Panel: NFL talked collusion in ’22, but not enough evidence it happened

A three-person appeals panel has ruled against the NFL Players Association, which contended an arbitrator incorrectly ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to prove collusion when negotiating quarterback contracts in 2022.

The ruling, handed down Friday, upheld the January 2025 decision by arbitrator Christopher Droney in a case that focused on whether teams participated in a collusion plot while in negotiations with NFL players, but specifically with Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson.

In its ruling, the panel acknowledged the NFL was “improper” in inviting teams to “participate in collusion.” However, the panel said it had not been proved by the evidence that some or all of the teams actually followed through with collusion.

The NFLPA has argued that the five-year $230 million, fully guaranteed contract given to Deshaun Watson in March 2022 by the Cleveland Browns was the impetus needed for owners to collude and that none of the three quarterbacks in question received similar guarantees.

Murray, now with the Minnesota Vikings, signed a five-year, $230.5 million extension with the Arizona Cardinals on July 21, 2022, with $159 million guaranteed.

Jackson, the MVP-winning quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, inked a five-year, $260 million extension on April 27, 2023. The contract includes $185 million in guarantees.

The Denver Broncos acquired Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks and signed him to a five-year, $242.5 million extension, with $161 million guaranteed, on Sept. 1, 2022. After two subpar seasons, the Broncos released him, and he subsequently signed one-year contracts with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.

All of those contract figures come from Spotrac, which also lists Wilson’s career earnings at about $316 million — fourth all-time in the NFL.

Amid allegations of sexual improprieties with more than 20 massage therapists who filed suit against him, Watson got his wish to be traded by the Houston Texans. On March 18, 2022, the Texans sent Watson and a future fifth-round draft pick to the Browns for a package of three first-round draft picks, a third-round selection and a fourth-rounder.

Watson is entering the final season of the contract and will become a free agent at the end the league year. The Browns have reworked the deal several times to give them salary cap wiggle room, but he still will wind up with the full amount.

Because of suspension and injuries, Watson, 30, has appeared in just 19 games over four seasons with the Browns and has a 9-10 record. With those seasons worth $184 million, he has earned nearly $9.7 million per game.

NFL Roundup: Cardinals officially release QB Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray is officially on the market.

The Arizona Cardinals released Murray on Wednesday, making him a free agent for the first time after seven seasons with the franchise.

Murray was reportedly a priority target of the Minnesota Vikings. He’s not the only veteran quarterback who was released on the first day of the league year.

Kirk Cousins was let go by the Falcons, ending his two-year stint in Atlanta at the halfway mark of a four-year, $180 million deal he signed in free agency after leaving Minnesota in March 2024.

By releasing Murray before March 15, the Cardinals kept their 2026 total cost at $36.8 million. A $19.5 million guarantee would have kicked in Saturday. The Cardinals designated Murray as a post-June 1 release, an accounting maneuver to spread the remainder of his deal over two years for cap purposes.

Murray, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, missed 12 games last season with a foot injury and has played the full regular-season schedule just once in the past five years.

The No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft and 2018 Heisman Trophy winner played for two coaches in Arizona, and a third, Mike LaFleur, was hired to replace Jonathan Gannon.

Indianapolis removed the transition tag from Daniel Jones when the quarterback opted for a two-year, $88 million contract.

Jones was in the midst of a career revival when he suffered a leg injury last season. While trying to play through the pain, Jones sustained a season-ending Achilles injury in December.

Jones threw for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a completion percentage of 68.0 in 13 games in 2025.

Murray has 121 TD passes and 60 interceptions in 87 career regular-season games. If he chooses the Twin Cities as his next home, Murray could be paired with running back Aaron Jones, who returned to Minnesota on a restructured one-year deal.

Cousins is reportedly one of the veterans the Cardinals might consider. He knows LaFleur from their time together in Washington, where Cousins began his career as a backup to Robert Griffin III.

In Atlanta, former Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa signed a one-year deal with the Falcons. With Cousins out of the picture and Michael Penix Jr. returning from ACL reconstruction, Tagovailoa offers new head coach Kevin Stefanski experience as a starting option if Penix isn’t ready for the start of the season.

The Jets moved to acquire Geno Smith from the Raiders before Las Vegas could release the 35-year-old. To make the financial agreement work for all parties, NFL Network reported Smith received a $1 million bump on his $18.5 million salary, of which Las Vegas will pay more than $13 million in 2006.

