 2025.

The game will be one of five international games during the 2022 season, joining Mexico as well as the usual three in the UK.

Of the four games to be played in Germany, two will be in Munich and two in Frankfurt. FC Bayern Munich Stadium, home to the Bundesliga champions, will be the site of the game. Frankfurt Stadium will be the host site for that city’s two games.

“We are very pleased to welcome Munich and Frankfurt to the NFL family and are excited to reward our fans in Germany for their passion by bringing them the spectacle of regular-season NFL football,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

Two of the games in UK will be played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while the Jacksonville Jaguars will play a home game in Wembley Stadium.

The international game matchups will be announced in the coming weeks.
