Bucs WR Mike Evans, Giants rookie Malik Nabers get Pro Bowl nods

Wide receivers Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and rookie Malik Nabers of the New York Giants have been added to this week’s Pro Bowl Games, the NFL announced Monday.

Evans, who is going to his sixth career Pro Bowl, replaces the Dallas Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb, while Nabers — originally a second alternate — takes the place of the Detroit Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown. Both Lamb and St. Brown are out due to injury.

Nabers, 21, missed two early-season games with a concussion but went on to set a franchise record with 109 receptions, also the most by a rookie wide receiver in league history. The Los Angeles Rams’ Puka Nacua had set the mark last season with 105.

Nabers totaled 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns, and he was voted to the 2024 NFL All-Rookie team. The Giants selected Nabers sixth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft out of LSU.

He joins defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence II in representing the Giants at the Pro Bowl Games, which are Thursday through Sunday in Orlando.

Evans, 31, caught 74 passes for 1,004 yards and 11 TDs in 14 games this season, his 11th in the NFL. He tied Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice with his 11th consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season. Only Rice has more total 1,000-yard receiving seasons at 14.

Evans also went to the Pro Bowl in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. He joins defensive tackle Vita Vea and offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs as Bucs at this year’s competition.

Giants star WR Malik Nabers (toe) says he’s a game-time decision

New York Giants star rookie wideout Malik Nabers (toe) missed practice Thursday and termed himself a game-day decision.

He also is unsure if he will be able to participate on Friday. The Giants host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

“I’m hoping so, it all depends on how it feels tomorrow, that’s really it,” Nabers said Thursday.

Nabers, 21, has been one of the few bright spots for the Giants and leads the team with 97 receptions for 969 yards and four touchdown catches in 13 games (12 starts).

Selected sixth overall out of LSU, Nabers has caught 10 or more passes on three occasions but has just one touchdown catch over the past 10 games.

Though the Giants (2-13) are mired in a franchise-worst 10-game losing streak, Nabers isn’t down about the situation.

“We’re happy where we’re at,” Nabers said. “Continue to grow every day. A lot of things to fix, a lot of things we can look back on in our rookie year and continue to try to get better for next year.”

In addition to Nabers, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (ankle), center John Michael Schmitz (ankle), linebacker Micah McFadden (neck), cornerbacks Greg Stroman (shoulder/shin) and Dee Williams (toe) and safety Raheem Layne (knee) sat out practice Thursday. Quarterback Drew Lock (right shoulder) was a limited participant.

Giants WR Malik Nabers expected to face Eagles despite groin issue

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll expects wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Devin Singletary to play Sunday game against the Philadelphia Eagles despite being listed as limited participants in Friday’s practice.

Nabers, missed the past two games, cleared concussion protocol on Thursday but experienced groin tightness. Daboll said Nabers would practice Friday and doesn’t anticipate the discomfort keeping him out of Sunday’s game.

Singletary has also missed two games with a groin injury, but Daboll said “he is good to go.” Singletary began the season as the Giants’ lead back, rushing for 221 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 56 carries.

Rookie Tyrone Tracy is expected to maintain a regular presence in the backfield after rushing for 179 yards and a touchdown while adding seven catches for 58 yards in Singletary’s absence.

“Yeah, he’s earned it. He’s done a good job, so he’ll get plenty of playing time,” Dabolll said. “Motor (Singletary), we’ll see how the game’s going and how it transpires. But Motor will play, Tracy will play, (Eric) Gray will play. We’ll use all three of those guys.”

The Giants ruled out punter Jamie Gillan (hamstring) and defensive back Adoree’ Jackson (neck). Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (hip), linebacker Brian Burns (groin) and defensive back Dane Belton (illness) are listed as questionable.

Belton did not practice Friday, while the other two were limited participants.

Daboll was not ready to tip his hand with who will replace injured left tackle Andrew Thomas in the lineup.

Josh Ezeudu is expected to step in to protect quarterback Daniel Jones’ blind side, with Jermaine Eluemunor playing right tackle. But Daboll said a number of options are being considered as the front five changes after more than 400 snaps for the starting unit this season.

“Ezeudu has taken a considerable amount of reps on the left side. Jermaine’s on his right side, but you have to balance it too,” Daboll said Friday. “We’ll play him on the left at times, and (tackle) Evan (Neal) has played on the right side.”

Giants star WR Malik Nabers clears concussion protocol

New York Giants star rookie receiver Malik Nabers cleared concussion protocol after fully participating in Thursday’s practice, the team announced.