–Baltimore found a pass rusher one day after pulling the plug on the Maxx Crosby acquisition due to a failed physical.

The Ravens are adding Trey Hendrickson on a deal reportedly worth $112 million over four years. Hendrickson, 31, played seven games last season before core muscle surgery pushed him to injured reserve.

Hendrickson had only 4.0 sacks last season after leading the NFL with 35 total sacks in 2023-24.

–Safety Kevin Byard III reunited with Mike Vrabel in New England, signing a one-year, $9 million deal with the Patriots.

Byard led the NFL with seven interceptions last season with the Bears. He previously played for Vrabel with the Titans, who drafted him in the third round of the 2016 draft. Vrabel coached Tennessee from 2018 to 2023.

The Patriots also signed wide receiver Romeo Doubs (Packers) to a four-year deal and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (Jets) to a three-year contract.

–Outside linebacker Bradley Chubb signed a three-year, $43.5 million deal with the Bills, according to multiple reports.

He joins wide receiver DJ Moore, who was officially acquired in a trade with the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick, as a new addition in Buffalo. Those deals were made possible with the help of quarterback Josh Allen. Allen restructured his contract to free up more than $12 million in salary cap space, according to multiple reports.

Chubb was officially released by the Dolphins on Wednesday with a post-June 1 designation and quickly hooked on with the AFC East rival in Buffalo.

Chubb’s cap hit for 2026 was $31.2 million and the Dolphins have worked to get under the salary cap by Wednesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline by making multiple cuts.

Chubb led the Dolphins with 8.5 sacks in 2025. Joey Bosa is a free agent in Buffalo and not expected to return.

–Tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo signed with the Washington Commanders, who had a busy day addressing needs.

Okonkwo had career-best numbers with the Titans in 2025, hauling in 56 receptions for 560 yards. He has eight touchdowns in 68 games since being drafted by Tennessee in the fourth round of the 2022 draft.

–Other deals reported by teams as official transactions on Wednesday:

–CB Trent McDuffie traded to the Los Angeles Rams by the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2026 first-round (29th overall), a 2026 fifth-round pick, a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick.
–LBs Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean signed three-year contracts with the Raiders.
–Chiefs TE Travis Kelce re-signed; one-year deal worth a reported $12 million.
–S Minkah Fitzpatrick acquired by the Jets from the Miami Dolphins.
–RT Tytus Howard acquired by the Cleveland Browns from the Houston Texans for a 2026 fifth-round pick.
–Steelers DE Cameron Heyward re-signed; one-year deal worth a reported $18 million.
–C Elgton Jenkins signed a two-year deal worth a reported $24 million with the Cleveland Browns.

Kyler Murray thanks Arizona, embraces ‘whatever’s next’

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray thanked supporters in Arizona and apologized for not getting the Cardinals to the Super Bowl on Tuesday in an apparent farewell to the organization posted via social media.

Murray will reportedly be released on March 11, the first day of the NFL league year, if the Cardinals don’t receive a suitable trade offer.

“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” Murray wrote on X.

“I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best.

“I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it.

“Godspeed.”

By releasing Murray before March 15, the Cardinals would limit their financial commitment to the quarterback at $36.8 million. A $19.5 million guarantee would kick in on the 15th for the 2027 season.

Murray, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, missed 12 games last season with a foot injury and has played the full regular-season schedule just once in the past five years.

The No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft and 2018 Heisman Trophy winner might be in demand as a free agent. He has been tied to speculation surrounding the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Cardinals hired Mike LaFleur to replace Jonathan Gannon as head coach in February. The former Rams offensive coordinator and brother of Packers coach Matt LaFleur was part of the Arizona contingent that met with multiple quarterback prospects at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Cardinals pick third overall in the 2026 draft.

Murray has 121 TD passes and 60 interceptions in 87 career regular-season games and played for Gannon and Kliff Kingsbury during his seven seasons with the franchise.

Holdover quarterback Jacoby Brissett is an option to start for the Cardinals and was largely effective as Murray’s replacement for Arizona last season.

Report: Cardinals to release QB Kyler Murray barring trade offers

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray could be released this month unless Arizona receives trade interest, NFL Network reported.

