Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Myles Murphy (99) wraps up Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders (12) in the first quarter of the NFL Week 18 game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium in Downtown Cincinnati on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026.

Bengals decline Myles Murphy’s fifth-year option

Bengals defensive end Myles Murphy remains in the plans for Cincinnati’s rebuilt defense, but the franchise passed on the fifth-year option in his contract for the 2027 season.

Murphy would have been guaranteed $14.5 million under terms of the option structure. The decision was made ahead of the Friday deadline for teams to exercise the standard fifth-year option for 2023 first-round picks.

Vice president of personnel Duke Tobin said after the draft that the Bengals see a future for Murphy despite adding defensive help at multiple positions via trade, free agency and the draft.

“By the end of the year, he was a problem for teams. He’s a guy that we believe in,” Tobin said of Murphy.

Murphy was the 28th overall pick in 2023 out of Clemson. He turned 24 in January and had 5.5 sacks last season but only 8.5 in 47 games in the NFL.

Cincinnati spent its top pick in 2025 and 2026 on defensive ends. Shemar Stewart was the 17th overall pick in 2025 and the Bengals took another Texas A&M edge rusher with the No. 41 pick last week.

The Bengals traded their first-round pick, the 10th overall selection, for Giants nose tackle Dexter Lawrence prior to the draft.

Former Duke QB Maalik Murphy transferring to Oregon State

Former Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy told ESPN that he is transferring to Oregon State.

Murphy reportedly visited Oregon State on Wednesday after stops at Kentucky and Auburn.

He will have two more seasons of eligibility with the Beavers.

“Lets get to work Beaver Nation!” Murphy posted on X.

Murphy entered the transfer portal on Dec. 10, one day before Tulane transfer Darian Mensah committed to the Blue Devils.

The 6-foot-5 Murphy is expected to be under center for Oregon State, which also has backups Gabarri Johnson and Kallen Gutridge returning next season.

Murphy spent the first three seasons of his collegiate career at Texas, however he was sandwiched between Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning. His decision to transfer to Duke paid immediate dividends this season, as he set the school record with 26 touchdowns while completing 254 of 421 passes for 2,933 yards.

Murphy started two games at Texas in 2023 when Ewers was injured.

Duke to host Tulane QB Darian Mensah

First-time starting quarterback Darian Mensah had nine wins for a team ranked in the Top 25 part of the season, but he’s in the transfer portal with a reported visit to Duke tops on his list.

ESPN reported Mensah would visit Duke on Tuesday.

Mensah, who tops the list of available transfer quarterbacks at ESPN and 247 Sports, potentially would replace record-setting Blue Devils quarterback Maalik Murphy. Murphy entered the transfer portal after leading Duke to a 9-3 record.

Mensah has three years of eligibility remaining. He completed 189 of 287 passes (65.9 percent) for 2,723 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, adding 132 rushing yards and a score.

As a redshirt freshman at Tulane in 2024, Mensah guided the Green Wave to the American Athletic Conference championship game. He was first in the conference in average yards per pass (9.5) and completion percentage.

Tulane (9-4) reached No. 18 in the College Football Playoff rankings before ending the season with consecutive losses. The Green Wave face Florida (7-5) in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl on Dec. 20.

Murphy started two games at Texas in 2023 when Quinn Ewers was injured while holding off then-freshman backup Arch Manning.

Murphy was 254-of-421 passing for 2,933 yards, 26 TDs and 12 interceptions with the Blue Devils.

Bengals open practice window for DE Myles Murphy

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Myles Murphy and defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson were cleared to return to practice Wednesday.

The Bengals opened the 21-day practice window for both players, who began the season on injured reserve.

Murphy landed on IR on Aug. 27 with a knee sprain. Jackson joined him two days later, also with a knee injury.

Murphy, 22, was the Bengals’ first-round pick in 2023 and Jackson, also 22, was their third-round selection in 2024.

Murphy appeared in all 17 games (no starts) in 2023 and contributed three sacks and 20 tackles.

Cincinnati (1-3) hosts the Baltimore Ravens (2-2) in an AFC North contest on Sunday.

Texas DT Byron Murphy II enters NFL draft

Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II plans to enter the 2024 NFL Draft.

Murphy revealed his plans to turn pro after three seasons with the Longhorns, thanking head coach Steve Sarkisian and the other coaches for bringing him to Austin to play on the big-game stage.

Texas could be well-represented in the upcoming draft.

Murphy was often in the shadow of All-Big 12 defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat, but rates as a first-round draft pick according to Field Level Media. In his first season as a full-time starter in 2023, Murphy was named Big 12 defensive lineman of the year.

His unique skill set could make him a fit in varied defensive fronts in the NFL, and he’s no slouch when it comes to athleticism as evidenced by his two offensive touchdowns — the second in the Sugar Bowl loss to Washington on New Year’s Day — this season.

Murphy had 5.0 sacks as a junior. He was credited with an “elite” pass-rushing grade by Pro Football Focus with 40 QB pressures during the 2023 season.

Packers to retire No. 12, honor Aaron Rodgers ‘at appropriate time’

Only a few months removed from trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, team president Mark Murphy isn’t ready to start making plans for a ceremony to honor the all-time great at Lambeau Field.

Murphy said at the team’s annual shareholders meeting at the iconic stadium any such acknowledgment of Rodgers’ greatness in Green Bay can wait.

“I want to thank Aaron Rodgers for all he did in his remarkable 18-year career,” Murphy said to a few tempered boos. “No, Aaron was a great player for us for 18 years. He will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. We will bring him back and retire his number at the appropriate time.”

Retirement talk and Rodgers are not new to the Packers’ shareholders, who discussed the reality of life without No. 12 each of the previous three annual reporting meetings. But Rodgers didn’t retire, or keep the team decision-makers in the loop on his plans after last season ended with a loss to the Detroit Lions.

At odds with general manager Brian Gutekunst since Jordan Love was drafted in the first round in 2020, Rodgers signed a new contract with the Packers before last season. But even with added input on front office and personnel matters, Rodgers and Gutekunst never fully patched up their relationship.

“The best time to draft a quarterback is when you don’t need one,” Murphy said of trusting Gutekunst because he put the franchise in position to compete for the long term.

Rodgers, 39, started the 2023 season in a new uniform and admitted “everything is different” not reporting to training camp at Lombardi Drive. The four-time NFL MVP is in line to start for the Jets after spending his entire career to date with the Packers.

Love steps into the No. 1 role with the Packers in his fourth season. Murphy said the expectation is to continue winning and applauded Love for his patience.

“He patiently waited his turn to make his mark,” Murphy said.