Nabers was evaluated by an independent neurologist after practice and deemed healthy.

However, Nabers experienced groin tightness during practice and that ailment was added to his listing on the injury report.

Nabers has missed the past two games after sustaining the concussion in the final minutes of a Thursday night loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 26.

Nabers was the No. 6 overall pick by the Giants out of LSU. He has 35 catches for 386 yards and three scores in four games. He has twice caught 10 or more passes and exceeded 100 yards in the same game.

Before Nabers was cleared, New York coach Brian Daboll was optimistic the 21-year-old was close to exiting the protocol.

“Malik has made progress,” Daboll said. “Good progress where he’s able to come out here today and practice. He’ll have a red jersey on, but he passed some of the steps that he needed to do. He’s better, which is a good thing. So, we’ll see.

“I’m optimistic, but I’m not going to push anything. That type of injury you want to be smart with. But he is doing much better.”

Nabers was a limited participant on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Brian Burns (groin), defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (hip), cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (neck) and punter Jamie Gillan (left hamstring) sat out Thursday’s practice.

Giants WR Malik Nabers edges closer to return as injuries hit NY

Waylaid by injuries entering Week 7, the New York Giants received a smattering of good news on the medical front with the qualified return of rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers.

Nabers participated in Wednesday’s practice after missing the past two games with a concussion. But head coach Brian Daboll cautioned Nabers is not entirely out of the woods or officially available for Sunday’s game.

He’s “much better,” Daboll said, and progressed through required concussion protocol but is limited to non-contact participation, notable to teammates by the red jersey he sported Wednesday.

The Giants drafted Nabers in the first round and he quickly delivered on the promise Daboll identified as a playmaker. Even after missing two full games and part of the Week 4 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Nabers is seventh in the NFL with 35 receptions and tied for 10th with three TD catches.

As one difference-maker returns, the Giants are subtracting star power elsewhere.

Left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) had surgery Tuesday and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, the active NFL co-leader in sacks with 7.0 since Aidan Hutchinson (leg) landed on IR, was unable to practice Wednesday with a hip injury. Defensive end Brian Burns has a groin injury and also not practicing to start the week.

Daboll said both players are day-to-day.

Giants rookie WR Malik Nabers in concussion protocol

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll wasn’t too forthcoming Friday when discussing the health of rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers.

“Yeah, with Malik he’s in concussion protocol. Any other updates, I don’t have for you,” Daboll said.

Nabers did his best to ease the nervousness of his fans after New York’s 20-15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. He wrote “All good” on Instagram before adding “Thanks for all the prayers!!!”

Nabers’ post came hours after he sustained a concussion late in the fourth quarter. He will have to go through the five phases of the protocol in order to play when the Giants (1-3) visit the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 6.

With New York facing a fourth-and-6 from its own 39-yard line and trailing 20-15 with 3 1/2 minutes to play in East Rutherford, N.J., quarterback Daniel Jones rolled left and found Nabers along the left sideline at the Dallas 35.

Trying to complete the reception and keep his feet in bounds while falling out of bounds, Nabers was unable to hold onto the ball. As he came down, his head hit the ground facemask-first. He remained on the ground for several minutes before heading to the blue medical tent. He was ruled out of the game with a concussion shortly afterward.

Nabers finished the game with 12 receptions and 115 yards. It was his second game with double-digit receptions after he caught 10 balls for 127 yards and a touchdown at Washington in Week 2.

The No. 6 overall pick out of LSU in this year’s draft, Nabers has 35 catches for 386 yards and three scores in four games so far. The 21-year-old entered Week 4 tied for the NFL lead in touchdown catches, one reception behind Kansas City’s Rashee Rice for the league lead, and fifth in receiving yards. With Thursday’s stats, he now leads or is tied for the lead in all three categories.

Report: Jayden Daniels will only throw at LSU’s pro day

More than 100 NFL coaches, general managers and other staff members are expected Wednesday at LSU’s pro day, but they will have a limited view of one of the day’s stars, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels.

NFL Network reported Daniels, a projected top five pick in next month’s NFL draft, will throw only and will not participate in any other drills. He did not throw at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month.

Team officials also have been lured to Baton Rouge to see All-American Malik Nabers and fellow wide receiver Brian Thomas, who led the nation with 17 touchdown receptions. Both are expected to be picked in the first round.

Daniels, 23, completed 72.2 percent of his passes for 3,812 yards with 40 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2023. He also rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 scores.