Murray, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and former No. 1 overall pick, missed 12 games last season with a foot injury and has played the full regular-season schedule just once in the past five years.

Still, the top pick in the 2019 draft and 2018 Heisman Trophy winner would likely have many suitors in free agency. Teams with health concerns, questions or unproven starters reported to be in on Murray if he’s released include the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kyler Murray in limbo as Cardinals keep ‘all options on table’ at QB

Kyler Murray has not escaped offseason limbo with the Arizona Cardinals.

General manager Monti Ossenfort knows the hot topic around the franchise since hiring a new coach in Mike LaFleur is the state of the quarterback situation. Murray ended the season on injured reserve and Jacoby Brissett performed well. Both are under contract for 2026 along with Kedon Slovis.

“On top of your mind is our quarterback situation,” he said. “Here’s what I would say: All options are on the table for us. We’ve got Kyler, Jacoby, Kedon all under contract. … We’re going to look at every avenue to improve.”

Murray played only five games last season and could have a new home before his 29th birthday in August. Either way, he’s set to connect with a new head coach for the third time since being drafted first overall in 2019.

LaFleur wasn’t accustomed to attending the combine as an assistant coach with the division rival Rams, who leave the scouting exercises on the pre-draft circuit to area scouts and others under general manager Les Snead. When the Cardinals host prospects for interviews this week, LaFleur will be a part of the face-to-face conversations.

LaFleur has spoken with Murray, as has Ossenfort, and he said they are in agreement that improvement is the common ground for now.

“I’ve always had a good dialogue with Kyler. I would say it wasn’t up to what Kyler wanted, it wasn’t up to what any of us wanted as a season as a whole,” Ossenfort said. “When you have the kind of year that we had, there’s a lot of room for improvement. We’ve got to find a way to do that. Not only at that position, but all positions. That’s what we’re all focused on. Getting better and moving forward.”

A timeline of the decision for the Cardinals is not entirely clear because Murray’s salary — $22.8 million in 2026 — is below-average for starters, but the full cash outlay from Arizona complicates when they might need to make their call on his future. Next month, he’s owed a $17 million roster bonus and a workout bonus of $1,857,500.

In the meantime, the Cardinals are window-shopping for other QB options and at multiple positions.

Ossenfort said Packers free agent quarterback Malik Willis is one of the players the Cardinals are evaluating. He was part of the Titans’ front office that drafted Willis.

The Cardinals hold the No. 3 pick in the draft and are mindful of finding the quarterback — whomever it might be in 2026 — more support.

“I’m open for taking the best player at our pick,” Ossenfort said. “There’s a lot of quarterbacks in this draft. We’ll continue to evaluate them.”

Make a deal? Breaking down cost of trades for A.J. Brown, Maxx Crosby, Tua, Kyler Murray

Trade season is about to pick up in the NFL, with the window open on Tuesday for teams to apply the franchise tag and free agency set to begin next month.

Last March, the biggest deals consummated before checks were cut to free agents were trades sending DK Metcalf from the Seahawks to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle offloading quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, and left tackle Laremy Tunsil relocating from the Houston Texans to the Commanders and being joined by wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who came to Washington from the San Francisco 49ers.

While Seattle’s plan wasn’t fully clear at the time — the Seahawks signed free agent Sam Darnold and went on to win Super Bowl LX — there are plenty of teams with intentions to kick the tires on trades this month as part of a long-term vision unclear to most observers.

What will it cost to make those deals reality?

Here’s a look at veterans who could be on the trade block and what it might cost to execute a deal for the suitor and the seller.

Eagles WR A.J. Brown
Age at season’s start: 29
2026 cap hit: $23.4 million
2026 cap hit with new team if traded: $7 million

With four years and more than $110 million left on A.J. Brown’s contract, he’s not a fit for every WR-needy operation. It’s debatable if he can fit back in with the Philadelphia Eagles.

A love-hate relationship developed between quarterback Jalen Hurts and Brown somewhere along the line and “sorry” isn’t going to fix it. But to what ends will the Eagles go to get Brown out of their hair? They’d have to eat $43.5 million on the 2026 cap if he’s traded. But does GM Howie Roseman decide harmony is priceless and pull the plug on this one anyway? Brown appears destined to take the path of Jalen Ramsey, the 31-year-old universally lauded cornerback who has been traded three times (Jaguars to Rams, Rams to Dolphins, Dolphins to Steelers).

