Bucs rule out three defensive players vs. Steelers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Logan Ryan, defensive tackle Akiem Hicks and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the host Pittsburgh Steelers, coach Todd Bowles announced Friday.

Ryan and Hicks are dealing with foot injuries, while Murphy-Bunting is nursing a quad injury. All three players did not practice this week for the Buccaneers (3-2).

Safety Mike Edwards (elbow) will be a game-time decision, Bowles said. Edwards and Murphy-Bunting were injured in Tampa Bay’s 21-15 victory over the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday, while Ryan is in line to miss his second straight game.

Keanu Neal has stepped up in Ryan’s absence, while Murphy-Bunting received his first playing time this season after Carlton Davis exited Sunday’s game with a hip injury. Davis has been a full participant in practice this week.

Bowles said he feels confident in his team’s depth in the secondary.

“Well, it’s big for the young guys to step up,” Bowles said. “They’ve trained all year. We keep people on this team for a reason and at some point, everyone’s going to have to contribute when it’s their turn.”

Bucs’ Antonio Brown out, Rob Gronkowski questionable vs. Giants

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown has been ruled out for Monday night’s home game against the New York Giants.

Brown hasn’t played since sustaining an ankle injury in Tampa Bay’s 28-22 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 14.

While Brown has been ruled out, coach Bruce Arians said Saturday that the “arrow’s trending up” for tight end Rob Gronkowski as well as cornerback Sean-Murphy Bunting.

Gronkowski missed last week’s 29-19 loss to the Washington Football Team after sustaining a back injury in the Buccaneers’ 36-27 setback to the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 31. He’s officially listed as questionable.

Gronkowski, 32, has 16 catches for 184 yards with four touchdowns in four games this season for the Bucs (6-3).

Murphy-Bunting, 24, remains on injured reserve after sustaining a dislocated elbow in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Brown, 33, has 29 receptions for 418 yards and four touchdowns in five games this season.

Bucs CB Richard Sherman (calf) to miss games

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Richard Sherman is going to miss a few games after injuring his calf during pregame warmups Sunday against the Washington Football Team.

“I doubt seriously if he’ll be back anytime soon,” Bucs coach Bruce Arians said Monday.

Sherman, 33, was set to play in his first game in a month after missing the past three games with a hamstring injury. The five-time Pro Bowl selection was not on the injury report heading into Washington.

“He was fine Thursday and Friday,” Arians said. “I thought he was going to have a heck of a ballgame. He just stained his calf before the ballgame, so don’t know how long it’ll be.”

However, The Athletic reported that Sean Murphy-Bunting could come off injured reserve this week and be available to play against the New York Giants in Week 11. Murphy-Bunting dislocated his right elbow during Tampa Bay’s season-opening game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Sherman joined the Bucs midseason to bolster a secondary hit hard by injuries, including Murphy-Bunting. He started three games and was credited with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Bucs dropped to 6-3 following a 29-19 loss to Washington.

Buccaneers place CB Sean Murphy-Bunting (elbow) on IR

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on injured reserve on Monday.

Murphy-Bunting dislocated his right elbow during Thursday night’s season-opening game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Tampa Bay also placed long snapper Zach Triner (finger) on injured reserve, signed long snapper Carson Tinker and promoted safety Andrew Adams from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

The transaction involving Murphy-Bunting means the 24-year-old will miss at least three games.

Murphy-Bunting was injured on a play in which he was beat for a 22-yard touchdown by Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb with 1:35 left in the opening quarter of Tampa Bay’s 31-29 victory.

Murphy-Bunting’s arm twisted awkwardly after he took a swing at trying to knock the football away from Lamb just as teammate Antoine Winfield Jr. reached the scene. He fell to the ground in obvious pain and was eventually assisted off the field by a team trainer.

The 24-year-old Central Michigan product is in third season with the Buccaneers. He had three interceptions in the playoffs last season as Tampa Bay won the Super Bowl.

Triner tore a tendon in a finger during the game against Dallas and will require surgery. Published reports say he could miss 10 to 12 weeks.

Thursday’s game was Triner’s 33rd with Tampa Bay over the past two-plus seasons.

Tinker has 69 games of NFL experience with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013-18. The 31-year-old was recently released by the New York Giants.

Adams, 28, was elevated to the active roster for the opener and had three tackles. He has played in 44 games for the Buccaneers since the beginning of the 2018 season and has recorded five of his six career interceptions during that time. He also played in 30 games for the New York Giants in 2016-17.

Bucs CB Sean Murphy-Bunting exits with elbow injury

Tampa Bay cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting departed the Buccaneers’ season-opening game against the visiting Dallas Cowboys due to a right elbow injury sustained in the first quarter Thursday.

The Buccaneers announced that Murphy-Bunting wouldn’t return.

Murphy-Bunting was injured on a play in which he was beat for a 22-yard touchdown by Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb with 1:35 left in the quarter.

Murphy-Bunting’s arm twisted awkwardly after he took a swing at trying to knock the football away from Lamb just as teammate Antoine Winfield Jr. reached the scene. He fell to the ground in obvious pain and was eventually assisted off the field by a team trainer.