Raiders DE Maxx Crosby
Age at season’s start: 29
2026 cap hit: $35.88 million
2026 cap hit with new team if traded: $30.79 million

Only about $5 million in dead cap would hit the Raiders’ books in 2026 and if the front office — plus over-the-shoulder minority owner Tom Brady — find a trade they can get behind, Crosby might be on the move. If the New York Jets or Dallas Cowboys decide Crosby if worth multiple first-round picks or other valuable assets (an offensive tackle would be a good starting point for Raiders GM John Spytek), now would be a fine time to hit reset and clear $30 million from the ’26 cap. If any suitor balks at a Godfather trade demand, Las Vegas should sit tight until at least the October trade deadline when Crosby’s value will still be significant.

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray
Age at season’s start: 29
2026 cap hit: $52.7 million
2026 cap hit with new team if traded: $24.9 million

Comparison shoppers, avert your eyes. The Cardinals had Murray on the field for 30 total games the past three seasons and paid him $158.5 million in base salary and bonuses from 2023-25. It’s understandable why Arizona wants to move on, and the structure of his deal implies there could be interest despite the history of injuries and inconsistent performance.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa
Age at season’s start: 28
2026 cap hit: $56.3 million
2026 cap hit with new team if traded: $42.9 million

A dead cap hit of $45.2 million sounds devastating, but the Dolphins could survive it if they believe in seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers or draft another potential replacement in April at a fraction of the 2026 salary owed Tagovailoa. At his current cost, keeping Tagovailoa would mean Miami pays him more than the Rams pay Matthew Stafford ($48.3 million cap number), the 2025 NFL MVP and well above what these recognizable names will cost their clubs next season: Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Sam Darnold, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy, Trevor Lawrence.

The new decision-makers in Miami survived this process in Green Bay when Aaron Rodgers was traded and the Packers put their trust in untested Jordan Love.

The Dolphins aren’t likely going to cash in on a Tagovailoa trade by netting a massive return. Almost any compensation, in fact, is unlikely. The current scenario is more similar to the Broncos swallowing a cap hit of over $80 million and ending the marriage with Russell Wilson after one season paired with head coach Sean Payton. Denver would testify the move was the right one. The Broncos drafted Bo Nix and finished the 2025 regular season as the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Cardinals rule out Kyler Murray for season; future in doubt

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray’s season is over, igniting debate about whether he might ever play in Arizona again.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon did not commit to Murray when asked if he’d be the team’s quarterback in 2026.

“I’m worried about the Rams,” Gannon said Friday before Arizona’s final practice prior to the Week 14 game against Matthew Stafford and Los Angeles (9-3) in Glendale, Ariz.

Out since Oct. 5 with a foot injury, Murray is on injured reserve but the door was left open for his possible return next week. That speculation was muted Friday when Gannon confirmed Murray is done for the year.

“Kyler will not play again this year,” Gannon said Friday. “He had some more tests done this week, went out of state, got another opinion on it. It’s not progressing where it’s going to make sense that he can go.”

Gannon publicly remained committed to Murray having the quarterback job most of October and November when pressed by media about the situation.

Murray created a stir Thursday night when he posted a video to TikTok with the phrase “weird year” over a photo of a shirtless Murray walking off the football field. The caption below the image read “Never again.”

As for where the Cardinals stand on Murray’s future, Gannon said the franchise is focused on Murray’s health.

“I just feel bad for the quarterback. He got hurt,” Gannon said. “Wasn’t healthy enough to play. That’s first and foremost. That’s where I would leave it right now.”

Jacoby Brissett is starting in Murray’s place but isn’t viewed as a long-term option.

Whether Murray still fits that description is open to discussion. He’s 28 and has four 20-TD seasons. He played well enough for the Cardinals to compete before his Oct. 5 injury in a loss to the Tennessee Titans.

He had six touchdown passes and three interceptions in five games in 2025.

The first player in league history with 70 TD passes and 20 rushing touchdowns before the end of his third season, Murray was the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft and Offensive Rookie of the Year with Kliff Kingsbury calling the shots.

Injury history and team success are factors the Cardinals likely will consider before deciding when to write his next check.

He played in all 17 games in 2024 but a total of 13 in 2023 (eight) and 2025 (five).

Moving on from Murray comes at a steep cost. Releasing him outright comes with a cap charge over $55 million and all of his guaranteed $36.7 million salary in 2026.

Trading him activates guarantees in 2027 — starting with a base salary of $19.5 million — for the acquiring team, unless the two sides reach a restructured, extended contract with even more promises to the player.

Cardinals won’t open Kyler Murray’s (foot) practice window this week

Despite being on injured reserve for the minimum of four games, Kyler Murray’s practice window will not open this week, Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters Monday.

Out since Oct. 5 with a foot injury, Murray was eligible this week to begin a 21-day practice window to start the process to be elevated from injured reserve.

“He’s not quite there yet,” Gannon said of Murray.

Murray last played in a 22-21 Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans. He was not placed on IR until Nov. 5, exactly a month later, after attempting to practice through the injury.

With Murray out once again, Jacoby Brissett will be the Cardinals’ starting quarterback this week as Arizona (3-9) takes on the Los Angeles Rams (9-3).

Brissett, 32, is 1-6 as the Cardinals’ starter this season, throwing for 2,188 yards, 13 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Kedon Slovis will continue to serve as the backup.

Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett will start vs. Seahawks

The Arizona Cardinals will start Jacoby Brissett at quarterback for the fourth consecutive game when they visit the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon announced the decision Tuesday, one day after Brissett guided Arizona to a 27-17 road victory over the Dallas Cardinals. The 32-year-old passed for 261 yards and two touchdowns against Dallas.

Kyler Murray (foot) was injured during a loss to the Tennessee Titans on Oct. 5 and hasn’t played since. The Cardinals (3-5) have felt Murray was close to a return in recent weeks but there have also been reports suggesting Murray could be sidelined for up to eight weeks.

Gannon hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Murray going on injured reserve. He also said Tuesday that Brissett would be the starting quarterback against Seattle even if Murray was healthy.

“It’s a hypothetical to me, but yeah, I like where we are at with the offense moving forward,” Gannon said.

Brissett, 32, has passed for 860 yards and six touchdowns in his three starts. He also had been intercepted just once.

The Cardinals are averaging 25.7 points per game under Brissett with a low output of 23 games.

In Murray’s five starts, Arizona averaged 20.6 points and scored more than 21 points just once.

“I do like how we are operating as an offense,” Gannon said. “In my mind I take all the variables in my decision and make the decision when I need to. I think we’re doing a pretty good job on offense.”

The strength of Seattle’s defense also influenced the decision.

“This week’s going to be a new challenge,” Gannon said. “In my opinion, the tape that I’ve watched so far, this is the best defense that we have faced, so it’ll be a big time challenge, especially at their place.”

Immediately after Monday’s victory, Gannon asserted that Murray would be the starter when healthy.

Gannon told reporters Tuesday that he spoke to Murray about the situation.

“He’s doing well. He wants to be out there,” Gannon said of Murray. “He’s a competitor. I talked to him today, but he’s a good teammate and he’s working to get healthy.”

Murray, 28, has completed 68.3% of his passes for 962 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions in five starts this season. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has rushed for a team-high 173 yards and one score.

Cardinals coach: Kyler Murray still starting QB when healthy

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon shot down questions of a permanent quarterback change on Monday night, moments after Jacoby Brissett led the team to a 27-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Gannon was quick with an answer when asked if he would keep Brissett as the team’s starter in place of Kyler Murray when the latter returns to health.

“Nothing’s changed on that,” Gannon said. “That’s how I feel.”

Reporters began to ask follow-up questions before Gannon pulled the plug on the topic.

“I’ve got nothing to add on that, guys,” Gannon said. “Like I said, nothing’s changed.”

Brissett completed 21 of 31 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns to help the Cardinals (3-5) snap a five-game losing skid on Monday.

Arizona visits the NFC West co-leading Seattle Seahawks (6-2) on Sunday.

Brissett, 32, has thrown for 860 yards with six touchdowns with one interception in three games in place of Murray, who has missed the past three games since injuring the foot during a Week 5 home loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Murray, 28, has completed 68.3% of his passes for 962 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions in five starts this season. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has rushed for a team-high 173 yards and one score.
